After school was over, I walked home, arm-in-arm with Maddie. She was ecstatic, daydreaming aloud. We walked slow, but still got home within five minutes. I knocked once and pulled out the house key. I slid it in the lock and opened the door.

"After you, Dear." I said in perfect prince dialect. She giggled and stepped in.

"Odette, this is a perfect opportunity for you! What is there to lose?" She smiled and tucked a strand of my wavy blonde hair behind my ear. I shrugged, straightening my back.

"I don't, know mom... This really is a big deal." I tried to explain myself, but she cut me off.

"You are entering. End of story." I sighed, giving up with a defeated smile. Before leaving that day, Maddie let me copy down the date in which I enter. Once she left, I looked into the den, seeing my dad working hard on a new art piece. I knocked on the wall twice, smiling as he looked up, his glasses on the tip of his nose. He pushed them up and stood, opening his arms.

We embraced and he kissed my head lovingly. I stepped back and showed him the slip of paper.

"I'm entering The Selection," I said quietly. "Well, not that I have a choice. Mom wants me to." Dad smiled lightly and opened the desk's top drawer. He pulled out a fancy white envelope and handed it to me.

Knowing exactly what it was, I opened it carefully. It was the lottery form. I touched the golden-edged paper wistfully. Suddenly knowing why he had saved this, I understood the importance of my decision. If I possibly got selected, I could meet the prince. I could possibly be the next Princess.

My father took my hand.

"I trust you, Odette."

sorry about the time skip in the middle there, the plot was lacking and I needed to pick it up
