Calum nonchalantly lights up the joint the pyscho path boys gave him, eyeing the old brick of the high school. The smell of marijana drifts into my nostrils, stinging the inside of my throat. My busted lip throbs harder than a beating heart, and I can't but cry out when my tooth brushes it. The soft hum of the bell inside rings, and the front door of the school opens. The guys out front run behind a group of trees, in fear of the principle walking out and catching them in the act. To my surprise, Calum doesn't move. He looks over to where the creaking door opened, like he's expecting someone. I'm ready to dart behind the building when someone walks from the front. Then I see she has the same wave of brown hair as her.
"What the hell are you doing out here?! And you're smoking? Marijana! C'mon Calum I expect better from you." The girl scolds Calum, taking a wiff at the joint in his hand. She sounds just like his mother, and I now realize who this is. It's Katie.
"You should expect less, then." Calum smirks as he takes another puff of the joint. She doesn't seem amused, she seems serious. As they walk closer I can see she has black all over her face. I see that it's mascara. Has she been crying?
Her breath catches in her throat when she sees me. I don't even bother to smile, or make her feel like she's wanted here. I just stare at her, trying to keep my face emotionless. It's hard, especially when a tear runs down her face and she starts screaming at Calum.
"This isn't funny! I see why you wanted me to come here, why you wanted me to skip class. You feel sorry for me, don't you? You think I need him!" Her last sentence is broke with a sob. The remainder of the mascara on her lashes is washed away by her tears. Calum looks at the ground, like he's not sure what to say. I can't blame him.
"Katie you don't understand why-" Calum mumbles, but he's broken off by another half screamed-half sobbed sentence.
"No, you don;t understand. You have Charlotte who's beautiful and anything and everything a guy wants. now you're trying to hook me up with him, What if I don't like him? Then your whole efforts would be worthless piles of shit right? RIGHT?!" Calum's tan cheeks are so pink he's lost his tan complexion. He doesn't say one word, I'm not even sure if he's breathing. He just takes the words standing like a bullet. He knows she's right. Katie doesn't stomp away like I expect; instead she slides down the brick wall and sobbes into her shirt. Her cries are silent but her shoulders violently shake and she sniffles quite a lot.
The silence isn't awkward for me, but it is for Calum. He studies his Vans like they're the most interesting things ever. I watch them both as they sit in their own worlds. I need to say somehting now.
"Calum... thanks for trying?" I whisper to him. It sounds more like a question and less like a thank-you. He just noddes, and his eyes flash to me for a split second. Then he's back to studying his shoes.
Katie stiffens suddenly, I hear her breath catch in her throat again. She makes a sound that seems like a muffled cough, then I realize that she's laughing.
"It's amazing, how I thought you actually liked me Luke. It's funny." She lifted her head up, wiping away black tears with no smile on her face. She looked me dead in the eye, blazing with humiliation. I turned away thinking of how I should say anyone of it.
"I do like you Katie. I should don't have time for a girlfriend..." I told her. She laughed again.
"No, it's okay Luke you can just say it." She shrugged when I looked back at her. I felt a warm sting behind my eyes.
"If this is all it would take for us both to be in tears than I don't think we would work out." Katie's actions stopped as soon as the words left my mouth. Her eyes went glassy as her mouth dropped open.
"Okay." Was all she said. She slowly got up, walked over to Calum who was in just as awe as Katie was and have him a hug. She mumbled an apologetic goodbye to him, and left towards the school.
"What the fuck and why the fuck would you say something like that? You're more of a dick than me, Hemmings." Calum said without a punch of humor. I was speechless. I'd just lost the girl of my dreams.
