Chapter 4

       Every day is getting worse and worse two cities are being bombed every hour and people are handing out less food ticket. “ Jayce wake up.” Sylvie says shaking me awake “Its mom.”
   I get out of bed and pull a shirt over my head my dad's shirts don't fit me anymore so I've had to start taking shirts from the underground “ I'll wake up Zin and Chloe and go to Ana's you take care of mom okay” I said walking over to Zin and Chloe. I get Zin to wake up but Chloe was a different story, Zin manages to wake up Chloe. We walk over to Ana's place. 
  I knock on Ana's door she answers. “ Come in,” She said a smile on her face. She stands on her tiptoes to give me a kiss I bend over so she can reach my lips.
  “ Gross” Zin said and Chloe agreed with her Ana and I laugh at them.
 “ Just wait soon you'll want to kiss someone,” Ana said we sit down in a few chairs. I look at the clock on the wall only forty-five minutes had passed “ it feels like hours” Ana said standing up and walking to the kitchen I follow her. 
  “ And I have to leave tomorrow I've been assigned to be a footsoldier,” I said I watch a tear form in her eye. When it falls to her cheek I wipe it away with my thumb. 
  “ You better come home I lost my Grandma I can't lose you to you understand” her voice was shaky she starts hitting me in the chest. “ Jayce you come home” she yelled but I knew she was more scared then angered. She falls into my chest I wrap my arms around her. “ Jayce please come home.” Her body was shaking in my arms. “ Promise me you'll come home.”  
  I pull her away from me and look her in the eyes her face was wet from tears “ I promise, I'll come back” I say a sinking feeling goes through my stomach and I realize that I've never even shot a gun how am I supposed to learn in three days. After a few hours, we're back in our house. Our dad is sitting next to our mom who has a new baby in her arms. Zin and Chloe run up to our mom. I stay a little ways away I don't want to get attached before I go off to war. 
  “ What name means,”, Zinnia asked playing with her finger.
  “ We were thinking about May,” Dad said looking at my sister then at me. “Just a little memory.” He said, I walk over to May and look at her we almost have the same birthday just five days apart. 
   That night I couldn't sleep, tomorrow I would leave everything behind. I just remembered I forgot to say goodbye to Dominick. I quietly get out of bed careful not to wake May the floor creaks I look over at May she was still asleep I walk to the door and slowly open the door walking out I spin around and slowly close the door. I run across the street to Dominick's house. I open the window and jump in his room. My leg almost hits a table and I get nervous, but then I remember his parents are gone. “ Dominick,” I said loud enough to scare him awake. He wakes ready to punch me, but then he realizes it's me. 
  “ Jayce what are you doing,” he said sitting up in his bed he turns on a light.
 “ I forgot to say goodbye I'm leaving for war tomorrow.” Dominick looks at me like I have three heads. 
  “ So after three years of saying you don't want to go to war and now that you have a choice you want to go,” he said standing up and putting on a shirt. 
  “ They took people we care about away I'm not going to stand by and let them get away,” I said and Dominick looked like he agreed with me. “Dominick promise me you'll stay here with my family.” 
  Dominick looks at me in shock he's never seen me ask for anything. “ I promise, but not for you, you knucklehead for your family the only ones I have left,” Dominick said still looking at me in shock. I jump out the window and into the street slowly I open the door to my house again and crawl back in bed my feet hang over the edge. I fidget with the locket that Dominick gave to me opening it I look at the pictures. This is what I'm leaving behind I thought. I hear tiny taps on my window I get up to see what it was, it was Ana I laugh quietly so I don't wake anyone. Ana gestures for me to come down in the last few years our parents added a second story with an abandoned house. I jump from one part of the window sliding down I grab a vine that was on the second part of the bottom house my feet hit the soft sand first then my back. 
  “ You know normally guys are the ones to throw pebbles on a window” I aid she looks at me with fear and I knew something was wrong. “ Fort Helen” She nodes her head we run to the dock but before we reach it someone  shoots at us I for a split second I thought we dodged it then a stinging feeling sets into my arm but I don't stop running people are still shooting at us we get on a boat and Ana hands me a gun. 
  “ Make yourself useful,” she said I look at the gun and at that same time someone fires Ana takes the gun from me and she pushes me out of the way. This is a side of Ana that I've never seen  before she was aggressive I move over to the side of the boat were the anchor was as I pull in the anchor she starts firing the gun hitting most of the people that were shooting at us when she runs out of bullets she jumps in the water I was expecting her to go under but she didn't. The air around us suddenly goes cold and it starts to not snow but hail. The hail balls were violently swirling to the people around us the hail goes around me and straight through the security who was running on ice towards me. 
