Today was the day. I had waited to fill out the form because school had pushed it back until it was only a small stressor in my mind.

I opened the neatly folded paper and filled it out with care:

With that, I checked the mirror one more time. I practiced my smile a bit and found the best angle.   Saying goodbye to my little brother, William, I held the envelope tight in my hand and walked quickly to the city center. It was there that I realized exactly what I was doing. I walked towards the line of girls waiting to get their pictures taken, and  took my place. Judging by how many girls came after me, I figured I was in the middle of the group. A good place, I figured.

I was in the line for about twenty minutes before I took a seat and handed the photographer my envelope. He opened it and placed it on a small side table. He then turned back and snapped my picture, slid it into the envelope, and sealed it with a large sticker labeled, 'Waverly'.

He told me I could go home, and results would be shown on television within the next week. We had that week off of school because so many girls were too busy with preparations in case they may be one of the lucky thirty-five. This was convenient for me because it meant I could use the time to study for finals that would take place after the break. Unless I got selected, of course.

After what seemed like months, the day came. My family gathered in front of the television and watched Ethan Reed cue in the selected.

From the Whites province: Bernadette Smith

From the Yukon province: Erica Watson

From the Allin province: Valencia Rivers

From the Bankston province: Abigail Johnson

From the Hudson province: Asha Lynn

From the Labrador province: Josephine East

The list went on for awhile, a significant pause between province and selected.

From the Waverly province: Odette Miller.

The household was not loud, as I probably would have expected if I was hoping for this outcome. It was silent. Everyone looked at me with a collective excitement, their mouths moving but creating no sound. I saw a brief picture of me on the screen, but as he continued the list all I could hear was the phone ringing.
