"Is it normal for the girl to ask the guy out?" I asked Charlotte for the 10th time today. She rolled her pretty green eyes like always, and suppressed a laugh.
"Yes, Katie, it is. Now stop being a wimp and go do it." She smacked me harder than I think she intended, shoving me forward a couple inches. Luke Hemmings stood a few feet away. I was so close to him, I could almost taste the rejection I would get on my tongue. I couldn't help but look back at Charlotte. She smiled widely, giving me a half-hearted thumbs-up. Thanks. Suddenly the books I held fell to my feet.
"Oh my God! I'm so sorry!" An accented voice said loudly. This is not happening. Luke stood easily a foot taller than me, and he held out my books that I probably dropped and he didn't knock out of my hand. He smiled like he did when he was embarrassed; his lip ring sticking out and his teeth showing.
I was frozen, screaming at myself to do something. Luke's smile faltered a little, and I snapped back into it. I laughed taking the seemingly heavy books from him. "Thank you, I'm so sorry." I said embarrassed. He smiled for real this time. Man, he was a sight to see.
"You're Katie, right?" He asked in a mild attempt at conversation. How the hell did he know my name? I nodded, smiling more than I intended. My cheeks almost hurt.
"You must be Luke." Why couldn't I just talk like I wasn't in love with the guy?
"Luke, yeah." He laughed this time. It was like the singing of angels. I shyly brushed a piece of hair away from my face. I studied him while he looked a the ground for a split second. Why did he look so embarrassed? Without warning, his phone beeped. He checked it politely, then he smiled at me. Ugh I'm dying.
"I'm so sorry.. My mom wants me home. I'll see you around?" His smile grew big, and his cheeks were beet red.
"Yeah. I'll see you around." I said, hoping my voice wasn't as high pitched as I thought it was. He smiled again, walking toward the doors of the parking lot.
"Holy shit!" Charlotte screeched behind me. She grabbed my shoulders and hurled me backwards. A huge smile covered her face. I think it went well?
"Did I do okay?" I asked her, laughing harder than I should have. She nodded hard. I swear there was a tear in her eye. She hugged me hard, and I couldn't help but love her then.
"My Katie Cat is growing up!" She screamed, causing numerous heads to turn towards us. I swear she was crying now. I hugged her back and I couldn't help but wish she was Luke.
