"So, I guess this is goodbye," Lacy looked at me with hope in her eyes. "I'll miss you, but you go out there and make something of yourself," I cheered. "I will and you be safe and don't do anything that I wouldn't do," She warned. "Sure thing," I said giving her a slap on the back.
I sat on her bed and looked around and noticed that the room was empty. All kind of thoughts popped in my mind, but I tried to block them out. I started humming a song to myself. Then, someone knocked on the door. What could anybody possibly want, I just wanna be alone right now, I just sat there hoping they'd get the hint and leave.
Next thing I know, someone pushed the door open. There standing was a lady about 5'4, blond hair and red scrubs with some black crocs on with white socks. I didn't say a word, all I could do is stare at her. "Monique Wilson," she looked at me then back at her clipboard. "Yes," I said. "Right this way and bring your belongings," she instructed.
Not again, I thought. Grabbing my things, I threw it over my shoulder and followed her out of the room. "You will be going with Mr. And Mrs. Brown, today." I expected them to some old out of shaped old people, but they looked to be in their late thirties or early forties. I took a few steps closer to them, so that I could introduce myself.
"Hi, I'm Monique," I held my hand out to shake their hands, but the lady shooed it away and pulled me in for a bear hug. "Your so beautiful," she cried. "Thanks," I said muffled due to her crushing me in her grasp. "I'm Clarice and this is my husband Harold," she introduced. "We are proud to welcome you to our family, we have an older daughter probably around your age and a son that's eighteen about to head off to college." She doted.
"Do you have and sibling?" Clarice asked. "Yes ma'am, I have one brother named Tucker." "Where is he?" Her eyes sparkled."He got adopted awhile ago, but he wrote me and he's doing good." "Let's get you out of here, so you can meet the other children."
Harold drove us to what I assumed is their house and we pulled up in a driveway at least an hour later, by the time we got there I was knocked out. "Wake up, we're home," Clarice gently shook me. I blinked a few times then opened my eyes. The house didn't look half bad, it was a brick house with a porch swing and two rocking chairs in the middle of it was a little wooden table.
"Let me help you with that," Harold said grabbing my stuff. He seems nice, but he's probably just gonna take advantage of me like all the other men, I thought to myself. A sinking feeling took place in the pit of my stomach and I rubbed my stomach. "Kelly ! Tito ! Come here, I want you to meet someone," Clarice yelled through the house.
One of em smacked their teeth, while the other groaned before coming to meet me. The girl was about my age she had her hands on her hips. When I looked at the boy, I didn't wanna take my eyes off him. When our eyes connected, it's like we had a moment. I quickly looked away, before anybody noticed.
"Kelly and Tito, this is a new addition to the family. Her name is Monique and you should make her feel right in home, right?" She looked at them like you bet not say something stupid. "Yes ma'am," they both responded. "Finally, its a girl around here that I can talk to," Kelly said. Tito looked like he wanted to say something, but he didn't. "Go show Monique the guest room," Clarice said looking at Kelly.
"Girl, mama has been talking bout you for weeks. Monique this Monique that, I'm glad you finally here."
"This is your room," Kelly said flipping on the lights. A queen sized bed was in the middle of the room, a dresser up against the wall with a TV on top of it. The room was white with black letters that spelled my name out and light up stars were in the ceiling. A desk was beside the closet with supplies neatly stacked on top of it. "Its not much, but we always find a way to manage," Kelly smiled.
"Do you wanna go to my room and we can talk?" She didn't even let me respond before she pulled me in the opposite direction leading to her room. She sat on the bed and picked her phone up and started typing on it. "Sit down, girl you family now," she moved her legs so I could have a seat. "I saw you and my brother looking at each other, y'all aint slick," She pressed her lips together as if she was waiting for me to say something.
Thinking about her brother, I grinned. "You like him, don't you?" She bounced on her bed. I blushed and I didn't know how to respond. I mean, I love Kendrick, but he aint here to take care of my needs. I'm sure he gone get his taken care of, regardless. "Monique, Earth to Monique," Kelly waved her hand in my face a couple times breaking me out my thoughts.
"Huh?" "If you like him, just tell him. I mean, he is my big head brother, but aint had no girlfriend in a year and he need something or somebody to keep him entertained," she winked at me. "Why, he aint been with nobody in a year?" I asked curiously. "His girlfriend broke his heart, when she cheated on him with his homeboy. He almost went to jail that night, because he beat the shit outta ole boy and almost broke his neck." "Wow," is all that could come out my mouth. "Yea, he aint really tried to trust no female after that, but I could see he getting frustrated every time he play ball. You should try and talk to him, maybe he'll listen. If not, what are you really losing?" Kelly said. "Nice talk, I think I'll do just that," I said crossing my fingers and walking out.
Kelly is a cool people, I thought to myself. I walked up to a door and heard music blaring, I hope this is Tito's room. I knocked a few times, then Tito opened the door a little. He looked so sexy with his black sleeveless shirt and basketball shorts on. "Whats up?" He asked looking me up and down. "Can I come in?" I asked. He opened the door, and moved to the side letting me in.
"You can sit down," he said. I took a seat on his unmade bed. "Sooooo...he said. "I like you ! I blurted without even thinking. Tito raised an eyebrow and looked at me forming a grin on his face. "Is that right?" He asked. "I knew this was a bad idea, I'll leave," I said swiftly getting up. "Wait ! Sit down, you don't have to go. I was just giving you a hard time," he confessed. "You cute, but I aint really had no solid relationship in a minute. I just don't let nobody in my life anymore without knowing what I'm getting myself into." "I understand," I replied. I got up to leave, but Tito grabbed my hand.
"What are you doing?" I asked looking down at our hands. Tito pulled me into him against his chest. "Its something bout you, I don't know what it is." My eyes begin roaming all over him, then I felt something poking me. Immediately, I jumped to my feet like I had sat on fire or something. "Now you gone have to take care of it," he smirked at me. "You wish," I flipped my hair and walked out.
"Come eat! Clarice yelled. We all came out, and waited for Clarice to get out of the way so we could make our plates. "What you done hook' d up, tonight mama?" Kelly asked sniffing around like a hound dog. "I cooked some smothered pork chops, cream potatoes, stream beans and made some biscuits from scratch," She said wiping her hand on the dish towel moving aside."Dang mama, you done went ham, maybe we need to adopt somebody else tomorrow," Tito teased.
"You gone love my mama biscuits, they just melt in your mouth," Kelly bragged as we all took a seat. "I take everybody getting along," Clarice smiled at us. We all nodded our heads in agreement, we couldn't even form a sentence since was tearing into the food in front of us.
"Make room for dessert, because I made some banana," Clarice bragged. We all groaned, because we were full and miserable from stuffing our faces. Maybe dreams can come true, because I finally have a family that loves me unconditionally, I smiled to myself.