  “ She's a mutant” I heard someone shout someone was running up to Ana a gun in hand ready to fire I jump on the ice and the bullet goes through my chest it should have killed me and the security thought the same I feel my skin heal and I hear the bullet fall to the ice. A piece of hail buzzes past my ear and hits the security in the head but he doesn't die I look at him my head turns sideways the hole in his head healed around the ball of sharp ice and the security smirks at me ready for a fight. He shoots the gun but misses I look back and it misses Ana too. I run up to him grabbing the end of the gun and pointing it at the ice when he shoots the ice breaks and we both fall in the water was freezing my head started to pound but the minute I was under I came back up and the ice around me froze the hole once all the security were dead Ana stops I slide next to her and I catch her when she falls. I look at her eyes and they were white her face is covered and frost and she's shaking from the cold I wrap my jacket around her and the air becomes warm again before all the ice melts I pick Ana up and put her in the boat and I use a small piece of ice to jump in the boat. I keep Ana in my arms using my body warmth to keep her warm. She falls asleep the way to Fort Helen when we get there I carry Ana to the door her body is still cold and she still has frost on her face but her eyes are green again.
  “ Password,” a young boy said it was Warren. 
 “ Warren it's me Jayce” My voice sounds desperate.  
 “ Jayce,” he said the shock was in his voice he opened the door and I walked in still with Ana in my arms she was still asleep and it almost feels like her body temperature is getting lower. “ Ana” Warren said I saw that he was worried but he stayed calm. “ Follow me,” He said and he starts to walk fast I notice he keeps appearing and disappearing we walk all the way to our room it doesn't look like this place was invaded but when I look a little more and most of the people are gone. Warren start a shower and makes sure the water is warm I step in the shower still holding Ana in my arms her body temperature comes back Warren puts a thermometer in her mouth and when the temperature sets he takes the thermometer from her mouth and turns off the water I pick her up again and walk out to her room then I grab a pair of clothes for myself and change into a dry shirt and pants. Ana wakes up and she looks around her eyes turn white again but I run up to her and take her hand. 
 “ It's okay you're okay,” I said hugging her I was scared that she wasn't going to wake up. 
 Ana hugs me “ Your still going aren't you” I nod my head. “ Jayce listen to me I don't care what any says about your powers you use them and you save as many people as you can and keep yourself alive” I nod my head she gets changed in one of my shirts she doesn't have clothes for bed so I 
Let her wear my shirts the shirt goes down to her thigh and she wears knee-high socks her hairs up on a sloppy bun the curl in her hair are not staying under the hair tie she crawls in bed next to me resting her head on my shoulder I wrap my arm around her back. I rub my fingers in a circle across her shoulder. 
  “ This is how I want to remember you,” I say looking up at at the ceiling she already fell asleep, and later I fall asleep I let the dark light of my closed eyes surround my dreams. When I woke it felt like I had just fallen asleep Ana was already awake. In the kitchen, there was a sizzling noise and it smelled sweet.
 “ I thought we could eat breakfast together for one time until you go away,” she said putting a cup of coffee down on a plain metal table and a plate with chocolate chip pancakes. “ They were my favorite thing to eat when I was little.” She said sitting down a cup of coffee in her hand. I take a sip of coffee it was strong so I put a tiny bit of cream in it. Ana takes a sip of coffee that was black. I take a pancake and cut out eyes and a face using two chocolate chips as eyes.
  “ Are you Ana?” I said talking in a high pitched voice she doesn't answer. “Jayce wanted to tell you he's sorry but if he doesn't fight he won't be able to live with himself he also told me to tell you that he loves you.” Ana gives a tiny smile “ there's a smile” I said brushing my thumb on her cheek.  “ Ana can you come with me to the train so I can say goodbye to you.” 
  Ana looks up at me a tiny tear goes her face I brush it away. “ Jayce I'm going to miss you and I'll wait for you,” she said her voice was shaky. Later I get dressed and Ana does to we head out to the boat silently when we reach the train station Ana wraps her arms around me and kisses me it's different when you kiss someone sad. She sniffles her nose and let's go of me fixing my jacket and hat I give her a kiss and walk away. My whole body feels numb as I get closer to the train door. “ Jayce, Jayce wait” I heard Ana say she's running up to me. “ Here” she gave me a picture. “ You said that's how you want to remember me” I put the picture in my pocket next to my heart the same place the locket is. She jumps up and gives me another hug and this time she kisses me with a little more bravery. “ I love you,” she said looking at me that was the first time that her saying that met the most to me.
