Chapter 3 Jayce

I wake up I have to wear my uncle's clothes now the shirt is still too long and the shorts are to loose around my waist so I tie a rope around them I have to wake up early enough before the sun rises so my shipmates and I can catch enough fish and by shipmates I mean Dominick and I. I walk to the kitchen and every time I look at my Uncle's chair a sickening feeling goes through my stomach. I walk to Dominick's house his mom answers the door and I see Dominick slide across the floor he has a smile on his face he gives his mom a quick kiss on the cheek "Buenos días mamá te veo luego te amo adiós" He said running out the door he grabs a light weight jacket as well just in case it gets cold by the water. We run to the dock and I catch a glance at Ana who was gardening for an old woman to get money. She had her hair tied up in a bun with a blue bandanna around her head she had on a pair of shorts and a short sleeve shirt that just goes up to the top of her belly button. I wave at her and she waves back I just hope she can't see the pink in my cheeks. Dominick looks at me and lets out a small laugh " In your dreams Jayce." He said we reached the boat and we jump in.
" We're just friends that's all I feel for her," I said trying to keep a straight face. Ana is both Dominick and I's friend. I'm pretty sure without her we would both be in school, trying to pass by with a D. I was thinking about her waving at me. Did it mean something or was it just a wave. " And don't act like you don't have a thing for my cousin," I said untying a net and throwing it in the water Dominick's ears went pink and so did his cheeks.
" I do not," He said not looking me in the eye he occupied himself with untying another net and throwing it in the water.
" Oh please always looking at her when she walks by, trying to make her laugh, hugging her, my friend you've got a crush fever," I said laying back in the boat looking at the sunrise on the ocean.
" How's your uncle," Dominick said changing the subject, because he knows I'm right. My smile went down when Dominick mentions my uncle and Dominick looks concerned.
" He's fine I just miss him why did they have to bring the war to us why not keep it in their circle". I said sitting up I was getting angry, but mostly because I was scared and I didn't want to show my fear. Dominick knew better than me to not talk about super blood or the capitol.
" The war can really wipe you out even if your not fighting two cities were bombed yesterday" He said taking the boat back to shore so we can get something to eat. I listen to the hum of the motor and I hope my Uncle never gets hurt he's been gone for five years now and I've been left in charge of the house and getting money by fishing I look up at the clouds there is no wind in the sky so clouds stay in one spot unmoved, the sky is a beautiful blue and the sun is hot beating down on the both of us, we have to be careful to not touch the rim of the boat due to the hot iron that was rusting around the whole boat the only part that wasn't rusted was the bottom which was good I guess. Sylvie has to work as a maid the same as Ana to get a little extra money, since Ana's grandma can no longer work. Sylvie needs the job because fisher don't get paid nearly as much as they should. Zinnia and Chloe have one more year of school and my Aunt stays at home most of the time praying that my uncle makes it home safely. We land back on the dock and we walked back to our homes I stop to see Ana first she's still outside pulling green plants out of the ground. I jump up by her and scare her.
She screamed and said " Jayce I thought you were a thief" She hit me in the chest with a small shovel leaving a dirt mark on my grey shirt. I laugh at her and sit down next to her in the dirt " if you're just going to sit there take a shovel and help" she said throwing a shovel her green eyes look at me with a look of frustration. She was happy she loves gardening
"You know you love me ," I said and she laughs. "Otherwise we wouldn't be friends". I say and she hugs me and I realize that she isn't smiling anymore she is crying.
" Your my best friend Jayce," she said pulling away from my arms and wiping her face from the tears. " My parents are super blood owners," she said looking at me tears come back into her eyes and she falls in my arms again I held her tiny body in my arms until Dominick comes to get me. Ana comes with us walking slowly we walk with her, Dominick smiles at her and I feel like Dominick knows what she told me, he's smarter than he gives himself credit for.
"So Ana have you ever been on a boat before" Dominick asks smiling and I know that he is going to tell a joke.
Ana knows that to. "No Dominick I've never rode a boat" We all get in the boat and Ana looks scared when the boat rocks.
