A flash of blue lightning came from the portal as one figure fell out. As the figure screeched to a stop, three others came flying out of the portal behind them into the sand. But as the first figure screeched to a stop, they tripped and skidded into a wooden pole and hit their head.
One of the figures stood up and tore off his mask to reveal a young human with buzzed brown hair and icy blue eyes. "Carrie?!" He turned the girl over and lifted her goggles off of her face. She was still breathing. He sat her up against the pole and looked her over.
He let out a sigh of relief. "Okay. You're good." He looked around at the other two who apparently were still out for now.
He slumped against the pole next to his friend. "You bought us through..." He let out a gasp as he suddenly began to pant. "Frickin time!"
The girl next to him stirred. "Mmhmm. I told you we could do it."
He chuckled, "We're just lucky you came back for us..."
Carrie's eyes slowly opened. "Yeah. I was not going to leave you behind... " Her eyebrows scrunched up, "What were we running from?"
The boy frowned, "Guessing you hit your head a bit hard..."
"Lenny... I am so tired..." She leans her head on his shoulder, sand stuck between several strands of her hair. She sat up suddenly with a worried look. "Colleen and Vincent?"
Lenny crawled over to the other two, ripped off their masks, and checked their pulses. "They are okay." He gently dragged them over so they were sitting upright against another pole, however as he was about to go back to Carrie, he heard a click and several sets of footfalls coming from behind him.
"Freeze!"
Lenny stopped moving. He knew how this worked. People with guns may mean business, but if these people really thought he was a threat, he'd be dead already. He slowly put his hands and turned around. He tried not to show any shock as he stared down the barrels of multiple guns being trained on him. There must have been thirty soldiers aiming their guns at him. "Listen guys... We don't want any trouble."
The mention of others must have made one of the soldiers nervous as he moved his gun to point it at Carrie and the others. Wrong move. Lenny formed an icicle with his hand and threw it at the guy, landing it in his left shoulder.
The sound of multiple clicks let him know that all eyes and guns were on him again. He gave them a sly smile and called back to Carrie, "Is it bad I missed this?"
Suddenly there was a rush of wind around him as all the guards were suddenly weaponless and Carrie was collapsing onto Lenny.
"Carrie!" He gently lowered her to the ground. "You aren't supposed to use your speed. You just brought us through time. You're going to wear yourself out."
He guessed the soldiers were conflicted about whether they should rush two vulnerable targets with obvious abilities, but then he heard a loud commanding voice coming from the back of the group.
"Excuse me, sir. Just who in the hell are you?" A Hispanic woman pushed through the crowd and stood in front of Lenny's crouching form. "And why are you..." She froze when she got a good look at the now unconscious girl in his lap. "Oh my god. Carrie!"
Lenny looked up at her and recognized her almost immediately. "Anna?!"
The general looked up at Lenny. "Who are you and what the hell did you do to Carrie?!" She pulled out her own gun and trained it on Lenny. "Get away from her!"
This just made Lenny hold Carrie closer. First, she was his best friend and the only person who tolerated him enough... Second, he couldn't tell Anna his name because she obviously didn't recognize him and that was obviously for the better.
"Please! She needs help..."
"Answer the damn question!""Rory!" Lenny said putting on his best fake-scared face. "Rory Frost! We came here from the past because we were in danger. Carrie took us through time but she drained herself. Please help us..." He had to admit, he hated begging like this, but as he had been aspiring for Broadway ever since high school it wasn't a horrible jest on his part.
Anna slowly lowered her gun. "She needs medical attention." She turned to the large timber wolf behind her. "Take her to the clinic. She'll need the energy."
Lenny, or Rory now, picked up his friend and followed the timber wolf after an obviously untrusting glare from the older wolf. He walked past Anna who also gave him a similar look. Okay, maybe his Oscar-worthy performance could have used some work, but they'd believe Carrie.
Just as long as the others went along with it. "Rory" stopped in his tracks and turned to Anna. "What are you going to do with the other two?"
"First I am getting them a doctor, then I will be transporting them to my office."
Rory nodded, "May I join?"
Anna narrowed her eyes at the newcomer, "I expect you to. You and Carrie will probably be done in time to meet the others."
"Others?" Rory raised an eyebrow. Did someone else survive?... Oh... Of course... The mightier than thou trio. "Oh?! I can't wait to see them..."
Yeah... He couldn't wait to see them at all.