  I hear the train whistle I give Ana one more kiss and I jump on the train running to a window Ana walks away from the train, I open one of the windows and yell “ I love you too”  she looks over at me and laughs people in the same compartment as me start to whistle and hoot. I take out the picture of Ana and look at it she was in one of my shirts and the knee socks blowing a kiss at me. On the corner of the picture in cursive writing read, I'll see you when you get back by the dock. I smile and put the picture back in my pocket. 
 The train ride was long so I went to sleep. When I got to the camp you could hear orders being given and men chanting I walk into a tent and it was filled with other men and cots I take off my jacket and hang it up fixing my t-shirt someone walks up to me.
  “ Hey what's your name,” the man said I had to look up at him to answer him.
 “ Jayce who are you,” I said looking up at him still.
 “ Max,” he said then turned to everyone else “ that's Hank” he waved he was an older man who was playing cards. “ Those two over there are Trevor  and James, but we uh call them Twee tweedle dee and tweedle dum.” 
  He pointed to twins they looked identical “ we'll steal your money” said one of them.
 “ Or anything for that matter,” the other one said even their voices sounded alike.
  “ That's Theo,” he said pointing to a man who was picking a knife in between his fingers jumping over each one.
  “ Attention,” a loud voice said coming from the door of the tent everyone lines up in a straight line next to everyone I do the same not really knowing what to do. “ State your name private,” the man said looking me dead in the eye spitting in my face. 
 “ Jayce Carpenter Commander” I shout back which I see no purpose in. 
 “ Well, Jayce while you're under this tent you will follow my orders”. He said passing back and forth “ let's move out” everyone runs out of the tent I make it to the front of the line without losing a breath the person next to me looks at me with a look of hatred. “ This is your training today and every day, after that” our Commander said we all look around there, are walls and piles of mud. “ Go in a circle around the whole field doing everything that you see here gogo,” he said yelling I run to the mud jumping in head first. When I get out to run to the rock climbing. I notice that almost every person was falling off so I grab a rope from the ground and tie it. I throw it over the large wall and the rope gets caught on something on the other side I pull on the rope to make sure it was tight and I start to climb. Every time my foot hits a rock it slips a little, but I use the rope to steady myself when I make it the other side it was almost like a slide down I jump and sit down sliding fast to the ground the rest was easy it was running I run to the edge of a tent and judging by the commanders face I was the first one to get past. “ Nice job Private now learn to shoot a gun.” I get nervous and suddenly the sweat on my back and had become a bigger issue. I've never shot off a gun before. I'm going to make a full of myself I thought. I pick up the gun looking at it I point at the Target and shoot it doesn't even hit the base I look around to see if anyone saw but I don't think anyone did at least I hope no one did. I aim the gun again but at a different angle and it hits the red spot I go to the next Target and aim at the same angle I did before. Later that day we all go down to the cafeteria a few people sit down next to me. 
 “ How did you do that how did you learn to shoot like that” someone said his plate was piled with food and he saw me looking at the plate. “ They've cut food supply where I'm from I'm Wyatt by the way,” He said let go of his work and offering me his Carmel colored hand I take it he shakes my hand fast pretty soon I don't see it. “ Sorry I just found my power and I'm still getting used to them,” He said letting go of my hand and holding his arm.
 “ I'm Jayce,” I said laughing a little I take a bite of bread it was stale and it tasted like it's been frozen for fifty years I ate it anyway because I'm hungry I eat the potatoes which weren't as bad but they weren't like home. 
  “ So why did you come here,"Wyatt asks with a mouth full of food. 
 I swallow the food that I had in my mouth. “ They took a lot of people I knew,” I said then I took another bite of bread. 
 “ I'm here because my pops were here and he died I'm hopeful that I might be able to continue what he started,”   Henry said and I felt sorry for him he didn't have a father and mine came home only missing a leg. “ Hey what's that” Henry said he saw the chain from the locket. I take the locket out from under my shirt and open it.
 “ These are my sister's,” I said pointing to the three small pictures of my sisters. “ And this is Ana,” I say I stuck my thumb on her face. I've only been here for a day and I already miss my life back home. 
 “ Crikey she's a beauty,” Wyatt said I close the locket and put it back on my neck.