Dominick smiles "Well this rust bucket only has a few holes in the bottom" Dominick laughs at his joke, but Ana wasn't laughing. She was looking at the bottom of the boat. "Hey Ana it was joke" she heard him but she didn't care and for some reason she was scared of touching the water.
"Ana look" I say she looks up when we get out the door and Ana looks in aw at the sea beyond the bubble we live in. When we get to the net we pull them out but there were no fish. When both nets were pulled out of the ocean, without warning Ana jumps in the water when she comes back up from the surface she puts her hands on her head and pulls her hair back and out of the ponytail. Her black hair looks like wet black paint, the water takes away the curls in her hair, leaving her hair straight.
" Come on where's your sense of adventure," she said swimming to the edge of the boat. Taking off my shirt I jump in next the water was cool and it felt good against my body. Dominick jumps in after me I notice when he jumped he went far out to sea but only far enough to not be able to reach him he swims back. Security drives a boat over to us so I quickly flip the boat over and we hide underneath it. I watch the oil disappear from the water as the boat goes away. We swing back and I flip the boat over back to the right way Dominick and I look for our shirts in the water and Ana climbs back in the boat tying her hair back in a ponytail Dominick gets back in the boat next, but I still can't find my shirt so I stay in the water looking for it. " it in here genoise" Ana said she dunked the shirt in water to make it look more like our boat capsized and everyone in the boat fell in the water. Rather than us swimming illegally, I put my shirt back on and climb back into the boat.
" Well, that was fun while it lasted". Dominick said laying back in the boat putting his baseball hat over his eyes and fell asleep I throw a net back in the water and Ana helps once Ana was sure Dominick fell asleep she started talking to me again
" Remember meet me at the dock the minute the last security goes to bed" She said her voice was quiet but not a whisper I nod my head and smile at her after a little while of waiting I pull the net back in the boat and there are fish only a few fish but enough to get one ticket for one vegetable. A fish hit Dominick and it wakes him I take the other networks out there more fish in the last there was eight. Dominick looks down at the floor in shock at the amount of fish on the floor there were more fish then we've seen in a while, even if it was only ten. Dominick and I start hitting the fish with a hammer to kill them Ana turns away looking with pity in her eyes. When the last fish was killed we headed back into the mainland when we got there, I walked to the fishers stand were an old man stands with a cane and an eye patch his grey hair in a ponytail and he has a scruff of a beard.
" Did you catch anything today Jayce my boy?" He said looking at the bag filled with fish his voice was shaky from age and he was shorter than even Ana his neck was wrinkled and his eye drooped.
" Yup, I caught some tuna that's supposed to be eight tickets right," I said taking my hand out of my pocket to collect the tickets I put them in my pocket
" Jayce I'm going to go okay," Ana said kissing me on the cheek and walking away I wave goodbye to her and I watch her walk away Wilson gestures for me to come behind the stand. I go into the stand smell like fish and there two chairs one for Wilson and one for me.
" Do I see a smile on your face Jayc, my boy?" He said handing a woman a fish and the women gave him a food ticket which he gave to me.
" Sir this belongs to you," I said, handing the ticket back to him but he doesn't expect it. " Sir I really don't need this," I said standing up I had to bend down a little in the stand or I'd get my head caught in a net. Wilson just waved his hand at me and sat back down his body shaking as his weak knees helped him sit I grab his arm to help him.
" Son I'm an old man who has bad knees and one eye you need this food more than I do for your family." He said putting his hands on mine and looking at me with a smile. I put one of my tickets in his pocket when he sits down someone else comes up I hand them a fish and the hand me not a ticket but a piece of paper. It read the rebellion needs you to come down to the dock at nine. I cringle the piece of paper up but I will listen to it. " Jayce who was that girl that you waved at," Wilson said spinning his pain in the ground.
" Just a friend sir," I said smiling and looking at her house I can imagine her grandma yelling at her now and Ana coming up with some lie about why her hair wet.
" Oh my boy I've been around for years I know when a fifteen-year-old boy looks at a young woman's house that they've known for a lot of their life that boy grows to like that young woman" he said and I knew he was right, I do have a crush on Ana and she is my best friend I also do visit her at her house a lot more.
