"What is your ability exactly?"

"That is none of your business."

"Our prisoner has an unnatural fever. Your ability works with the mind only, yet you're the only one that's been down there."

"You're presenting me with facts, not a reason to tell you anything other than what you already know about me."

"I'm your partner."

The statement takes you by surprise as you and Akutagawa walk back down to the basement where the Port Mafia kept the enemies they needed to make talk. You raise an eyebrow at Akutagawa, crossing your arms against your chest with an eye roll. He doesn't stop walking, but he does glance behind you for a second before turning his back on you.

"You're only saying that out of convenience." You say before going to follow him down again.

"No, I'm just not an idiot. We need to know each other's strengths to be most efficient."

You knew he had a point, but a part of you only wanted him to say that he cared about knowing you as his partner, not just out of pure strategy.

"I'm not an idiot."

"You drank a lot at the boss' party for not being one. Besides, we've been partner's for a while for me not to know something about your ability."

"Chuuya drank a lot too."

"He's our executive. He can do whatever he wants, it doesn't affect me the way you do."

"What?"

His comment makes the both of you stop before reaching the bottom of the stairs, and a flare of embarrassed panic rises in Akutagawa's gaze from his wording. Without any hesitation he fixes his composure and responds, his voice monotone and without any hint of real feeling.

"It's our job to complement each other, I'm not going to risk a job flawlessly done."

There's a pause in what he says, and this time there is caution in his question, his demeanour stiffer.

"Do you even remember what happened at the party?"

You frown starts his question, trying to remember even the slightest detail about the later portion of the night.

"No" you admit, biting your lip in frustration.

"Good" Akutagawa nods with an odd sense of relief, the harshness in his voice back.

"So what was that affect your ability has?"

•••

You are frozen in his room, hands shaking as you force yourself to get close enough to use your ability. The only problem stopping you now, was the fact that you needed Akutagawa to talk to you to be able to use it on him. You need him to wake up, and you know that would be a gamble in its own.

Still, seeing him suffer in a sickly silence because of you was enough to rid you if any fear you had of facing him again. You recognized the symptoms, and with the amount of pressure you put on his mind by taking away memories and attempting to use your ability on him two nights ago, you knew that you were both flirting with death now.

He couldn't take it, and you couldn't either anymore.

You never did get around to explaining the affects of your ability to Akutagawa, and there weren't many who knew either, but sometimes when you created too much stress in a victim's mind, that stress in their brain turns it into sickness, and their whole body shuts down in an attempt to keep up with the mind and fight the collisions in the memory and control paths of the brain. Sometimes, it had that affect on you instead, but it rarely happened.
