Chapter 4: Survival

"You must kill someone if you want to leave."

My mind and body went numb at the thought. My breathing was shaky, I was feeling light-headed too, I realize. The air went heavy, pressing my 180-pound body down. It took everything to stay upright.

But, as heavy as the air felt, all it took was sharp pierce words to break. 

Kyoko: So? What are you going to do now?

All of us turned to her, and she showed no signs of fear at all. In fact, she was remarkably calm.

Kyoko: Just stand around glaring at each other?

That edged comment was directed at everyone in the room. And because of that, I felt myself get pulled back to reality. 

Kiyotaka: R-Right... She's right! Sometimes, even if you're nervous or afraid, you just have to step forward! To forget such a simple fact... I can't forgive myself. I'm so ashamed! Please, someone hit me! I can't forgive myself! Somebody hit me! Punish me!

Apollo: Jeez, calm yourself down drama king.

Mondo: If you have time to yell about it, you have time to DO something about it.

Hifumi: Perhaps, but...what is the mission, exactly?

Leon: Idiot! To look for a way out, duh! 

Junko: And we totally need to find whoever was controlling that stupid bear and beat the hell out of 'em.

Chihiro: ...B-But before we do all that, maybe we should take a look at the handbook...

Apollo: Yea, she's right. If we're going to live here until we find a way to escape, might as well check the rules.

Celeste: True. If we stumble around with no clue what the rules are, something like that might happen again...

Mondo: Shit...

Junko: Fine. Then let's hurry up and check the stupid rules already.

Opening up the handbook, my name flashes in the screen. Like what Monokuma said, the owner's name of the handbook flashes up front and center. I wonder if this handbook is capable of having games in it, but I wouldn't get my hopes up. Then, from the main menu, I selected the School Regulations icon. 

There, an itemized list appeared on-screen. It was the school regulations. In other words, the rules being forced on us all. I then read through the list, one by one.

1. Students may reside only within the school. Leaving campus is an unacceptable use of time.
2. "Nighttime" is from 10 PM to 7 AM. Some areas are off-limits at night, so please exercise caution.
3. Sleeping anywhere other than the dormitory will be seen as sleeping in class and punished accordingly.
4. With minimal restrictions, you are free to explore Hope's Peak Academy at your discretion.
5. Violence against Headmaster Monokuma is strictly prohibited, as is destruction of surveillance cameras.
6. Anyone who kills a fellow student and becomes "blackened" will graduate, unless they are discovered.
7. Additional school regulations may be added as necessary.

Memorizing the rules into my brain, I raised my head up from the screen. Looking up, I could see stormy expressions on the rest of the students. 

Mondo: This is bullshit! What the hell kinda rules are these!? I'm not gonna let them control ME!

Celeste: Well then, why don't you wander around the school without a care in the world and see what happens? Personally, I would love to see what happens when someone breaks the rules.
