*one day later*
"Good job," Romanoff tells me, leaning against the counter and sipping her drink.
"You too, Romanoff." I grin. She extends a hand, her mouth quirking at the corner.
"Natasha."
"(Y/N)."
We're interrupted by Thor, who comes up behind me with a huge mug of beer.
"Agent Williams, correct?" he asks, and I smile.
"You can just call me (Y/N)," I say and nods.
"Very well, (Y/N), may I speak with you?"
"Yeah," I follow him out onto the balcony, looking over the city.
Most the others have gone off to wherever it is they go, but since I live and work in New York, as does Romanoff – Natasha, I remind myself – and Rogers, we're kind of sticking around. Thor's just waiting for the all-clear to take his brother back to Asgard, but I like having the big blonde guy around."What's up?" I ask, leaning against the railing.
"(Y/N), is it you?" he asks, and I frown.
"What do you mean?" I say, "Of course it's me!"
"Do you remember..." he hesitates, seeing my confused expression.
"What?"
"Nothing," he shakes his head, "nothing."
"No," I persist, "tell me."
"Really," he smiles, turning to go, "it's nothing."
That night, I lie awake in my room in the SHIELD compound, turning Thor's words over in my head. What the hell did he mean?
Sighing, I get up and grab my gear from the shelf, I don't think I'll be able to sleep and training always helps relax me.
I tip-toe down the corridors, careful not to make a sound.
"Did you see the way she looks at them?" a voice hisses to my left, through a door.
"Agent Williams a loyal agent." I recognise this voice as Director Fury, and I creep closer.
"She obviously knows the prisoner. They could be in league!"
I feel my cheeks heat up. Yes, Loki seems familiar, and Thor did too when I first met him, but I would never betray SHIELD.
"What you are proposing is ridiculous." Fury says, and I hear the scraping of a chair, followed by another.
"You heard what Thor said, she committed treason for this guy! She may be a loyal agent to you, but what if she decides to go back to him? What then? I'm just saying, she's dangerous. They're dangerous."
"And I said no."
Quickly, I dart around the corner, hiding behind a door as two people walk past me. I wait until I'm sure the coast is clear, then creep into the room where they were.
On the desk is an open file, a headshot of me in the corner along with all my details as an agent of SHIELD. Beside it, there's a file on Loki and one on Thor, with several lines of text circled or highlighted.
What the hell was that guy on about? I've done a lot of things that don't strictly align with the law, but I'm pretty sure I've never committed treason.
Footsteps sound in the hall again, and I jump. I have to get out of here. If there's someone who suspects me of being a traitor...
I shake my head, remembering the last agent who was thought to have been working for Hydra. And while having an allegiance to a prisoner or whatever they think I've done isn't the same, SHIELD don't like to take chances.
I press my back against the wall behind the door, praying that my beating heart will quiet down. The footsteps pass my room, receding down the hallway and I breathe a sigh of relief.
Carefully, I make my way back to my room and begin shoving my small collection of clothes, toiletries and weapons into a bag. I don't have much here, just what I need.
"(Y/N)," I jump at Natasha's voice, turning quickly around.
"Hi," I say.
"What are you doing?" She leans around me, eyeing the half-zipped bag.
"Felt like some fresh air, you know?" I laugh falsely.
"Right," she scans my room, picking up the empty drawers and shelves, "with all your stuff."
"Never hurts," I say weakly.
"Look," she sighs, "I came to warn you."
"Warn me?"
"Yeah," she looks around, then closes the door. "Some people in here think that you're a spy," she continues, and I bite my lip.
"I know," I confess, and she looks baffled.
"Then why didn't you get out?"
"I only found out a few minutes ago!" I protest, and she nods.
"I can cover up for you," she says.
"What? Natasha..."
"Save it," she crosses the room, zipping my bag the rest of the way and grabbing it, "we gotta go."
Dumbstruck, I follow her through the halls of the SHIELD complex until we reach the basement where my motorbike is parked.
"Oh," she says as I stand there, watching her shove my stuff under the seat, "you have a tracker."
"A what?"
"A tracker," she touches a spot on her forearm, where I got my ID implant, "right here. We all have them."
"Why..." I don't even bother.
"You'd better get going," she says, and I nod. I hug her quickly, whispering "thankyou" in her ear before pulling on my bike helmet and placing the key in the engine.
"Good luck," she calls softly after me, and I wave.