" Her name's Ana," I said sitting down next to Wilson he smiles at me and gives me a knife. The handle was I Ivory and the blade was clean silver. " Sir I can't take valuesevvalueo you," I said shaking my head and giving it back to him but he pushes the knife back in my direction
" Jayce I'm dying and I have no one to give anything to," He said when he said that it felt like someone had punched me in the gut and my smile becomes s frown. " Oh Jayce doesn't be sad it not like I die yet," he said looking into my eyes, they were watering. " This was my father's he gave this to me when I was your age." I close my hand around the knife and look at it. I stand up to leave before curfew to get food for my family but Wilson grabs my wrist and I stop " Jayce you know no powers can bring the dying back to health. If the dying wants to go let them go." he said and he let go of my wrist taking his advice I go outside the stand and walk to the vegetable stand. I grab some ground vegetables and walk home.
" Jayce did you get the vegetables," Sylvie said I dropped a bag full of vegetables and I sit down in a chair looking at the note that I crumbled earlier and I thought of what Wilson said what if I could bring people back from the dead, what if my powers can bring people back.
" Jayce your home" Zinnia said running up to me. " I'm out of school for good, I don't have to go back." She said I gave her a hug and she sat down next to me. " Do you want to go play by the dock?" Zinnia said her eyes were happy and she had a huge smile on her face which wasn't new but it still made me happy that even if the world was bad she was still happy.
" Maybe later little flower," I said scratching her on the top of her head and turning to mom. " The lake was calm today," I told her and she nodded her head someone one walked up to our door I think the worst and so does mom. Sylvie walks up to the door when mom falls into a corner in fear. I almost hope they're just here to take me not to tell us that our dad was killed. The man knocks on the door and it sounds almost like my heartbeat. My sister answers the door and the man gives her the letter. I can see my sister's hand shaking she may have acted like she was twenty, but she was still scared I can see Sylvie joining the army.
" Thank you, sir," she said taking the letter she set it down on the table and we all just stare looking thinking the worst. I finally take the letter and open it I unfold it slowly and start to read as I read I feel a large weight lifted off my shoulders.
I read the letter out loud " The Macline we are writing to you to inform you that your husband and father will be discharged on July seventh at o' seven hundred he has served our country well." My mom lets out a cry of joy and my sisters get closer to read the letter. Mom gives me a hug and a kiss on the top of the head then she goes around giving everyone else a hug and kiss.
" Dad's coming home," Chloe said her voice was happy which is a new thing lately given that she just got her powers and she feels misunderstood. She's only ten and she feels like she's a freak.
" That's next Thursday," My mom said putting the letter close to her chest and standing up to burn the letter in the fire. Any records of the war in any houses are illegal. You can keep your loved one letters so if they die you can remember them in some way if they die. I can't believe he's coming home but I know he'll have to go again and we'll have to live without him. "Jayce dear can you cut up these potatoes for me." My mom said she was humming I've never seen her so happy since I was six.
" yeah I'll be right there," I said standing and my sister looks at me as if I just took away something of hers.
" you said we would go down to the dock," she said looking sadder by the minute I looked outside and the curfew wasn't even close I look at Sylvie and she understands
" Mom I can help and Jayce can go play with Zin and Chloe." She said and mom nodded her head Sylvie moves to the kitchen and starts to peel the skins my mom uses the skin to make broth. Chloe and Zinnia put on their shoes and we go outside we walk to the dock and Zinnia puts her foot in one of the boats but I grab her by the waist and pull back on the dock when security walks by.
" Young man you know you're not allowed to go out on the water at this time don't you." The security said taking out a piece of wood and hitting it on his hand.
" Yes sir I'm sorry we are excited our fathers coming home tomorrow and we wanted to celebrate," I said keeping my sister in my arms to make it look like I was picking her up to put her on my shoulders which I do.
" You know the rules no dock and no looking at water unless your a fisherman and your fishing" there was no point in arguing with security. They still would hit even if I was a Fisherman. I put my hands in front of him and he takes out a small whip and whipped them three time on each hand my hands shake in pain and anger when he walks over to my sister's I look back he raises the whip on Zinnia's hands and I push the security in the water the weight of his armor and all of his weapons will keep him under the water I take Chloe and Zin by the hand and we run I knock on Ana's door and to my relief she answers.
