Two weeks later and the phone calls subdued to about ten a day. People are still coming to the door and congratulating me, but Maddie hasn't come yet. I wondered why. She couldn't possibly be mad at me, I did as she asked! Even if she didn't believe me, I was leaving for the palace within the next week. That was proof enough, in my opinion!
I suddenly began to cry, considering the consequences of my actions. If I hadn't signed up, I would have a chance to make up with Maddie.
My mom heard me crying and walked over to me. She was quite soft spoken, but her quiet encouragement was more than I could ever ask for. She smiled and drew a blanket around my curled up figure.
"Someone's here to see you. Come into the dining room when you're ready." I quickly regained my composure and walked over, leaving the blanket on the chair behind.
"Hello." She greeted, pushing her oval specs up the bridge of her nose. "I'm Julie, nice to meet you Odette." She shook my hand and took out a jar.
"Because you are one of the selected, you are considered property of Illéa. As our responsibility, we like to keep you looking good for the public and feeling good to complete for the heart of our beloved Prince August." I rolled my eyes internally."These are vitamins." She pushed the jar towards me. "You should have one a day, no more. As of right now, it is your responsibility to take care of yourself." She pushed a folder filled with papers towards me. "Fill these out today, and I'll come by tomorrow to pick them up." Julie checked her watch. "One last thing before I head out," she pushed a single piece of paper to me, which I read as she spoke it's text:
"Odette Miller, by signing this form you will be confirming that you are, in fact, a virgin." I signed right away, I didn't want to appear hesitant. Of course I was a virgin! Who was she thinking?!
"Good. And now," she pushed a folder of papers towards me, "sign these tonight and I will come by tomorrow afternoon to pick them up. While I am over I will help you ready yourself for your goodbyes." With that, she left in a hurry.
As quick and as carefully as I could, I filled out the paperwork. After two hours, I was finished. As my family was eating dinner, my little brother piped up.
"Odette, when you go to the caste, can I come with you?" I smiled lightly at him.
" I wish you could, Axel." I said to him. "But I don't think it would be proper." He looked disappointed so I continued. "Well, are you wanting to be the next princess of Illéa?" He scrunched his nose.
"Of course not! I'm a boy!" He put his fork on the table angrily.
"Well then you'll just have to watch it from the television." At his glum face, I added, "But don't worry, if Queen America was able to send treats to her sister, I'm sure she'll allow me to send treats to you, as well."
"Well, when are you leaving then?" Suddenly his mood changed, and he seemed he could not possibly wait to have me gone.
"Tomorrow." I said quietly, because maybe if I don't acknowledge it then it will go away.
My dad interrupted our conversation."Speaking of tomorrow, it's time for bed, Odette. You need your beauty sleep, dear." I sighed and went to my cozy room for what will hopefully not be the last time. The thought of leaving this made me cry, so I ignored it and curled up in the dark folds of my quilt.
