The match kicked off with Lyon dominating possession. Paola, the Parisian goalkeeper, was a brick wall, making save after save to keep the score level at 0-0 by halftime. In the locker room, the coach rallied the team, urging them to play with more aggression and speed. Then, he pulled Madison aside.
"Madison," he said, "you're doing well in midfield, but we need to score. And you need to shine if you want to get noticed. I'm putting you up top as striker. Use your speed and skill to make something happen."
Madison nodded, her eyes gleaming with determination. "You can count on me, Coach."
The second half began, and with Madison in the striker position, PSG's attack transformed. The game intensified, but the clock ticked down with the score still 0-0.
In the 90th minute, the referee signaled for two minutes of extra time. Marie, the Parisian midfielder, seized the ball and threaded a pass to a teammate who charged towards the goal. A cross into the box found Madison, and in that moment, nothing else mattered. She fired a shot.
"GOALLLLL!" The commentator's voice boomed through the stadium. "What a magnificent goal from number 9, Madison St. Germain, securing victory for PSG! This young team has just won the French U20 Championship!"
The co-commentator chimed in, "It's magical! They've defeated the reigning champions! What a win, and what a goal from Madison. This girl has immense potential."
The stadium erupted in cheers as PSG celebrated their victory.
After the trophy ceremony, Madison was greeted by a jubilant Lydia. "Madi, you were incredible!" she exclaimed. "That goal was amazing!"
"I know, right?" Madison grinned. "Even I can't believe it went in!"
The celebration was cut short when two men approached them.
"Are you Madison St. Germain?" one of the men asked.
"Yes, that's me. Why?"
"I'm Rory Dames, head coach of the Chicago Red Stars," the man said, gesturing to his companion. "We're here scouting talent, and I was very impressed with your performance today. I'd like to offer you a contract. Since you're not yet eighteen, we'll need to discuss this with you and your parents."
Madison's sarcastic side emerged. "Well, unless you're secretly Melinda Gordon, talking to my parents will be a bit difficult."
Lydia intervened, "Madison! Be polite. Sorry, sir, she can be... a bit blunt."
Rory looked at Lydia curiously. "And you are?"
"I'm Lydia, Madison's social worker. She's been with us since she was five. Her parents... they passed away in a car accident."
"Okay, enough about my life story," Madison interrupted. "Can we get to the contract part?"
Rory cleared his throat. "Madison, I'm offering you a two-year contract with the Red Stars. We'll see how you perform in different positions, but this is a great opportunity for you to develop your skills."
"That's amazing!" Madison beamed. "I'll take it! Playing in the US has always been my dream."
Rory's assistant spoke up, "There's just one catch. You're under eighteen, so you'll need someone to accompany you to the States."
"No problem," Madison said confidently. "I'm sure Lydia would love to come with me."
She turned to Lydia, pleading in her eyes. "Please, Lydia? Will you come?"
Lydia looked at Madison, her expression a mixture of sadness and love. "I'm sorry, kiddo. I can't."