" Jayce what are you -" She said but I walk in any way I show her my hands and she covers her mouth with her hands the cuts went deep into my skin. She grabs my wrist and pulled me to the sink
" Ana who's in here with you," Ana's grandma said yelling her voice was shaky she came walking as fast as she could to the kitchen Ana pushes me under the counter.
" Just the Macline girls Nanna" she said closing a curtain Nanna looks around and gives the girls a hug Nana was a nice woman but can get mean if Ana brings a boy into their house, she had long gray hair that I would assume was black like Ana's and her eyes were Crystal blue with small clouds forming around the rim of her eyes.
" We need to get you two home," She said taking the two girls by the hand and taking them away to our house. Zinnia looks back at me then walks out the door with nanna. Before Nanna steps a foot out the door I sneeze " What was that" Nanna said turning around to Ana and me.
" Oh it was me alleges you know they can be horrible these times of the year," She said and does a fake sneeze trying to get it to sound like me and she did a really good job. Nanna looks at her with suspicion in her eyes but she walks away and walks the girls back home I hope that the security is still underwater and never comes up. Ana pulls me out from the counter and looks at my hand but they're healed. " Jayce you know I'm not supposed to have boys in this house you know I'll get big trouble if your-"
" Ana I killed security". I said picking the door it was after curfew so I don't have to worry about Nanny. I close the curtains and turn to the kitchen were Ana was looking through a crack in the curtain I see security walking to the house he knocked on the door
" I know you're in there open the door or I'll knock it down". The security's voice sounded scruffy and muffled behind the door.
" I'm not going to get I just killed someone you get it". I said looking at her talking to her in a whisper. She rolls her eyes and walks to the door I duck under the counter and close the trap door inside the trapped door I'm scrunched and uncomfortable.
" Oh, Hello Miss. McGinty how are you". The security's voice suddenly changing to nice I roll my eyes I look through a crack in the wood and see Ana leaning against the frame of the door. Acting as sweet as she could.
" Is there a problem sir" I heard her say.
" No is there anyone in here". He said peaking his head in the door.
" No just me". She said her voice was higher than normal and it was kind of annoying.
" Do you mind if I come in?" he said walking inside my heart starts to race I know he's going to find me. I hear a knock on the trap door and I feel a tiny trickle of sweat go down the side of my head I wipe it off my head and my elbow hits the door making a loud noise the security opens the door and I spill out of it the cold from the floor feels nice on my sweating body. Then I feel a whip go into my shoulder but there was no more I stand up fast the whip close to my eye. A whip to the eye could cause blindness but right, when his hand raises Ana, grabs his shoulder and spins him around punching him in the mouth but it doesn't knock him out he punches Ana in the nose causing it to bleed but she keeps punching him. I was impressed that she could punch. He punches her side and judging by the cracking noise he broke a rib. Ana falls to the floor but before he can kick her in the head I put my hand under his arm and my other hand on his back pushing my one hand into his back and pulling my other hand I feel a pop in his shoulder and let go of his arm he holds his shoulder and the other was ready to punch and he did I feel his first go into my stomach and for a split second I can't breath. The minute I regain my strength I throw a punch back hitting him in the shoulder he lets out a hiss of pain but then he punches me in the eye. The part of my eye had a big red spot in it. I feel my head hit the counter and a piercing ache goes through my head and I feel dizzy I feel unbalanced on my feet and I fall over through my blurry vision I see him standing above me I feel for a bottle or something on the top of the counter and I feel a knife blade I spin it around to handle the security still looking at me kicking me I take to blade and dig it into his foot and he stops kicking me he takes the knife out of his foot my vision comes back a little and I stand up the man is right in front of me the knife gripped in his hand I run up to him using blunt force I knock him off balance and he lets go of the knife but he quickly takes out a gun and points it at me blood was dripping from his lips and his one shoulder was lower than the other. I hear a gun go off and I look down but there was no bullet I look at the security who fell to the floor. Blood was filling on the left side of his chest he was dead instantly I look at his left hand looking for a ring thankfully he didn't have a wedding ring. Then I run to Ana her breathing was heavy and her eyes were wide with fear. She couldn't breathe I press my hands to her side she moves a little I knew that this hurt her I look at her with pity in my eyes. I let the electricity flow to her side and I can see the bruise go away and when her rib goes back, she takes a deep breath and sits on the floor looking at the security. I look over and see Dominick holding his father's gun.
