Nice guy

Unfortunately, the date had to end. And that wasn't their choice, the waiter informed them that the coffee shop was going to close and they had to leave. They were surprised that it had been hours, for them it was almost like it had been 10 minutes. They got up and went outside after Jay paid for both of them. Sam proposed walking to the subway station together

"You go by subway?"

"Yeah, I don't have my dad around to drive me to places anymore so I'm getting used to the subway."

"What happened to your dad?" Jay asked worried.

"Oh right! I'm so stupid, I completely forgot to tell you why I moved back in the first place!" She walked to the subway station and Jay just followed, even though it was the opposite side of the bus station. "When we moved out because of dad's new job, my mom and I weren't really liking the town too much. Not only that but their fights only got worse. They ended up divorcing each other and made me choose who I wanted to stay with. I chose my mom because I knew she'd be moving back here but... I still miss my dad a lot"

"That sucks, I'm sorry... Divorce is always a really tough thing to go through"

"It's fine, it was for the better. They're both much calmer now..."

The good mood died a bit after talking about that sad topic. Jay tried to think of something to say but he didn't have the social skills Sam had, and Sam was stuck in her own head thinking.

They finally got to the subway station and stood in front of the front entrance to say goodbye.

"Rich" She held both his hands and smiled to him. "I had so much fun. Thanks for today, really. You've changed so much, I can't wait to get to know more of this new cool you"

"I had a lot of fun too, hearing you talk so much was surprisingly nice."

She chuckled a bit and shook her head. "Careful with that honesty, you're lucky I can take it."

"I- I don't know how to reply to that"

"You don't need to say anything. Goodbye!" She waved to the boy and walked inside.

Jay stood there thinking. Going over everything that had happened that day. Man, was he feeling conflicted with himself. He loved the time he spent with Sam but at the same time he knew it was a one time thing, and she thought he was Rich. Deep down he knew Rich would not listen to her like he did. And he didn't like thinking like a nice guy or a white knight, but it was a fact that Rich wasn't interested in girls that spoke too much. It's not that he was misogynistic or something and thought what girls said didn't matter, it's more that he didn't have any patience for anything.

I don't know if it was his morality or his dick talking but he thought that Rich didn't deserve Sam. She was incredibly nice and polite and even though she did talk and talk and talk, the way she spoke was entertaining. He was already crushing on her hard and just the thought of seeing his asshole best friend with that little angel made him roll his eyes.

He was cut off by his phone ringing. He picked up right away.

"I'm guessing the date went well?" Rich's playful but monotone voice was heard from the other side of the phone.

"How do you know it's over?"

"You ignored my messages until now, meaning you were pretty busy"

Jay could already see his friend's smirk in his head as he said that.

"We just ate and talked. Nothing much."

He started heading to the bus station while on the phone.

"Oh, I bet she was the one doing all the talking right? I'm right, aren't I? She just doesn't shut up"

"I didn't mind, she's actually really cool"

"Don't tell me you like her?"

"Well, a bit, honestly. And it's kinda sucky to be with her when she clearly likes you"

"Who wouldn't?"

Jay whispered to himself: "cocky bitch"

They both shared a laugh and continued their conversation.

"Can you come over tomorrow?"

"Hmmm... I think I'm free tomorrow so, sure"

"Nice. See ya"

"Bye"

When he got home, his head was full with thoughts of her. He almost felt pathetic by how much he liked her already. Either that or his brain didn't know how to react to a cute girl talking to him. Being realistic here, she was probably the first girl he talked to, face to face, ever since school ended.

As usual, as soon as he stepped inside his room, he threw his shoes to the side, grabbed his headphones and sat down in front of his computer. He started playing an online fighting game but he couldn't focus. Every battle he joined, he would be killed immediately. Tired of losing he gave up and went to bed.

He looked up at his ceiling and sighed. He really wanted a girlfriend...

He let his imagination roam free and drifted to a peaceful slumber.

It almost seemed impossible... But it was happening. Jay was sleeping BEFORE MIDNIGHT! One of his summer rules was to never go to sleep before midnight, for some reason he thought sleeping earlier than that was for pussies. And it would be fine if he only did this during schools breaks and holidays, but he did this nearly everyday of his life. Which didn't help with school because he would wake up at 7am, exhausted, and have to go to school with only 7 or 6 hours of sleep.

But oh well, his life, his rules.

The morning came and another miracle happened. He woke up on his own! And not only that, but also woke up in the morning!

He looked at his phone and noticed the time.

"10:25am"

He rubbed his eyes to see if he was seeing right.

"What the hell? It's way too early..."

He turned around and covered his face with the sheets so the sun wouldn't blind him. He was dedicated to fall back asleep and use the free time he had. But once he was awake and with his eyes open, there really wasn't anything that would make him sleepy again. He got up groaning and went to the bathroom to wash his tired face.

Another lazy day of summer had started
