Let's get on with it:
A letter arrived in the Miller household last week, the week before school started. Mr. Miller opened it and read swiftly. He smiled thoughtfully and slid it into his desk.
Damn.
Except for Odette Miller, it was all anyone could say on that first day back to school.
All the girls from Riverview High will be undistinguishable this morning. This is because they will all have dyed their hair they will all be wearing the same style clothing, and they will certainly all be quiet and put-together, a trait not very common at the school.
I wasn't really trying to stand out, but blending into the crowd was too much work, so I decided to sport leggings and my most comfortable sweater. I looked in the foggy reflection of myself and pulled my hair into a bun. Not bad.
Picking up my leather satchel, I snatched a pen and a small notepad off my father's desk. Although the caste system was being torn away, my father wanted to keep his job as a painter. The desk was mainly for show, but we all enjoy sketching on its dark mahogany wood from time to time.
Thinking about sketching leads me to be reminded of my mother and little brother. I jog upstairs and touch her arm with my palm, a silent and always welcome gesture of affection, even if it really was just a form of alarm clock. She would wake up my little brother after I left for school, which was in less than five minutes.
I glanced at the clock and noted the time. 6:50. If I left now, I could get to school before my best friend, Maddie. I made my way to the foyer and picked up my sack lunch, then I made my way outside, locking the door as it shut behind me.
I walked swiftly towards the school, which conveniently located just two blocks from my home. Some people might not like living right by a school, but I've lived here my whole life and never had a problem.
As I walked inside, Maddie ran up, her bouncy short black hair flowing behind her. It was longer than the last time I saw her.
"Odette, Odette!" She called, waving a flyer in her left hand. "Come look at this!" I thought it was odd that she hadn't greeted me yet, but smiled and took it gently from her.
"Nice to see you too, Maddie." I said, my eyes skimming the title. It was labeled, 'A New Selection?' I rolled my eyes but continued reading.
The only information I retained fully was that Prince August will be, by his request, holding a selection in the upcoming months. Maggie couldn't contain her excitement as she jumped up and down."The-prince-is-holding-a-selection-and-my-mom-said-she-wants-me-to-put-my-name-in-the-lottery!" She said in one breath. Her expression changed, "Will you be putting yours in too?"
I laughed in her face. I didn't mean to, and she was a fragile creature. I rested my hand on her shoulder.
"What? I'm just now hearing this, Maddie. Besides, I don't think this is really my thing." I placed the flyer back in her hands and hugged her gently. I heard her mumble and squeezed her slightly. I pulled away, looking into her beautiful natural doe eyes, her brown hues so dark they looked black. "However if you want to, go ahead and try it! You would make a great queen. I can already see it. Queen Madison and King August." She melted in my arms and grinned sheepishly at me.
"You think?" She laughed, covering her lower lip self-consciously in thought. I pushed it away, grasping it.
"I know, Maddie. Go for it."
