Nina
~"Come on aunty Rachel...you don't need a bag," Kaylee whined tugging at Rachel's shirt. Rachel shrugged Kaylee off her arm zipping the bag closed.
Sara laughed as Rachel tried arguing with her niece. "Kaylee. Don't make me toss you..." Rachel warned.
Sara snorted. "Babe...you can't threaten a kid."
"I'm not a kid. One day I could be your Al--"
"Enough Kaylee," I finally intervened. My daughter could run her mouth. I wasn't her birth mother but she was my own. Mckayla was never this mulish and coarse, throwing her future Alpha status at others. Quite modest and open to learning. That was some of the qualities I loved about Mckayla. "No matter who you'll be in the future...right now, you are a child who has to follow and listen."
"But mom said--"
I held my hand up. "Follow." Kaylee pressed her lips together slumping on the couch defeated.
"Was Mckayla like that as a kid?" Rachel asked chuckling at Kaylee's visible pouting.
"Surprisingly...no," Sara responded and then snatched the bag Rachel was packing out of her reach. "But she was right...you won't be needing this."
I thought of how Mckayla was as a kid. She was always too humbling and willing to share authority. The only time she took on full power and leadership was when it was a dire situation or to teach Malcolm a lesson. At the end, there could be only one who led. It was always going to be Mckayla.
No, that type of arrogance and its-all-about-me attitude came from General, though I would never voice that aloud. Besides, I would never want Kaylee to hate the part of her that was like General. She was her own person and nothing like General.
Mckayla walked into the living room still talking with Malcolm; who was nicely healed and Bran following behind. She was leaving the pack in their care.
I couldn't help but watch and admire the leadership Mckayla was taking ownership to, rather she realized that or not.
Cormic walked into the living room with the woman who gladly kept him company; his arm hanging over her shoulder like they were a couple taking a stroll down a sidewalk.
He parted from her, placing a kiss on her cheek and walked up to me. Cormic followed my gaze towards Mckayla and grinned. "She is a sight...isn't she?"
I ignored him.
Cormic brought on a fake pout and when I ignored him further he snorted. "Now I know you're not as uptight as she is."
He was right about that but I loved Mckayla's uptight ass. I only acknowledged him with a dry look for a few seconds.
"She's softened...a little," Cormic said, giving his opinion.
Mckayla eyes shifted for only a few seconds to Cormic snarling dangerously low before focusing back on Malcolm and Bran. I knew she was secretly listening.
"I guess not," Cormic chuckled.
I wanted to ask him questions about Mckayla. How she was when he first met her? Did Mckayla and Rogue relationship be something more than a quick romance? Did Mckayla ever mention her past? But then I felt guilty for considering asking him anything. I was invading Mckayla's past without her permission. If I wanted to know anything I should go straight to her. Besides, Mckayla was definitely tuning into our short lived conversations.
I looked up realizing Cormic had been studying my gaze for quite some time. It was as if he knew what I was thinking but he knew not to speak of it. "Y'all have fun. I'll just rest my sexy self right here." Without another word he walked off.
