Takes place around early S3
DELPHINE wasn't a hard baby to handle. That's what everybody who was around her had gathered in her first few months in the world. And she continued to be a nice, clam baby.
That was, until Mary and Bash went out of town for the night. Gilbert was left in charge of little baby Delphine, and it had started out fine. She had eaten, taken a nap, and had generally been fine. Until right before Gilbert was about to eat dinner.
That's when the crying started and it just wouldn't stop. Delly's wails pierced through the quiet of the house was loud enough to make the windows shake.
"Just one night, you'll be fine!" Gilbert muttered to himself mocking the tone Bash had used earlier as he changed her diaper for the third time. The new diaper did nothing and she continued to scream.
Gilbert was about ready to give up, but luckily for him, Anne was making her was up to the Blythe-Lacroix residence. Marilla had sent her with a basket full of scones, as Anne had made too many earlier in the day.
Anne knocked on the door of the house and when he opened it, Gilbert was a bit shocked to find the flame-headed girl on the other side. "Anne, what are you doing here?" He asked over Delly's crying.
"I made too many scones. Marilla told me to bring you some. Is Delphine alright?" Anne responded.
"I don't know to be honest. Mary and Bash went to visit Mary's friends in Charlottetown and Delly hasn't stopped crying." Gilbert said.
"Do you want some help?" Anne asked.
Gilbert pondered this for a moment. He certainly didn't know what to do and was very much open for suggestions. He nodded his head and Anne stepped into the house.
"I assume you've already tried feeding her and changing her?" Anne asked.
Gilbert nodded. "Naturally. But she won't stop crying and I don't know why."
Anne set the basket down on the table and picked up Delphine from where she was sitting. She rocked her back and forth in her arms a few times before feeling her forehead and taking a good look at her.
"I don't think there's anything wrong with her, she's probably just tired but isn't falling asleep." Anne said rocking Delly a little more before laying her down in her bed.
"Ok, now why didn't that happen when I did it?" Gilbert asked after a few minutes when Delphine and fallen asleep.
Anne laughed. "Babies often don't know what they want and just cry until they figure it out." There was a beat of silence between the two. Gilbert couldn't help but think about the way she held Delphine and rocked her, and how Anne quickly got her to calm down, and how she would look holding their children-
No
That was not a thought Gilbert should be having about his friend.
"Well, I should be going. Try not to wake her up." Anne said turning to leave.
"See you at school." Gilbert responded as she left.
He hoped that one day he could see Anne holding a baby. But for now, that was a wrong thought.
