The next morning, Zagan and I stayed in my room. He had brought a suit in with him the night before so he could change in here. I didn't want to leave him, so it was obvious he was just trying to be nice to me. I couldn't complain about that.
"V, are you ready yet?" He whined from the bathroom door. He apparently had to brush his hair, but my maids were busy getting me into a pair of black pants and blue blouse. I was shocked that I was able to be so underdressed, but I wasn't complaining. Then came the tiara which was simple as well which was also nice. I kind of hated being the only selected in one.
I walked to the door when I was finished and pulled it open, "Impatient much?"
He pecked my cheek before moving to the mirror. "I think you looked just fine in your pajamas."
I blushed and walked out, going to put on shoes and grabbing my crutches. He came out later with his hair gelled. I reached up to mess it up, but he caught my hand, "I'd love to let you mess it up, but my mom asked me to look professional."
I rolled my eyes and pouted. He smiled and kissed my hand before opening the door for me. I walked through and let him help me down the stairs. We went to the front doors, and Owen was waiting.
"About time you two showed up," He teased. I rolled my eyes and stood my crutches by the door before standing next to my brother.
Zagan cleared his throat, and I turned, about to say something about the fact that I had to stand with family when I noticed the look on his face. It was the look he had before he did something he didn't really want to do. I grabbed Owen's hand and squeezed it.
He turned to me and gave me a weird look before listening to Zagan, "I'm so sorry to do this so quickly, but it was either do this or face having nine girls while everyone else has five. If I call your name, then congratulations, you have made it into the top five. If I don't call your name, please head to your room where your maids will help you to get ready to leave."
"My top five are Angel, Brittney, Taylor, Rachel, and Victoria."
I let out a breath as my name was called. I caught Owen's smirk out of the corner of my eye, but I decided to ignore it. Then I saw Cassidy hugging Angel goodbye. She had tears welling in her eyes, and the excitement I had felt seconds earlier burst.
She waved awkwardly at me, and I waved back frowning as she left. "You okay?" Owen whispered through the corner of his mouth.
"Yeah, just a little shocked is all," I said, turning to the car that had just pulled up.
Bianca's boys all clambered out of the car looking frazzled. I had to hold back a snort as Derrick joined them looking sharper than the others. I heard Bianca snort from in front of me. She was as unimpressed as I was.
Owen's girls all came next. They looked a lot like Bianca's boys when it came to looking prepared. "Far right," Owen whispered.
I looked to the far right of the group to a girl in a green blouse. "She's pretty," I muttered back, faking a smile when they all bowed to us.
I was happy when we went inside. I was less happy when the selected were separated from the royals. I sat around the table with the other girls who all seemed a little glum except Brittney. It made sense though. Zagan had just eliminated most of our friends. Angel and I lost Cassidy. Taylor lost Peyton. Even Rachel lost Nathara and Catherine.
I spotted Selina walking behind her selected and grinning at me. I smiled back at her before turning to my breakfast and eating quickly. I wanted to stop by the infirmary before chilling in my room. I knew that tomorrow was going to be a long day of meetings, so I wanted today to go as calmly as possible.
