TWENTY FOUR: TRYGGWhen Brunnhilde and Trygg had left Vanaheim to return to Asgard, she noticed how much more at ease he seemed to be, but it wasn't enough. She turned to leave but he took her hand, leading her to his own home. The warrior was apprehensive at first, but she somehow knew he needed her presence at the moment.
He offered her something to wear besides her full Valkyrie armor and she took it graciously, quickly changing before meeting him back in the kitchen. They were still inebriated, but they had grown tired of partying and laughing, so it felt more like it was bed time. Brunnhilde couldn't even stand straight and her eyes were half closed while Trygg spent ten minutes stirring tea that wasn't even hot anymore, staring aimlessly at the porcelain cup.
"You're kind of pissing me off," she muttered after minutes of complete silence. All that was heard was the wind outside and his silver spoon lightly tapping the teacup every now and then. "You've barely said anything to me, and...I don't know what I did, but we can forget it even h—"
"Sorry," he said quietly, "I feel—I don't know."
"Listen," Brunnhilde crossed her arms and moved to stand in front of him, "whatever you felt—"
"I don't want to continue like this," Trygg confessed.
She frowned. "Like what?"
"Like, like, a liar of some sort. Like I'm hiding something from you."
"What could you possibly be hiding from me?" she asked, an uneasy smile forming on her lips, "you can't keep a secret to save your life."
He puffed out a short laugh, smiling only slightly. He stopped stirring and licked his bottom lip, obviously thinking of the right thing to say. "I'm...I was—um..."
Brunnhilde searched his eyes as he fumbled over his words. It was cute, but she hated how he wouldn't just say what was on his mind. He seemed so stressed about whatever it was.
"So—" Trygg coughed, looking away for a moment and shoving a hand through his hair, "—I'm...I'm a woman."
And the Valkyrie, barely able to keep her posture, was as clueless as ever. "What does that mean?"
"I'm a woman," he repeated more confidently, his jaw clenched and his tone low and careful, "I was born a female, and I still am in certain ways, but I never felt that way, so I changed who I was, and I'm happier now," he shrugged, "this is who I am, and...and I thought you should know that before anything else between us happened."
Brunnhilde stared at him for way too long, quickly understanding what he meant, and the shock apparent on her face. He didn't look any more relieved before he told her this.
