Takes place right before S3, Ep1
ONE thing that was annoying about Gilbert studying to be a doctor was that he thought he knew everything. At first, it had been fun for a challenge-and it still was-but today had been enough.
Mrs. Stacey was teaching the class about diseases and every time Anne was about to answer a question, Gilbert would cut in and say the answer.
"Just because he does a medical apprenticeship with Dr.Ward doesn't mean he's a doctor!" Anne said to herself as she tromped through the leftover snow on the ground. She was so busy complaining to herself that she didn't even notice that tree root hidden by the snow.
One minute she was ranting to herself about Gilbert taking every opportunity to call out the correct answer, the next thing she knew she was facedown in a patch of snow.
"Ugh!" She called as she sat up. "Could this day be any worse!"
Apparently, it could.
As Anne tried to stand up she felt a horrible pain shooting through her left ankle. She winced at the pain and gripped the same tree whose roots had forsaken her.
"It's probably just a bad bruise." Anne said to herself, holding on to the one thread of optimism she had at that moment. She stood up, and then took one step on her ankle and ended up falling backwards.
Anne groaned. She took her arm and put it around the tree, and slowly she stood, being sure not to stand on her ankle and she took one hobbling step forward. Then another.
Then there was a gap between the trees. Anne reached out trying not to step on her left foot, and started falling forward. Her reflexes kicked in and she stepped down on her left foot and cried out in pain.
And then she fell into the snow again.
Anne felt like crying. There was no way she would be able to get home to Green Gables at this point. She could barley make it three inches before she fell again.
Just as she was beginning to think about her new life living as a recluse in the woods would go, (as surely, she would be stuck out here forever,) she heard a familiar voice call out to her.
"Anne? Are you alright?" Gilbert said.
Anne turned to face him as he came down the path. As if she wasn't already having a bad day.
"I'm actually quite fine thank you very much." Anne said crossing her arms.
"Then why are you sitting in the snow?" Gilbert asked.
"Why are you even headed this way? Your farm is down a different path." Anne retorted, not wanting to admit that she tripped.
"You left these over at my house the other day. Mary sent me to come return them." Gilbert said holding out the baskets he was carrying.
There was a pause.
"So why are you sitting in the snow?" Gilbert asked.
"If you must know, I was walking along and tripped over a tree root. I'm alright but I was just checking to make sure I hadn't torn my dress." Anne said. She was too proud to admit to Gilbert that she hurt herself. Especially since she knew that he would try to doctor her and after that day's lesson she'd had quite enough of 'Dr. Blythe.'
Gilbert looked at her skeptically. "Alright, if you're fine, then stand up right now." He said.
Anne furrowed her brows and tried her best to push herself into a standing position, but as she had been in between the two trees she had no way of bracing herself.
She shook as she tried to stand, and seeing as she was only one leg, she couldn't stand very far. Anne started to fall forward and that's when Gilbert grabbed her arm.
Anne immediately felt sparks along her elbow-where he had grabbed her-but she felt the throbbing in her ankle more and the latter was much worse.
"Clearly you're not fine." Gilbert said, still holding her arm.
Anne rolled her eyes. "Thank you very much for that Doctor, but I figured that much. Now, if you'll let me go I'll be happy to head home."
Now it was Gilbert's turn to roll his eyes. "I can see that you're not going to be able to walk. Let me help you."
Anne thought about it for a moment. "If you must." She said.
Anne wrapped one of her arms around Gilbert's shoulders, and one of his arms went around her waist.
And so they hobbled on down the path towards Green Gables. But they weren't making very good progress. Anne kept wincing in pain, which caused to Gilbert to get worried and say stuff like: "I have to look at that when we get you home."
Gilbert stopped. Anne took the opportunity to grasp a tree to her side and Gilbert let go of her waist.
"Here." He said handing the baskets he had been carrying with his free hand.
She took them. "What are you-" Anne was cut off by the fact that Gilbert suddenly swept her off her feet and was now carrying her bridal style.
"Gilbert Blythe you put me down this instant!" Anne cried looking up at Gilbert.
"No," he said. "If kept going like the way we were we wouldn't make it to Green Gables until tomorrow. I'll put you down when we get there."
Anne tried to be annoyed, but she had to admit that it was nice being that close to Gilbert. She could almost hear his heart through his chest and it was a lovely noise.
They came to Green Gables in no time and Anne felt disappointed. She felt so calm in Gilbert's arms. They had barley spoken on the walk over but she knew that he must have been feeling the sparks too.
As Gilbert put her down and they headed to the door, Anne wondered if he had that feeling in his stomach just as she did.
