chapter two
her arrivalTHAT VERY summer y/n was invited to stay at the fairchild house hold. it took plenty of convincing for her mother to actually allow her to leave, though her father suggested that perhaps they vacation. he brought up the fact that mrs. montgomery had always wanted to visit italy. so with both her husband and daughter pleading, mrs montgomery finally gave in. it was already a month into summer vacation, y/n was dying to see her best friend.
on july 17th y/n had taken an awfully long car ride to the fairchild residence. she was absolutely restless the whole ride. her mind spun with everything her and miles would do that summer.
miles was busy as well, busy cleaning the house throughly. attempting to make it absolutely spotless. the old house had gotten a bit dusty. he sung at the top of his lungs some old tune his father used to play. he danced around the kitchen table while placing flowers in the middle of it. the grand dinning room table seemed much warmer with the pretty lilies he placed in the center of it. the whole house had begun to feel warm again. little flora followed after her older brother, dancing and singing, giggling and smiling. it was adorable watching the two, it was the first time in months seeing them as happy as they were. and it was all because of her.
when she finally arrived everyone went silent. miles stopped singing and immediately looked out the window. it was very bright outside, the sun shining cheerily at the reunion about to occur. "she's here! she's here!" he grinned brightly racing out of the house to greet her. he ran so fast the pebbles beneath his feet were thrown into the air. she got out of the car quickly and raced to meet him. the two embraced, though with miles racing so quickly to reach her they both fell into a giggling mess of pure glee. "i missed you!" she cried, burying her face deeper into his chest. "i missed you" he whispered, he closed his eyes and embraced the warmth he was so cruelly missing.
flora stood beside them, waiting impatiently to meet the famous y/n montgomery that her brother just wouldn't shut up about. eventually flora couldn't wait any longer and tugged on her older brother's sweater. "oh right! y/n this is my little sister flora! and flora this is y/n!" miles smiled as the two pulled apart.
"hi! my brother told me all about you already! you're so pretty just like he said!" flora giggled. miles hit her shoulder lightly and blushed profusely. y/n laughed at miles' embarrassment. "you're even prettier! your name fits you perfectly, you're as pretty as a flower" y/n hunched down to reach flora's height and smiled. flora's eyes grew with happiness. "thank you" she had a small smile on her face.
"hello miss montgomery, i presume" mrs. grose smiled warmly. miles put his arm around y/n's shoulder, as if to show her off proudly. "you may call me mrs. grose" she offered her hand to shake. "hello! it is a pleasure to meet you!" y/n gently shook her hand. "miles, assist your lovely guest with her luggage. than show her around, but be back before night falls!" mrs. grose ordered and held flora's hand as she led her back to their home.
miles grabbed all her luggage and started walking back. "oh let me help you." she attempted to take a bag from his hands. "nu uh! you're my guest, plus i got it" miles smiled and walked inside. y/n shook her head and laughed as miles struggled to get through the door.

miles had held his hands over her eyes as they walked to the stables. he gave her no time to look around the house and instead insisted that he was going to take her to a much more interesting part of the house. "no peeking" he whispered in her ear as she shivered. "just don't make me bump into anything" she giggled. "never" he replied, it seemed that he had a permanent smile that rested on his lips whenever he spoke to her.
he lifted his hands from her eyes once they had arrived. she gasped and ran to see the horses. the stable was quite large housing two horses. he laughed at her excitement and followed close after.
"and who do we have here?" a gruff voice spoke from the darkness. y/n yelped and instantly hid behind miles. miles was busy laughing at the scare she endured, when a tall man walked out from the shadows. the crunch of hay beneath his feet could be heard as he came closer. he too was laughing. once miles caught his breath he introduced the two. "y/n this is quint, quint this is y/n"
"ah so this is the lady you always speak of" quint smiled. "i'm sorry to have scared you sweet heart" quint apologised. "oh no, it's okay really! it's a pleasure to meet you!" he smelled of cigarettes. "i was going to take her for a ride if that's okay" miles walked over to one of the horses. "you know i don't mind, is miss jessel still here?" quint pulled off his working gloves. miles looked to the floor than back at the horses. "she left already, to uh to yet groceries " he replied quietly. "damn, well i'll be at the house, make sure to take care of y/n here. she sure is a beauty" quint winked at the girl before walking back to the main house.
"this here is delilah! she was uh she was my mother's horse" miles stroked a beautiful white horse. "she is so pretty" y/n admired. "she is isn't she" miles agreed. he saddled her up and led her outside. miles climbed up with ease. "c'mon she doesn't bite!" miles held his hand out for her to grab. y/n admired the scene a moment before she smiled, placing her hand in his as he lifted her up. she squealed and wrapped her arms around his waist holding on tightly. miles kicked the horse sharply and they were off.
they rode through the grassy fields of the fairchild property. the sky was a baby blue as soft, cotton, white clouds dotted the blue sky. a soft breeze blew the sweet scents of summer. y/n closed her eyes and let the warm sun rest on her face. that was until miles decided to speed up a bit.
"miles slow down!" y/n shrieked, he simply laughed as a response. "miles!" her grip tightened as he did not slow, he took her to a patch of daises, knowing how much she enjoyed making flower crowns. "woah girl, slow down" he gently pulled on her reigns as the horse slowed to a gallop and eventually stopped all together.
miles jumped off first than held his hand out for y/n to get down. y/n gasped unable to produce words from the pretty little flowers. miles smiled and sat down in the middle of the flowers. y/n took her shoes off, letting the soft grass tickle her toes. she was wearing a pink sundress, her hair let down, resting messily on her shoulders. "what?" she smiled, resting her hands on her hips. miles had been caught staring. "nothing!" he blushed before laying down abruptly on the grass. she giggled, than begin picking some daisies. miles twisted blades of grass around his fingers.
his mind was at peace, nothing to really think about. his focus was on y/n's soft humming. relaxing underneath the hot summer sun. he threw the grass from his hands and placed his hands behind his head. his eyes slowly shut.'
he was dozing off when she was finally satisfied with the number of daises she collected. she smiled at miles, laying next to him. she began ripping the stems shorter from the fragile flowers and placing them gently in miles' hair. his lips curled into a smile, as he opened an eye. "what are you doing?" he muttered closing his eyes when the sun had blinded him.
"nothing." she whispered, her breath tickling his ear. he suddenly rose from his position and tackled her. she squealed and began to scream and giggle as he tickled her mercilessly. "stop, miles!" she managed to scream. eventually he did, his arms held him above her as he shook his head like a dog. the daises fell from his hair and onto her face. she giggled softly, he gently tucked a piece of her hair behind her ear.
she gasped and looked at something behind him, she pushed him gently off and sat up. he turned to see where her gaze had gone. she was watching the sun set. the blue had faded and the sky filled with deep oranges and pinks which was all turning into a lavender. sun down already? he hadn't realised how fast the time had flew.
"isn't it pretty?" her gaze utterly fixed upon the sky. "it is, isn't it?" he replied, though his deep brown eyes
were fixed on the angel sitting in front of him.
