The next day Colton and I sat in the parking lot waiting for Layla to come out of cheer leading practice so Colton could ask her to the dance. Colton was so nervous that he kept bouncing his leg and I was going to scream.
"Colton if you don't stop it right now I will chop your leg off!" I said getting really agitated.
"Fine then I'll just bounce the other one," he said back. After that he made his knee bouncing much more noticeable.
I glanced at the clock which now said 4:58. Two more minutes and the cheer leaders will come pouring out of those gym doors.
"Here," I said handing Colton an ear piece.
"What's this for," he asked.
"It'll help me listen in on the conversation and if you get stuck I'll tell you what to say. It'll come in handy I'm sure."
Colton took the ear piece and positioned it correctly in his ear. I put my ear piece in and attached a microphone to it so I could communicate with Colton. I turned my head towards the gym doors just in time to see the first few cheer leaders walk outside.
"Colton, it's time," I said all dramatically.
He rolled his eyes and nervously got out the car and jogged towards the gym doors. He stood by it and waited patiently for Layla to walk out.
"Hey Layla," Colton called when she walked out.
"Oh hey! Colton right?" she said.
"Yeah that's me. New and improved." I rolled my eyes at Colton's comment.
"Oh ok. Hey I heard you broke your arm. Are you alright?" She gestured towards his pink cast.
"Yeah I'm ok. I was playing football with a few buddies and we got carried away. Cracked a few ribs in the process," Colton smiled a lop-sided grin that could probably take any normal girls breath away. What can I say he learned from the best.
"Oh wow that sounds super dangerous!" Layla said in complete shock. I could tell Colton was eating this up. He had gained so much confidence he didn't really need my help. Yet.
"Yeah football can get pretty heated especially if you play with my group of friends. You know Michael right? Well he and I were playing with several other guys and you would not believe how competitive that boy is."
I listened to Colton droned on and on about that day. I tried my best to tune him out cause remembering that day truly scared me. I could have sworn he was dead when I looked at him laying on that football field unconscious. Just the thought of him no longer living in this world made me want to cry.
I guess I was just going to extremes like all girls do right? It also scared me that I cared this much for Colton and I wasn't sure why. Why should I give a fuck about this boy who had a hopeless dream that I am making come true? It was me who led him to fall deeper in love and who changed him to fit Layla's guy rubric.
And it was all because I cared and I still had no idea why.
"Alright Colton cut to that chase!" I half whispered half yelled into the microphone. He was taking to long and I wasn't to happy about the look of concern that was on Layla's face. She wasn't even there! She wasn't the one who sat with him for 2 hours in the emergency room!
Jeez I need to get a grip
"Anyways I'm ok but I also came to ask you something," suddenly all Colton's confidence seemed to melt away. I watched him rub his sweaty hands on his jeans and he started swaying back and forth.
"Breathe Colton, breathe," I whispered. "Don't lose her. You got this just ask her to go to the Winter Dance with you."
He nodded his head but he still didn't say anything. She probably thought he was a complete dummy.
"What did you want to ask me?" she started getting impatient.
"I was wondering if you would like to go to the Winter Dance with me," Colton rushed out.
A smile spread across Layla's face as she said, "Yes of course!"
I was expecting for me to let out a sigh of relief and that I would relax. Everything I've done so far has paid off. But I didn't. I tensed up even more when Layla said yes and I wanted to shove those words back down her throat.
"Wait did you say yes?" Colton asked bewildered.
"Of course," Layla said in a duh tone.
I was losing it. I'm falling apart. I have never wanted to tear someone apart as bad as Layla right now. Not even my brother. Or even my mom! How could I feel this way to someone whom I consider my friend. I'll have to consult with Candy. She'll know what's up with me.
I looked back at Colton who was laughing at some joke Layla had said that I didn't catch. I ripped my ear piece out and stared at Layla in disgust. I laid my head against the steering wheel and had the sudden urge to cry but I held back my tears like I always do and plastered a smile on my face like nothing's wrong.
When Colton got back in the car my smile faltered at the look in his eyes but he didn't catch it. He was to happy. He and I talked about what happened and I told him how excited I was for him.
The whole time my smile never reached my eyes but Colton never noticed because he was to in love with someone I now could not stand.
