An unexpected tragedy [14]

Daniel and Zachary were walking down the beach, hand in hand, when Daniel got the phone call containing horrible news.

"So sweetheart, I've been thinking and I think we should paint our room." Zach said as he rubbed his thumb along the top of Daniel's hand.

"Oh yeah, and what colour are we going to paint.." Daniel was interrupted by his phone ringing, "sorry zachy, I gotta take this call, it's mom."

"Hello? Mom are you alright?... I can't understand you, slow down. What happened?...holy shit, we're on our way."

Fear flashed across Daniel's face, which replaced Zachary's happy expression with worry.

"Daniel, sweetheart are you alright? What's going on? You're worrying me, is Keri okay?" Zach wrapped his arms around his boyfriends body in a hug.

"Moms okay. It's my dad. He got into a car accident. Moms already at the hospital, I told her we would be there."

The whole ride to the hospital Daniel and Zachary were silent. Dreadful thoughts filled Daniel's mind. Zach had his hand resting on the older boys thigh as an attempt to calm him.

When they entered the hospital, the two boys had no clue where to go so they asked a nurse at the front desk.

"Um hello, my name is Daniel Seavey. I was wondering which room my father was in. His name is Jeff. Uh, Jeff Seavey."

"Your father is in room 527 on the 5th floor. Due to the condition that he is in, only immediate family members are allowed in." She looked at Zach. "I'm sorry but you will have to wait in the waiting room on that floor."

Once they got up to the 5th floor, Daniel gave Zachary an apologetic look. "Sweetheart, it's fine. Go see your parents."

When Daniel entered his father's hospital room, he saw his mother sitting in the chair beside his bed. She was crying.

He ran up to Keri and instantly wrapped her in a hug, "momma how is he doing?"

Keri wiped her tears and looked over at her husband laying on the hospital bed, looking still, peaceful. Even with the wires and tubes.

"They said it's nothing too serious, except for the fact that when he wakes up he may or may not remember certain things."

Daniel hoped to god that his father forgot that he was homophobic. All Daniel wanted was to show off Zach to his whole family, not just Keri and Anna.

Eventually after getting bored; Zachary fell asleep in one of the chairs in the waiting room. He wasn't mad though, he understood what Daniel must be going through.

Daniel and his mother were cuddled together when Jeff finally woke up. Daniel shot a text to Zach letting him know.

As soon as Jeff fully came to and looked around the room, he got a sour expression on his face.

"Keri, what is this pansy doing in my hospital room. You know I can't stand his kind."

"Jeff, he's your son and he's worried about you. Is it that hard to just love him for who he is? After all you've done to him, he still came as soon as I called."

"Well, I don't care. You shouldn't have called him in the first place. Now, get him out before I call the nurse here to get security."

"Jeff, you're acting unreasonable..." Daniel cut his mother off, "mom it's fine don't worry about it. Clearly my presence isn't wanted here."

Daniel said goodbye to Keri and kissed her on the cheek. When he got to the waiting room and saw Zachary, that's when he lost it.

Zach instantly got up from where he was sitting and enveloped his boyfriend in a bear hug, "what's wrong, my love?"

Daniel continued falling apart in his lover's arms, he'd gotten used to his father's derogatory words towards him but he thought this time would be different. He cared so much because although his father hates him, at one point in his life, Daniel idolized Jeff. 

"You know the theme of the book? Yeah.. let's just say that my dad and brothers weren't just on a spontaneous fishing trip when they found out we were coming."

Zachary's heart shattered knowing that Daniel's father still didn't accept him after all this time, "oh sweetheart, I'm so sorry."

After they got home from the hospital, Zachary and Daniel spent the entire night cuddling while Daniel cried.

Zachary would give anything to fix Daniel's hurt but there was nothing to do except be there for his boyfriend.

"It'll be okay my beautiful, beautiful, beautiful, beautiful boy."

And that's when Zach found himself wanting to do anything at all to carry Daniel's pain so that his beautiful boyfriend didn't have to.
