SPRING had come to Avonlea and it was magical. The grass was turning a lush green, the birds were chirping, and there were ever so many flowers lining every path.

Mrs. Stacy decided to take the opportunity she saw and spend a lesson outside.

"Alright class! The Barrys have been nice enough to let us spend time by their lake and learn about the environment that surrounds it." She said leading the group down towards The Lake of Shining Waters.

Anne was thrilled. She loved spending time outside and The Lake of Shining Waters was one of her favorite places.

"Oh Diana isn't this the most splendid day to spend time by the Lake! And the most magnificent lesson too!" Anne said, wrapping her arm around her bosom friend's.

"I suppose it is quite romantic." Diana said raising an eyebrow and nudging her to the left. To the left of the two girls there was Gilbert Blythe, standing with Moody and Charlie looking over at Anne.

"Diana, whatever you are thinking is surely wrong. Gilbert is simply my friend." Anne said, following Mrs. Stacy down to the lakeside.

"Today you will be pairing off into groups that I have assigned to examine the environment of the area you are in." Mrs. Stacy said to her pupils.

She rambled off the class's names into pairs until she reached the end which was; "Anne and Tillie on the dock. And be careful girls!" She yelled and the pair made their way over.

"What do you suppose we're supposed to study out on the dock?" Tillie asked, a little glum she hadn't been paired with one of the Pauls, but happy she was with Anne.

"Maybe we could look at the plants on the lakebed and anything in the lake?" Anne said as the two girls arrived.

Tillie smiled. "I'm so glad you're so smart."

They worked for around fifteen more minutes before Anne started walking towards the end of the dock.

"Be careful, Anne!" Tillie called after her. But Anne was too distracted by the flowers floating on the lake. She didn't even notice when she stepped onto a lose board.

She was so close to the flower that she-

Meanwhile, Gilbert and Moody were busy studying the trees by the lake. Gilbert was preoccupied by writing down the shape of the leaf when he heard Tillie scream.

He turned-along with the rest of the class- to see something moving in the lake and Tillie standing at the end of the dock.

"Tillie what is it?!" Mrs. Stacy called running down to the dock.

"It's Anne! She fell in the lake!"

Out of the corner of his eye, Gilbert saw Diana drop her notebook.

"Anne can't swim!" Diana yelled following Mrs. Stacy down the hill.

Soon, the whole class was running down to surround the lake. You could just barley see Anne's head Bob above the water before going back under.

The class went into a frenzy. Ruby was crying, Charlie was yelling something about finding a doctor, but all Gilbert could focus on was the little bit of red hair he could just barley see.

He didn't have to think twice.

As the cold water of the lake surrounded him, Gilbert temporarily forgot why he was even in the lake in the first place. And then he saw her.

Anne was flailing around and as Gilbert swam close to her, he could see that she was slowing down meaning that she had almost run out of air.

Gilbert quickly grabbed her arm and pulled her up to the surface. He was grateful when he heard her coughing up water and he pulled her towards the dock.

Mrs. Stacy pulled Anne out of the water, and Gilbert pulled himself out.

"T-thank you." Anne said through chattering teeth as Diana wrapped her arms around Anne.

"You're welcome."
