chapter four
complicationsTHE NEXT morning when y/n had awoken, she found miles asleep on the floor beside the bed. his curls were messy and his shoes were still on. she smiled softly at his peaceful slumber. though when she neared him she smelled the bitter aroma of alcohol. her nose scrunched up at the harsh scent.
"miles, miles" she whispered gently into his ear, her hands and knees on the floor next to him. "hmm" he hummed turning over and wrapping his arm around her torso. her face flushed with his touch as she lay next to him on the ground. "wake up miles" she attempted to hid her smile, though it still managed to shine brightly on her face. he inched closer to her completely cuddling her. her face was an even brighter shade of red as she ran her fingers through his curls.
"miles!" she giggled. he blinked a few times, unable to see as the sun that spilled in through his window blinded him. he sat up and began to stretch. she sat up too and watched his sleepy figure stand up. "it's so bright" he groaned and closed his curtains to hid the sun. he laid back down next to her putting his head in her lap. "i'm exhausted" he whispered shutting his eyes again and curling up as if he were a cat. she began playing with his hair again and asked, "what time did you come back?"
"i'm not sure to be honest" was his reply. his voice was deeper than usual as well as more raspy. she bit her lip, wondering if she should even ask the question that was lingering in her mind. "ugh my head hurts like a bitch" miles groaned before getting up from his comfortable position. "we should probably get ready for breakfast, mrs. grose makes the best waffles!" miles sat up a small smile rested on his lips as he faced her.
"oh yeah okay! um m-miles?" y/n couldn't hold back her curiosity. "yeah?" his head was in his closet as he was searching for a new sweater to wear. "why do you smell like beer? did you drink?" she asked, her voice was almost silent. "no, but quint did" miles did not face her. "do you guys go out late like that often?" she questioned while nervously picking a hangnail. this time he did look at her, but she wish he hadn't. his gaze was dark. "no, but that shouldn't matter to you anyways because it isn't your business" his tone was dangerously low, yet he had a smile. it didn't comfort her like before.
"i-i'm sorry" y/n quietly blurted. miles simply nodding before putting his hand out for her to grab. she accepted and he gently pulled her to her feet. he pulled her in for a hug, sighing happily.
y/n was used to these quick mood changes from miles. she didn't mind it, she always told herself that miles was struggling and couldn't handle his emotions well. yes that was it, right?
"c'mon, i can smell the waffles from here!" miles grinned not bothering to change as he was much too excited for breakfast, he pulled y/n along and headed to the kitchen.
"good morning darlings!" mrs grose smiled warmly at the two. "good morning miles! good morning y/n!" flora greeted and proceeded to hug each of them. y/n felt so at home with everyone's warm welcomes.
"i have prepared your breakfast! miles' favourite, waffles" mrs. grose sat on the teal arm chair and watched the children eat. a tall women with pale blonde hair entered the room next. "good morning everyone! oh! you must be y/n, what a pleasure to meet you, i am miss jessel" miss jessel held her hand out to shake. "hello!" y/n smiled, she had a thick french accent.
quint also came in through the back door, his heavy footsteps echoed throughout the room. "mornin'!" he greeted. "jessel" he smiled and warmly touched her shoulder. her lips tighted into a painful smile, her face drained of all color. "hey quint!" miles happily greeted. "kiddo" quint smiled back handing miles some sort of medicine and winked. miles smiled warmly. quint proceeded to carry on his journey through the kitchen and to the living room. he sat besides the fire, shutting his eyes momentarily.
miles took the medicine and laid back on the couch, yawning. "flora, we must work on your assignments today. you have another french quiz, though i know you'll ace it!" miss jessel smiled warmly at flora. "okay!" flora excitedly said rushing up to follow miss jessel to her study room.
"now what are my little devils going to do today?" mrs. grose asked a warm smile lay on her lips. "i was planning to show her, her room today! and maybe take her to the maze" miles moved his eyebrows up and down. "now you be careful in that maze miles, don't get poor y/n lost!" mrs. grose warned before standing up and beginning to pick up the empty plates. miles grinned, though his expression had turned dark. "oh, i would never"
after breakfast miles intertwined his fingers within y/n's gently pulling her through the house. her hand felt small within his, his hand felt as if it were ice while her's was warm and comforting.
he stopped at a room, quietly opening the door. "here's your room!" he smiled, letting her hand go and laying on the queen sized bed. "it's so pretty!" y/n admired. paper doves were pinned to the ceiling making it as if they were flying. the wallpaper was a robin egg's blue, painted branches and flowers decorated the walls. her bedding was silky white. the closest was filled with all the clothes she had brought with her. after looking around a bit she lay next to miles. "i love it, and i love it here with you. it's just amazing" y/n admitted, looking over at miles and scooting closer.
miles smirked, shifting his body till he was on top of her. his hands pinning her's down. "m-miles?" she bit her lip nervously. "so you love me?" he grinned. "g-get off" she whispered, it was as if he had been covered in a cloud of darkness. everything about him had seemed off. "answer me." his teeth were gritted as he murmured those two words. "get off!" she squirmed and pushed him off.
"so what? you don't than?!" he shouted, standing up from the bed. "no i-" confusion washed over her like a wave, fear was slowly meeting it's way into her mind. "you don't love me do you, that's a good thing, because i could never love someone like you" his words cut through her heart like a dagger. yet he sat on the floor, shaking and crying like a child. and that broke her heart more than anything.
"stop, just stop miles" she was quick to rush over to him. her hands resting on his shoulders, he pushed her off. "just leave me alone" his voice cracked, he furiously wiped away his tears. "miles, i-i do love you okay? i do, i love you so much. don't say that i don't because i do!" he accepted her touch this time and melted into her embrace. weeping into her shirt and shaking violently. she held him close, whispering a sweet lullaby and leaving kisses on his forehead.
"i love you too."
