Grinning, Lydia Aston made her way through the Hogwarts Express to find an empty compartment.
Students around her had already whipped out their wands and were dueling. Some were chatting while others were walking around in their Hogwarts robes.
She put her new wand (hazel with a phoenix tail feather, 14 inches) in the pocket of robes and dragged her trunk through the crowded aisles. There were not many empty compartments left and the Hogwarts Express had started trudging along on their journey to Hogwarts slowly.
She turned to the first compartment she saw which was occupied with three people: one boy with messy black hair and glasses, a tall, red-headed boy, and a girl with bushy brown hair.
She shyly knocked on the door and they all turned to look at her. The girl stood up and opened the sliding door. “Hello, my name’s Hermione Granger. What’s yours?” “I-I’m Lydia… Lydia Aston.” Lydia was slightly surprised at how brave the girl was in introducing herself. She’ll be in Gryffindor for sure, she thought.
“Come in.” Hermione grinned and moved so that Lydia could step inside. She dropped her trunk on the ground and sat next to Hermione.
The boy with black hair smiled at her. “I’m Harry.” She looked up at his forehead. “Harry Potter? Blimey, I can see your scar!” Lydia exclaimed. Harry beamed even more and laughed a little.
“I’m Ron Weasley.” Said the boy with red hair. “Nice to meet you…” Lydia started, cautiously. “But, you might want to watch out for my best friend, Draco Malfoy. His father sort of has it in for yours.” She dropped her voice so that he had to lean in to hear it and Ron grimaced slightly.
He started to say something, but suddenly, the door slid open and there stood Draco Malfoy himself. Speak of the devil, she thought. She could tell the others were thinking the same.
He smoothed back his white-blonde hair and looked at the others. “Dia, I see you’ve met Potter.” She smiled at his pet name for her and nodded.
Draco turned swiftly towards Harry. “How come you didn’t tell me who you were in Madame Malkin’s?” He asked. Harry just shrugged, looking flustered. “Oh well.” He moved over with his own type of swagger to sit down next to Lydia.
He looked up at Ron. “Oh, you must be-“He was cut off. “Yes, I know very well that I am a Weasley, thank you very much. Got a problem with that?” Ron said angrily. Draco looked like he was about to say something (most likely “Yes.”), but Lydia elbowed him. He yelped and massaged his ribcage. “Be nice for a change, Draco!” She hissed.
Hermione, Ron, and Harry all laughed. Draco blushed slightly and glared at Lydia, who smiled innocently back at him.
“Well,” Hermione started matter-of-factly after she had stopped giggling, “We need to change, we’re almost at Hogwarts.” She got up and left; so did Draco, Harry, and Ron. Lydia looked out the window next to her and for the first time, the compartment was surprisingly quiet.
She grinned again and looked out the window, sighing. This will be a good year, she thought, I’ve already made some friends. She kept beaming at her reflection in the mirror, regardless of the other students goggling at her. She just hoped that the (possible) separation of houses might not ruin her new-found (and old) friendship(s). But right now, Lydia didn’t exactly care.
