The rest of that day was a slight blur.
Lydia could have confirmed she was going to fail her Defense against the Dark Arts essay on cockatrices since she didn’t ask for any help from the others.
Her “friends” tried to apologize, but Lydia just shrugged them off and walked away and tried to act like nothing happened. Going from class to class by herself was quite lonely.
Other days past the same way, with her ignoring everybody. Her friends didn’t do anything but simply nod a hello at her (if that), but she didn’t do anything back. She knew that they were constantly talking about her from their several worried glances throughout the day.
By now a week had passed until one of them tried to talk to her. It was Ron. “You could at least try to act like I’m a likeable person.” He said angrily as he cornered her after flying lessons with the Ravenclaw’s.
“What are you talking about, Ron?” she said impatiently, but she was curious.
“Running off like that. I’m a human being, not something that you can downcast. Just because I’m not dating you, or something, doesn’t mean that every time someone teases us about being together you shy away from it! I would never want to be with a git like you anyways!” He glared, his ears red.
Lydia caught her breath and stuttered. “I-It’s not like that Ron, really, you are a likeable person-““Don’t say that after leaving me with my stupid brothers, Lydia!”
Her eyes dotted with tears that threatened to spill. “Ron, I don’t hate you, I just-““Stop.” He said. “I don’t care if you do or don’t. You were my best friend. But everybody makes mistakes, right? Some a lot more than others. You really should be in Slytherin.” He sneered and walked away without turning back to look at her.
Lydia erupted in tears and ran as quickly as she could down to her dormitory, where she pulled the curtains around her bed and cried.
Then, after what seemed like hours, the door opened.
“Lydia?” Asked a familiar voice.
“Go away, Pansy!” She said and wiped her eyes.
“You know I’m not going to.” Pansy crossed the room and yanked at the curtains, which caused them to reveal Lydia’s hunched and crying figure.
Pansy sat next to Lydia and wrapped her arms around her shoulders. “What’s wrong?” She asked, quietly and soothingly. Lydia immediately blubbered about the whole situation about being with Ron, and she could tell Pansy was listening to the whole thing. One thing was true about Slytherins, once you gained their trust, it was almost certain that you'd keep it forever. They'd help you with anything.
When her story was over, Pansy gave her a tissue. “It’s never too late to apologize.” She said after a long pause.
“Are you sure?” Lydia said, wiping her now-red eyes. Pansy nodded.
“Thanks a lot, Pansy!” She grabbed her wand and ran out of the door.
She looked around everywhere for the tower, but then remembered the Gryffindor’s had Transfiguration with the Slytherin’s.
She waited outside of it for a while until she saw Ron, Harry, and Hermione walk outside. She waited for them to walk past her, but then she whispered, “Engorgio!” Suddenly, Ron’s bag exploded with weight and his Transfiguration book grew as large as his whole bag.
She waited until Harry and Hermione left Ron to fix his bag, then darted out from behind the wall she was hiding from.
He looked up and opened his mouth, but Lydia cut him off before he could say anything. “I’m sorry! I’m sorry for offending you, and leaving you with Fred and George, and today when I hurt your feelings even more, and right now for exploding your bag, but it was the only way I would have been able too-“She stopped babbling by hearing Ron’s laughter.
“You think this is funny, do you?” She asked, affronted, and she could feel herself on the verge of tears again.
“No!” He said quickly. He grabbed his heavy Transfiguration book and put it underneath his arm. “I was going to apologize to you for today also. What I said was really harsh. You’re not a git, and you still are my best friend.” He said smiling, blushing slightly and looking at his feet.
At this, Lydia really did burst out into tears, to Ron’s surprise. “What, did I do something wrong?” He asked, worriedly.
She shook her head and hugged him crying all down his front and shaking. He dropped the Transfiguration book to the floor and hugged her back.
Suddenly, the door swung open and Professor McGonagall walked out. After her look of slight shock and Ron and Lydia breaking apart she said, “Well, it’s nice to see your friends again, but you have missed five minutes of Transfiguration. Please come in to class.” They nodded and gathered their stuff as Lydia wiped her eyes. Then they followed her back into the Transfiguration classroom and sat next to each other.
They turned to see Harry, Hermione, and Draco smiling at them.
Ron reached over with his other hand when they were reading the scripture from the Transfiguration book (which McGonagall had fixed back to normal, along with his broken bag) and held Lydia’s, which she happily squeezed back.
