Chapter 5: The First Night

As Sayaka and I arrive at the Dining Hall, I realize that no one else was there yet.

Apollo: Huh. Looks like everyone's still searching around the place.

Sayaka: Yea, I guess so. Let's wait here.

Sitting down on the corner of the long table, Sayaka sits next to me.

Apollo: Man, I still can't believe what the hell's going on. We get invited to Hope's Peak, get imprisoned, our headmaster's a psychotic bear, and we're supposed to kill each other. Not what I expected for the first day of school.

Sayaka giggles at my statement, putting a smile on my face.

Sayaka: But, on the bright side, I get to meet you and Makoto again!

Apollo: Yea, that's a good thing too, I suppose. Every bad side will always have a good side, no matter how one-sided it may be.

Sayaka: Mhm. 

A silence emerges from the two of us, so breaking the awkwardness, I decided to ask her a question.

Apollo: Hey Sayaka?

Sayaka: Hmm?

Apollo: I wanna know something.

Sayaka: What is it?

Apollo: Well... Why would you remember some normal nobody like me?

Sayaka: Huh? What are you talking about?

Apollo: I don't have any Ultimate Talents, I have hobbies that are described as average and plain, I'm not a special person. But... you remember who I am, and I didn't even remember you going to the same middle school! How could I?

Sayaka: Don't say that! You ARE special, Apollo. 

Apollo: In what way? My talents, weak. My personality, average. My life, normal. What's so unique about me...?

I could feel Sayaka get closer to me, but I stopped myself from blushing. Well, that wouldn't last long, as her hands cups my cheeks.

Apollo: Sayaka, what are you...?

She then slaps me. It was light, but it shocked me.

Apollo: Ow! What was that for?

Sayaka: That's for being so negative. People may call you a plain, boring, and average, but to me... 

She takes a second to take a breath.

Sayaka: To me, you're special. 

Apollo: S-Special?

I repeated the word as if I'd never heard it before.

Sayaka: Don't you see it? Whenever I talk to you, my worries disappear. You treat me just like a good friend would. This whole time, people's treated me like someone higher than them, but you? You've made me feel more human, more loved. It's made me feel better than all this. And I just wanna say, you're amazing, Apollo!

I didn't know what to say. I was speechless.

Apollo: I-I... I'm not... Compared to all you Ultimates, I'm nothing. I'm a cat, walking into a pit of lions. 

Sayaka: You don't get it. You're more than just a nobody. You're caring, kind, loving even. Considerate, a good friend to talk to, funny, and most of all, you're willing to stand up for those who can't. You fought back against Mondo when he knocked Makoto out, you saved me from those bullies back then, you're amazing. I can't form it to words! You're the one that helped me find my courage again. Seeing you and Makoto for one, but with you talking to me like a long-time friend, that's made me feel warm inside.
