"I don't get it," Tucker said throwing his work down. "Don't act the fool, just ask for help," I said swatting him. "What you need help with?" I said looking over his work. "This dumb division, I hate it," he said folding his arms. "Look, it's not that hard all you have to do is......
After I explained how to do the division, Tucker understood. My nerves calmed down, and I remembered I had some oatmeal cakes left inside my jacket. "You wanna play I spy?" Tucker jumped to his feet. "Yea!" We played I spy, until we heard someone knock on the door. We knew to settle down and be quiet, so we could hear what was going on.
The knocking grew more persistent. "Hold on hell, I'm coming," we heard mama yell. It sounded like someone important, so we stood closer to the door to hear better. "Mrs. Wilson, I'm here with child services concerning your children. May we take a look around and have a word with your children?" The lady asked. "Who the hell called child services on me, both my children are well taken care of. Y'all get the hell out of here I know my rights." Mama raised her voice. "Ma'am, we are just looking out for the best interest of your children, besides we have a warrant."
We sat down quickly as we heard footsteps approaching the door. "Come here," the lady said looking between me and Tucker. Both of us stood up and walked to the living room and took a seat on the dingy worn out brown sofa. The lady begin asking us questions and we didn't know what to say. Honestly, we were scared of what mama would do to us, when they were gone.
"We'll talk to each of you in private, maybe you'll feel more comfortable that way." The lady got up and walked with Tucker to our room. My mom sat there in silence and I could see she looked ghostly. The look on her face was priceless, I was struggling to hold back laughter. I wanted to say,"Yea bitch, they finally caught up to ya and just laugh in her face.
What's going on in there? An hour had passed by and I was still sitting there. It was a bit nerve racking, because my mama was right next to me. I had never been this close to her without her cursing me out or hitting me. The door opened and I was relieved, until I saw tears in Tuckers eyes.
"What's wrong with my brother?" I asked giving the lady a death glare. The lady waved me into the room and Tucker walked in close behind me. He must didn't wanna be by mama by himself, I couldn't blame him.
"Tucker has informed me about everything, so I have no choice but to place you guys in foster care. At those words, my eyes welled up. "We can't, I rather continue living in this hell, because all me and my brother have is each other. I don't wanna be put into foster care, because that could be risking us getting separated." "I'm sorry, but we have no other choice." "What if we move in with my bf, he can take care of us.."I said before I realized what I was saying.
Kendrick is a drug dealer, and there's no way I'd get him involved in this. "Never mind," I said quickly. "Why's that?" She asked looking at me intently. "He's moving next month," I lied. "Oh..ok. Well gather your clothes and shoes and we'll leave." Tucker and I looked at each other, then we grabbed all our clothes and put them in a garbage bag. "Come on children," the lady called us out and we left. "Where you taking my children?" Mama asked standing to her feet. "You know what, take em, they ain't worth nothing to me," she spat.
The silver impala was the nicest thing we had ever been in. It was so clean, and the ride was smooth. We pulled up to a big white building and she swiped her card and we entered. Inside the building, there were a bunch of doors and windows. Apparently, the rooms were categorized by different age groups. Such as: 1-5, 5-9, 10-15 and 16-17.
My brother and I hugged when he was going one direction and I was going another. "You'll be able to see each other during the three lunch period's," the blonde lady assured us. Watch my brother walk away was the hardest thing I had to endear.
Following the lady into a room, she explained everything to me. "This is where you'll sleep," she said pointing to the top of a bunk bed. "Like the other lady said,"You'll get three eating periods. Breakfast, Lunch and a little snack later in the day. "What about my brother, what if someone wants to adopt only one of us, we have to stay together, he'll be scared if I'm not with him." "We will do the best we can to keep you two together, but I can't make any promises," she said then closed the door behind her.
The room was pretty big, bigger than what I was used to. There were three bunk beds, a bookshelf full of book. On top of it were placed a few magazines. I walked in the bathroom to see how it was. It was a shower in the corner and another door that led to the toilet.
There was only one other person in here and she hadn't spoke since I got in here. "Hi," I said. "Hi," she responded. "What's your name?" I said taking seat on the floor. "Lacey," how'd you end up in here?" She asked looking up to look at me. "My mom is not fit to take care of me or my brother, so child services showed up and took us," I explained. "Oh, at least your mom kept you...
"What do you mean?" "My mom left me on somebody's doorstep when I was born, since I kept acting out they put me in here," Lacy blinked back her tears. "Its ok, I sat beside Lacy and assured her everything was gonna be alright. We talked some more, then I climb to the top to try and get some sleep.