" Follow me," Dominick said running away from the house I help An up and we run with Dominick, Dominick throws a gun to Ana she tucks the gun close to her chest. I know she won't shoot it but it probably makes Dominick feel safe.
" Where are we going," I say when we stop behind a house Dominick hands me a gun to.
" I'll tell you when we get there." We stop at the dock and Dominick jumps in the boat Ana follows and I go after them we ride away from our home I think about how worried my mother must be and what I'll tell them when I go back tomorrow. " We're going to fort Helens it a base just off over there we'll be back home before sunrise tomorrow," Dominick said once we were in the middle of the ocean. I take a wage and dip it in water Ana moves closer to me and I wipe the blood from her top lip and her knuckles I give her the rage and she wipes her nose the wage is almost covered in dried blood from her face and hands she dunks the wage in the water and gives it to me I wipe the dried blood from my knuckles and face. Ana takes the wage and wipes the blood from my eyebrow.
She whispers in my ear " Promise you'll never leave me" she said she gave me a kiss on the cheek.
I whisper back at her " I promise and if I do I'll come back." I said giving her a hug Dominick stops the boat the night sky was crisp and cold water splashes up on us. We slowly float through a tunnel and the stars go away. The boat comes to a stop and Ana gets out of the boat so does Dominick then I get out. We walk to a door I grab Ana's hand and she gives my hand a reassuring squeeze we were miles underground the air was cold and the darkness surrounding us was lit by little torches on the walls.
" This used to be a cemetery in till super blood decided to. make it a storm drain." Dominick said knocking on a door a slot in the door opens and a voice comes from it it was a women's
" Do you know the password?" she said looking at the three of us.
" No I forgot but it's me Dominick your boyfriend." He said I was stunned I didn't know Dominick had a girlfriend.
She talks in a giggle. " What's the password." Her eyes were a dark brown they were simple.
" Move over Dominick." Ana said smiling and letting go of my hand " it's 10289" she said how can anyone remember that. I thought to myself the women opens the door and Dominick runs to her she gives him a kiss and he wraps his one arm across her shoulder they walk away and Ana and I follow it dark but there are bright lights inside the light up the tunnel walls are brick and there are so many people they all look like they have powers.
I lean next to Ana and say " were not the only ones." she laughs at me
" I know." I notice Dominick leaves the women and goes into another room.
" What's Dominick doing," I ask Ana when she walks into a room I follow her.
" He has a meeting to go to, there's a bathroom to change in," She said handing me different clothes I walk into the bathroom run the water for a shower and get in. We have showers on the island but not like this the water was warm here and the showers were bigger. The clothes were different from the shirts were tight and they didn't have shorts the had pants that had a tie on the leg bottom and a pair of boots this was the first time I've seen myself in a mirror since they band them I look weaker than most and slimmer than a lot of people my dark hair that I had when I was six is bleached from the suns rays. I move my hand across my square jaw. I smile to see if I have dimples and I have on my left cheek my bangs go down to my eyes and the rest of my hair goes down to the bottom of my neck. I walk out of the bathroom and Ana goes in I put the boots on and tie them a little later Ana comes out of the bathroom a towel wrapped around her.
" I thought you were asleep." She said getting her clothes and a hair tie she walks back in the bathroom and closes the door she comes back out in pretty much the same clothes as me just somewhat baggier. " Do you want me to cut your hair your complaining it too long." She had a pair of scissors in her hand I nodded my head and I sit in a chair she brushes my hair and gets it wet I hear the scissors cut my hair next to my ear I watch the hair fall to the floor, then the next and the next until most of the hair that had that I could have braided was gone. Ana sweeps up the hair. I noticed a necklace it was a circle with three swirls on it.
