let you go

20 2 2

I know I'll remember the flash of your smile
if we can't have forever then just stay a while
and I promise I'll let go

and I can almost imagine the taste of your lips
if I just raise my head you'll come down for a kiss
but I can't do this to my emotional heart
if I let it run free it'll tear me apart
and I still can't let you go

you're so different in person but somehow the same
I forgot how it feels when you whisper my name
I've never been this close to falling apart
always been so careful to close off my heart
but I still can't let you go

you've always been good to me—though I know you're bad for me
how can you be kind to me when you know I'm only sorry
I told you my mind disagreed with my heart
you said that was enough but we're falling apart
won't you please help me let go

waiting on you to change when the problem is me
I want to believe what you say we could be
I can't let you go without falling apart
I can't let you go, you've got half of my heart—

and I feel like a fool watching you cry I won't let you live and I can't let you die I won't tell you I love you in case it's a lie and I still can't let you go

they say to tell stories from beginning to end
but I'm stuck in the middle and won't try to pretend
that I know where it started—when I lost my heart
and I can't let it end without falling apart
so take it back to what we know

I know I'll remember the curve of your smile
if we can't have forever just stay for a while
and I'll never let you go
