Sam and Dean asked Castiel questions for hours on end, trying to trigger any memory of the Winchesters, of Heaven, of Metatron, and of being an angel, but they had no luck. Finally, they decided to ask him about what he did remember and what he thought his life was like.

"What are you doing in the area?" Sam asked.

"What do you care?" Cas asked.

"Just answer the question Cas, please," said Dean tiredly.

"First I have a question of my own. How the hell do you know me? Only my friends call me Cas and you're definitely not a friend."

Sam and Dean looked at each other.

"Let's stick to our questions, Castiel," said Sam.

Cas sighed.

"I go to school here. I'm a law student at Stanford... Full ride," Cas stated.

Sam sucked in a breath subconsciously and looked down, avoiding Dean's eyes on him.

"What?" Cas asked. "What's wrong with that?"

"Nothing," Dean said when Sam was silent. "Good for you."

Castiel scoffed. "You're a lunatic."

"What?"

"You kidnap me, knock me unconscious, interrogate me, and then congratulate me? What the hell dude? Please, just let me go. I promise I won't call the police or press charges. I just want to go home and get back to my life."

Sam signaled to Dean to talk. They both left the room, making sure there was no way for Castiel to escape.

"Well, what do we do now?" Asked Sam.

"I think we should let him be," said Dean quietly.

"Are you kidding? We have to find a way to reverse this and get him back to being an angel!"

"And what do we do in the meantime? Leave him tied up on lock-down? No, I won't do that Sam," stated Dean.

"We can't just leave him alone here in Stanford! Something could happen to him," exclaimed Sam.

"Well I never said anything about leaving him alone," said Dean quietly.

"What are you suggesting, Dean?"

"That, um, I stay here... with him."

"I don't know Dean. I mean, wouldn't it be better if we brought him along with us?"

"Sammy, let's be honest here, we've never really given Cas a chance to be happy. We've only ever thought about ourselves. Now this is the one time that he can start over and have a normal life! We can't just take that opportunity away from him."

"But Cas isn't himself right now! He doesn't have any real memories!"

"That's why, while I stay and look out for him to make sure no angels or demons try to kill him, you'll be trying to find something, anything, to get him back the way he was. You always were better at research," said Dean, thinking of the plan as he went along.

"I don't know..."

"Sam, this is the best we can do out of a bad situation."

"I just don't like the idea of us splitting up."

"Listen, if anything goes south, anything, I'll call you and we'll do it your way. Same goes if something gets out of hand on your side. Deal?"

Sam stopped a moment in hesitation.

"Okay, fine, we'll do it your way, but a deal's a deal; if anything happens-"

"I'll call you, I promise," said Dean. "The question now is what do we do about today and last night?"

"What do you mean?"

"We kidnapped him. He's not likely to forget that. If I'm going to be watching him to make sure he's safe, he's gonna notice me and call the cops."

"So... We get a spell to erase his memories from the past day," Sam suggested.

They did just that. Sam found a spell in Bobby's old book the boys kept in the trunk. Sam studied the spell while Dean got the supplies. They performed it and by the time it was over, Cas was knocked out giving Sam and Dean enough time to put him in his dorm room, which was information they received from the interrogation. Sam and Dean made a plan. They called up an old friend, making sure that Dean was going to be a law student, taking all the same classes as Castiel. He was going undercover and although nervous to find out what the new Castiel was going to be like, he had to admit he was a little excited. Dean had never gone to college. He never did have much luck in school; that was Sam, but he always thought college would be different. Law school wasn't exactly what he had in mind, but it was the closest thing Dean was ever going to get to normal.
