I opened my eyes and looked around trying to make sense of things. I know for sure that I passed out in science class. I know for sure that I got lots of stares from everyone in class, and I may never live it down. I also know, that I am definitely in school, but where? This isn’t the nurses office. Her office has light pink walls and a bathroom in the corner. This place has white walls and one door that has to lead out, other wise I am trapped.

I sit up to feel a pain in my head and hear my pulse practically rattle my brain. I walk to the door and peek out to see the nurse sitting in her chair at her desk. I guess I am in some side room that I never knew about. As I go to shut the door the nurse sees me and waves me out of the room.

“good you’re up, now I can check you for a concussion.” she says.

“did I really fall that hard?” I ask. I try to think back to being in the classroom but the pain in my head is too much and I easily give up.

“no you didn’t, it is just mandatory by the school rules, so come over here.” she said. Then she dragged me over to her desk.

While she performs a bunch of tests to check for a concussion, I sit there thinking back to when I passed out. Then a question comes into my head, but before I can get it out, she starts to talk.

“okay, so you look fine, no major damage. Looks like you can go back to class.” she smiled.

“okay, umm, what period is it?” I asked her.

She looks at the clock and gives me an answer. “we are in the middle of second period.”

Just as I thought. I would now have to walk in to my class, being the center of attention, and to top it off, Peter is in that class too.

“great. Thank you.” I say, and I start my walk to class after receiving my late pass.

When I finally make it to the classroom I have to force myself in. I try to walk straight to my teacher and ignore the stares. I can feel them creeping up behind me but I try to fight it as long as I can. Finally the temptation is too much and when he accepts the pass I turn to see all the faces in the room  fixated on me. I then rush to my seat and try not to make eye contact, but since I have to pass by Peter its nearly impossible.

Since he sits at the front of my row I have to walk past him and when  I do, I almost fall flat on my face. I catch myself and scurry into my seat. Just when I think the worst is over the teacher starts asking what happened and why I needed to go to the nurse.

“well, we were doing dissections in biology and I couldn’t handle it so I passed out.” I say, trying so hard not to blush.

“oh well, that couldn’t have been fun, are you okay?” he asked. I  could feel the stares thickening.

“yeah, I am fine now, my head just hurts a little but other than that nothing is wrong.” I said, hoping to end the conversation because now, even Peter is staring.

“okay, well we are taking some notes so if you could just open up your notebook and start to copy them down we will be all set.” he said, and then he got back to the lesson.

The worst was over and I could feel the faces turn as if I was flipping a switch for each and every one of them. I was able to make it through and that was an accomplishment in itself.

When the period was over I went to go hand in a worksheet I had missed at the beginning of the period and as I did Peter came up about a step behind me waiting to ask the teacher a question. As I turned around, I collided with him and all my books went everywhere.

“oh my gosh, I am so sorry.” he said, “here, let me help you pick them up.” then he reached down for the books, collecting them one by one. While they were picking up the books I was trying to gain control over my speech.

“thank you, and it was my fault I didn’t see you behind me.” I finally spit out.

“not a problem, I probably shouldn’t have been so close though. Now I know for next time.” he laughed.

“oh no, really it was my fault. I should watch where I’m going. I guess I am still a little dazed from this morning.” I laughed.

“right, yeah, well I need to get to class now and I hope you feel better then.” he said backing out of the classroom.

“right, uh, bye.” I said. Once he was gone I immediately went speechless. I couldn’t believe it. I just spoke to Peter Wolfe. Peter Wolfe! I couldn’t wait to tell Jennie.
