At lunch, Meghan wasn't eager to go, but she walked very slowly to the end of the line. Immediately, people in the back were doing rock-paper-scissors to see who the unlucky one to stand next to her was.
Stepping forward, Jonathon said to them "Save it! Just go away!"
"I feel bad for you, want to trade places?" a person in line asked him.
"Nope, now go crawl back to your place in line." Jonathon retorted.
Meghan was surprised at the generosity, but she knew it wouldn't last long; it never really did so she just turned her face away and stared at the floor. When she finally got her lunch, she walked to a table, but she didn't need to worry about who she sat next to because all the people there just yelled "EW!" and scrambled to another table. She moved around her apple and stared at the ceiling, wondering what the world would be like for her opposite. Lost in her thoughts, she didn't notice when Jonathon sat across from her. When she noticed, she just got up, dumped her untouched tray, and ran to the bathroom. Of course, Jane was in there.
"Oh, hey there, Meghan! It's cool seeing you here!" she said, laughing evilly and pushing her into the wall. "I heard that you've been talking to my boyfriend. You better step back, or I'll make your life worse than it already is! I promise!" As she walked out the room, she laughed her stupid laugh that Meghan hated.
When she was sure she had left, Meghan slowly got up and examined her head. It wasn't too bad, not nearly how it was last week. She was lucky, this time. She walked to the janitors' closet, gave him a dollar, and sat in the corner with her head down until the bell rang for her next class.

In Social Studies the class had to go into partners, Meghan's worst nightmare, but today wasn't so bad because Jonathon chose her and everyone else went to the other side of the room so they wouldn't have to be next to her. After they were done working on whatever they were working on, Meghan decided to confront Jonathon.
"Why are you being nice to me and not on the other side of the room with everyone else? Can't you see my life is terrible? Can't you leave me alone? I don't want anyone else to go through what I'm going through and if you be my friend, it will happen to you. Jane told me if you keep being near me she'll make my life worse than it already is which is kind of hard to do, considering everyone hates me." She said to him.
"Well, I think that everyone should have at least one friend." He replied.
"But I don't have any."
"Well you do now."

After all the taunting on the bus and Meghan was home, she sank onto the couch, and when her mom asked her how her day was, she didn't have to force a smile and lie, she simply said "Today wasn't too bad."

As the days went by, Meghan was feeling better and she was finally making something of herself. Jonathon was her only friend. She had no one else. He made her happy. It made them laugh when Jane would see him and her talking and to see her scoff as she walked down the hallway. Life was finally better. Those days didn't last long.
"Can we talk?" Jonathon said. "When we're at lunch?"
"Sure." Meghan said skeptically.
When lunch came around, Jonathon sat at their usually table, in the corner. Meghan was thinking of things he was about to say so she could prepare herself. But she wasn't prepared for what he really said.
"We can't talk anymore." Jonathon said to her.
"What? You're joking, right?" Meghan asked him in astonishment. She really hoped he was joking, but she didn't see a small smile creep up on his face anymore.
He shook his head. "I'm sorry, but it's ruining my relationship with.....Jane."
"I thought you were over her, when we were laughing. Remember?"
"Yes, I remember. But we can't do that anymore. We want to get back together. We both agreed on this, but to do that, we can't talk anymore." His stare was cold as ice. Meghan shivered, and not because she was cold. She turned to see that Jane was at her table with her friends laughing and whispering, the usual. But there was something different this time.
Meghan turned back to Jonathon. "Don't listen to her." She pleaded. "You're my only friend and without you, I'll be pushed around again! 'Everyone needs at least one friend.' remember? You said that!" she exclaimed.
"Then I have some advice for you." He said, leaning in, his stare as cold as ever. "Grow a spine."
Meghan gulped. It was coming. The tears were hot as she tried to shake them away. But then came the part she was expecting, the humiliation. The whole cafeteria erupted into a sheer team of laughter. She looked around, everyone was staring, laughing, whispering. She grabbed her tray and tried to run for the trash cans, but a foot came out at the last second, Jane's foot. Meghan came crashing down onto her spaghetti. As she looked up, she saw Jane's face twisted up into a big laugh.
"Forget it." Meghan thought as she got up and ran to the doors and out the school. She didn't stop running until she was home.
