nestle myself in my pillow before waking up, but I didn’t have to worry about waking myself up because I had other people to wake me up for me. “ Wake up there's school.” I heard Sylvie say, I woke up and she was right next to the latter. I jump up a little, I wasn't expecting her to be right there. “ You're really easy to scare you know that”. She said hopping down from the latter and I follow her. “ Mom why do I have to wear this” I heard Sylvie say tugging at a shirt that looked like a dress shirt she was also wearing a long skirt. “ You know I hate wearing school uniforms.”
“ Because this its the rules.” She said her voice was kind. Another uniform that I knew was mine. She handed it to me and I go back to my room to get changed, the clothes were baggy and too long for me, but it was all they had. They said they had a son I wonder what happened to him. “ My don't you look handsome.”  My aunt said picking Chloe up and handing her to Sylvie. Chloe squirms in her arms I put on a pair of shoes that were too big for my feet she gave me Zinnia, kissing me on the forehead she turns to Sylvie giving her a kiss on the forehead head and told her. “ Take the two of them to the Zinkmans, okay”. Zinnia grabs a piece of my dark brown hair we walk to the Fisher's house and Sylvie knocks on the door.
“ Mrs. Zinkman,” she said and a young woman answers the door, a little boy is  hiding behind her, he looked to be the same age as Sylvie. He had a uniform on too, I would  guess he was going with us.
He runs out behind his mother and runs to Sylvie “ Sylvie” he shouted, giving her a hug. “ Hi I'm  Dominick,” he said looking at me a smile on his face. Then he walked away to get his bike.
“ Thank you Mrs. Zinkman,” Sylvie said and Mrs. Zinkman nodded her head. I don't think she could talk, or maybe just not speak english. She walked back in closing the door with my two sisters inside. “ We need to get our bikes,” Sylvie said running back to our house and I follow her I make it there first. I get my bike and make my way over to Dominick.
“ Your fast what's your name,” He said looking at me with a smile that I don't think he could wipe away.
“ I'm Jayce I'm from the capital,” I said and Dominick let's out a small laugh. “ I would laugh if I didn't grow up there,” I said smiling at him.
“ I heard all the people born in the capitol don't know how to ride a bike,” He said smiling, “ did you sneak out and ride a bike.”
“ Everyone learns I just learn quicker,” I said as we reached the schoolhouse it was small, but it looked like there are a lot of kids by looking at all the desks. The teacher walks in and she looks to be older than most of the elders at the Capitol.
“ That's Miss. J” Dominick whispered, he put his hands flat on the desk. I look at them and noticed tiny cuts and he must have noticed me looking at them. “ I got in trouble for stealing a pencil.” He said looking at the cuts on his own hands. “ Miss. J hates children, but she loves disciplining them she says it helps with our teachings,” He said, his voice getting quieter as she walks past him.
She named off the names of students her voice sounds cold and old and it brings fear into my body, “Jayce Maclin” she said.
“ Here,” I said my voice was quiet and sounded scared and I think she sensed that
“ You must be new here but when I take attendance we don't say here we say'' present '' She said her breath smelled like an old closet and when she would say words that started with an S she sounded like a snake, and she looked like a snake she had high cheekbone, and a very thin body.
“ Sorry ma’ ma,” I said putting my head down I was scared and I hated it I hated her and I only knew her for a few minutes.
“ Sylvie Maclin,” she said whipping her head around I could tell by the way she said my Cousin's name that she made a reputation.
“ Present,” she said, biting her nails
“ It's unladylike to bite your nails” Miss. J said walking over to Sylvie, smacking her in the hand Sylvie bites the other nails when she turns around.
“ Liam etherwood,” she said a little nicer then she said to Sylvie.
“ Present,” he said he had light blonde hair and sat straight up in his chair.
“ Dominick Zinkman,” she said whipping around to him
“ You know, I'm here you're looking right at me, or are you blind because if you are I can say Present,” Dominick said kicking his legs up on the table. Sylvie let's out a small laugh and I whisper to Dominick.
“ Maybe she just wants to hear herself talk” that was a big mistake.
