Dear Meggie,

I can’t believe you got arrested. I also can’t believe I had to bail you out, of all the people in the world. I can’t help but feel the tiniest twinge of happiness in me. For once, I was more perfect than you were.

I still haven’t told you about the kiss. I know I should just get it over with, but I can’t. I feel wrong about it. And I know you’ll be mad once you know.

When I picked you up, you were in baggy sweatpants and a baggy T-shirt. I eyed you up and down, and stifled a laugh. “I didn’t have any clothes when they arrested me, okay? Could you just drive me home?”

I had borrowed your car. Why not, if I have to drag my ass over to pick you the hell up? I climbed into the driver’s seat, quickly shut the door, and locked all the doors. You glared at me from the outside. I was too busy laughing as you tried to pry open the door. You were still prying when I unlocked it, and you fell backwards as the door opened quickly.

“Alright, get in, hangover girl,” I said. You sat next to me and glared at the road ahead. “Aw, what’s wrong Meggie? You’re not seriously mad at me are you?”

“Just mad that you didn’t try and get me to bed or something!” you said. “You let me run around the house, half naked, like an idiot!”

“I was a bit busy,” I said in my defense.

“Yeah, busy sucking Garret’s face off!”

“Excuse me?” I asked. “He kinda forced himself upon, me, Meggie! I would have been violated if it had not been for-” I stopped myself. “Matt.”

“Matt? What’d Matt do?”

“He punched him. We’re friends, you know, it’s what friends do.”

“Oh. Right,” you said. “I don’t remember half of what I did last night. Like, I was chugging some vodka, and then I saw you kissing Garret, and then it went dark from then on.”

“Oh, let me tell you what you did, Meggie,” I said, and told you all of the events that included you from last night.

“Oh my God, I bet you Will saw all of that!” you said, facepalming yourself. “He probably thinks I’m an idiot.”

“He wasn’t exactly paying that much attention to you,” I said, remembering last night’s kiss and feeling a wave of guilt.

“Thank goodness,” you said, and made me drop by a drive-through and get you a coffee. “By the way, where’d you go last night? Someone told me your mom was the one who sent the cops. Obviously you didn’t go home.”

“I checked into a motel.”

“Where’d you get money for that?”

“It’s called stealing, genius,” I told you, and drove you home really quick for you to change your clothes, and then we went off to school.

Half of the student body didn’t show.

Sarah was apparently still locked up, along with Garret and several others. Matt drove Kelly home, after he had, “found her knocked out at the bottom of the stairs on Skeeter’s lawn.” And Kelly pretty much grabbed your coffee and downed what was left. You shot her a glare.

I still don’t know how the hell Matt got Kelly home, for he was still getting his blowjob from her when the cops showed.

Will began to walk over. My eyes got wide and I almost shook my head at him. “What the hell, Harriett, what is it?” you asked me, and then you saw Will.

You smoothed back your hair and flashed him a smile. “Hey, Will, what’re you doing over here?” you asked him.

“Just making sure everyone was alright, I guess,” he says, and for a split second, his eyes dart to me. “You know, Meggie, you got pretty pounded last night.”

“I thought you told me he wasn’t paying attention to me!” you hissed at me. I shrugged. He laughed.

“Hey, um, Harriett, could I talk to you about something?” he asked. “It’s about, um, Mr. Gerret’s class.”

It most definitely was not about Mr. Gerret’s class.

“Sure,” I said, and I could feel your eyes practically burning my flesh.

“Did you tell her?” he asked me when we had gotten out of earshot.

“Will, I can’t just tell her,” I said. “It would crush her.”

“Harriett-”

“Will!” I snapped. “Did you see how happy she looked talking to you? I can’t just break her like that.”

He sighed at me. “You really are her best friend, huh?” he said.

“Of course.”

“Fine. But I can’t just ignore last night, Harriett. I know you felt something, too.” He looked at me.

“I’m sorry, but right now, my feelings don’t matter. Just wait a while, can’t you?” I pleaded. He sighed, and then said, “Okay.”

Meggie, I’m sorry, but it’s not the right time for you to know about the kiss yet. It would break you. I swear.

Love, Harriett
