Breathe. That's the only thing I could manage to say as I woke up from my dream. The nightmares have been a recurring problem for a while now, but this dream, this one seemed to stir me up more than usual. I caught my breath and slowly crawled out of bed to turn off the blaring alarm. As my feet hit the cold floor, I attempted to prepare myself for the long and obnoxious school day ahead of me. "Mom, get him out of my room!" I shouted looking at my seven year old brother.
"Get what out of your room?" she yelled back with a gritty morning voice.
"The annoying kid you gave birth to! For God's sake he's not my responsibility! You should take care of your own child-or should I say children!" I scolded as I ran down the stairs.
"You need to watch your mouth young lady. Just because you're sixteen now doesn't mean you can rule the world." my mother lectured as she gave Luke his breakfast.
"Bye mom! Love you too!" I said sarcastically as I walked outside into the harsh wind.
My life used to be somewhat normal until Luke was born. My mother used to take me to the park, and my father and I got ice cream every Friday night, but when he found out she was pregnant, that changed everything. The day he found out she was pregnant again my father left us in the middle of the night without warning. I mean I guess I should have seen it coming. He didn't act the same around her. After she told him the news they stopped holding hands, and kissing each other, and all that stuff. Not to mention why would a wealthy man live in a run-down trailer with an annoying kid and a bossy wife. At first after he left she tried to be strong and be a good single mom, but after a while she just stopped trying. A year after Luke's birth she started leaving in the middle of the night, leaving for weeks at a time, forcing me to take care of Luke. I brushed my black and blue hair behind my ears and cranked my old car trying to push away the lingering memories, but when I looked up I saw my mom waving at me. Something wasn't normal about the wave though. It was if her eyes were screaming "Please come back" yet she was showing her perfect smile. I swallowed hard and pulled out of the gravel driveway.