“ Mr. Macline  and Mr. Zinkman I will see you after class,” she said, her voice sounded almost evil.
“ Anastasia  McGinty” she called and a small voice answered.
“ Present” She had a slight accent I couldn't tell what it was for sure but I knew it was different I looked over and it was a girl she had curly hair and deep green eyes her desk was filled with books and she had her nose buried in another book.
“ Samuel  Raquel” Miss. J said looking around the room a pen pressed against her lips and her eyes sharp.
“ Here,” He said kicking his feet up on the desk ,  biting his nails, and started reading a book.
“ You are not allowed to do any of this,” She said walking as fast as she could to the back of the class. She took him by the hand and drug him to the front of the class took his hand and put it on the desk her long fingers  curled around a rule flipped it over on it side and hit him with it. I could hear his crying he walked back to his desk and his dark hands were pink on the palm filled with cuts. That day couldn't have ended soon enough but it wasn't over for Dominick and I we walked up to her desk. My heart was pounding and I could tell Dominick was scared to. “ You two know you are not permitted to talk in my class don't you, and you know you can't talk about the teacher in that way here or at home.” She said opening the door to her desk and taking out a ruler when she raised the ruler to my hand but she stopped when someone walked in it was Mr. Zinkman
“ What is it you think you're doing,” He said taking the ruler out of her hand and throwing it at the window that was broken his chest raised and fell and I watched his hands shake in anger. “ Do you know what the penalty is for hitting a child with a ruler Miss. J” He said taking Me and Dominick and putting us behind his back.
“ Mr. Zinkman you of all people should know children should be punished they will never listen to you if you just yell at them,” she said standing up she was at least a foot shorter than him.
“ I of all people know that children will listen to you more if you're nice to them,” He said and I take back my original comment he looks like he could kill every person in an army right now “ I will make sure you will not continue teaching.” He said looking into her eyes a muscle twitches in Miss. J's slim cheek.
“ Sir please pity an old woman,” she said, her voice was suddenly scared and her eyes filled with tears I realized she had nowhere to go if she gets fired, I would almost feel bad for her if she wasn't so hateful.   We walk out of the classroom into the sun I squint my eyes because the light was too bright, eventually, my eyes adjust and I open them.
We get on our bikes and Dominick said “ I'll race yah” his smile was bright probably happy we don't have to go to school and when we do go back, we won't have the same teacher.
“Your on" I said smiling we race all the way to our houses Dominick is faster he is born to be a runner there no doubt. I reach my house just a few seconds after Dominick “ I think that was a tie” I said walking to Dominick's house realizing that I never thanked his dad for saving us from punishment.
“ No way I won fair and square” I walked into Dominick's house which was smaller than my house I see Dominick's mom putting three plates of food out for the three of them. I see Dominick's dad taking off his boots
“ Thank you, Mr. Zinkman,” I said standing next to him I had a frown on my face but I didn't know why.
“ Your welcome kid,” he said giving me a slap on my back “ you might want to go on a home kid it's getting late and you probably don't want to get caught today". He said walking me to the door his kind light blue eyes waving me goodbye as I walked to my house.
“ Ah there you are, sweets, how was school,” my Aunt said cutting up some vegetables they were different than the ones Wednesday.
“ It was okay I got in trouble and the teacher got fired,” I said sitting down next to Sylvie who started laughing my uncle was reading the newspaper
“ Unbelievable Silest if these people keep rebelling they're going to go into war” He grunted taking a swig of beer and went back to reading.
“ Who is going to go to war,” I asked leaning against the table looking at a picture of a man shaking hand with what looked like a scientist.
“ Super Blood and the capital,” he said, putting down his paper to talk to us. “So you got in trouble what for.” He said his eyes were wide with excitement
“ Jayce doesn't encourage,” my Aunt said and my Uncle's smile went down and he went back to reading his paper mumbling something as he read that night the table was filled with Sylvie talking about a fight that happened when she comes home. At every mention of the fight, a large amount of regret pours through me. I missed the fight and got a teacher fired because I had to say something. When we went to bed I slept on the bottom bunk that night and I dreamt of the teacher and cuts on my hands crying in the middle of the classroom and everyone laughing at me.