" What's that," I said pointing to the necklace on her neck she throws the hair in a garbage can.
" It's a Celtic symbol it means trinite, it was from my brother before he was captured by super blood, I would give anything to have him back." I dust the hair off my shoulder and I stand up. There was a small radio playing on Ana's beds and a slow song started to play.
" Your majesty would you like to dance," I say giving her my hand and bowing just to make her laugh she takes my hand.
" Yes I would prince," she said laughing at me. Standing on my feet she wraps her arms around my shoulders and I hold her small waist in my hands. All the sudden the music fades away and I'm just looking at her deep green eyes and her smile. Our feet follow the rhythm of the song " I almost forgot it's August tenth your birthday." She said letting go of my shoulders and stepping off of my feet she goes into a closet and gets out a present it's wrapped in brown paper. I unwrap it and inside are tin soldiers " I know you like to collect soldiers so I got you some, I got them from my cousin in Ireland," she said sitting down next to me she rests her head on my shoulder the tin soldiers had red coats and boots that go up to their knees.
" Ana, is this a rebellion?" I ask putting the tin soldiers back in the box before she can answer Dominick walks in with a smaller box that was wrapped in a brown bag that looked like it was colored.
" Compliments of the little girls next door to you," Dominick said pointing ting outside of the door I look over to see about five little girls watching me they looked to be about Five. When they saw me look over all the little girls turn to one and she runs away. Dominick laughs and says "looks like you've got yourself a little friend." He gives me the present and sits in a chair across from me. " It's nothing much but I thought you'd like it." I open the box and inside is a square shaped locket that opens in four ways inside is four pictures of Ana, Chloe, Sylvie, and Zinnia.
" Thank you, Dominick," I said putting the locket in my pocket when Dominick went away and Ana fell asleep I took a walk around the building it was dark without any lights on and everyone was asleep except for a few security guards watching the door. I hear shuffling of feet next to me I turn to see if anyone was there but because it was so dark I couldn't see anything I hear someone fall and a voice.
" Ouch" it sounded like a little kids voice I look around and see a little boy I go by him and he backs away from me he looks scared.
" It's okay, I'm not going to hurt you," I say putting my hands up in surrender and smiling he starts to trust me and I notice a scraped knee. I look around. " Can I pick you up". The little boy nods his head, I put my arms under his legs and head and carry him back to my room.
I set him on a bed. " I'm scared of the dark can you turn on a light please," he said, I turn on a light looking over at Ana she was still asleep so I talk softly so I don't wake Ana.
" What's your name," asked still with my hand on his knee I look up at him smiling at him.
" Warren and I are five," He said then he adjusts his attention to Ana who was facing us now. " Hi who are you," Warren said, turning around to face Ana after his knee was healed.
" I'm Ana do you have anywhere to sleep," she said looking at Warren who shakes his head slowly. "You can sleep with us," she said sounding reassuring I'm reminded of a mother's soothing voice. " Did you have any food?" she asks and I realize that she's wearing one of my shirts. Warren shakes his head again.
" I'll go get him some food," I said walking to the kitchen I grab an apple and some peanut butter cutting up the Apple I put it in a bowl. When I come back Ana is sitting up in her bed still with my shirt. I didn't know she slept with socks, I hand Warren the bowl and he eats the Apple fast like he hasn't eaten in years. " I'll sleep on the floor if Warren wants to sleep in his own bed," I say looking at Ana putting a blanket and pillow on a small rug next to Ana's bed. She crawls back under the sheets and Warren is already nestled in the pillows asleep.
" Jayce we can't leave him here alone," Ana said talking in a whisper so she doesn't wake Warren.
" I can take him my mom would happy to-" Ana cuts me off and I realize that she really cares about me.
" Jayce one more person in that house and you'll have to go to war longer than you already have to," she said she lets her hand hang from the side of the bed I take her hand in mine. " I can take him it's just me and Nanna I would only have to go for three years and I'm only going to the Air Force." I look at Ana I know that we won't see each other for years and even when I know that it still hurts she's my friend.
