Meg scans the bookshelves in her den, her eyes scanning the shelf full of photo albums. She runs the tips of her fingers across the spines until she finds the last book in the line. She pulls it off the shelf before prancing back to the large white sofa against the wall where Anna is seated. Meg's fire orange hair spills over her shoulders as she settles down on the couch next to her girlfriend.
"You are really excited to show me this pictures, aren't you?" Anna grins at her as Meg opens the album in her lap.
"I'm telling you, I was a cute baby." Meg gushes, flipping through the pages to show off her chubby legs squeezed into white diapers.
"Don't flatter yourself." Anna laughs, pointing to a baby picture on one of the pages. "Why do you look constipated?"
"That's Josh." Meg responds, turning to the next page. She looks at a picture of her and her brother sitting on the outside porch swing. "Do you get along with Eli and Bethany?"
"Most of the time." Anna nods her head. "They kind of had to look up to me when our parents fought all the time."
"If they would've never divorced we wouldn't have ever met." Meg points out and then scoots closer to her. "You seem like a good sister though."
"I'd rather be a better girlfriend to you." Anna pecks her cheek before looking back down at the album. She laughs, pointing to one where Meg is naked on the beach. "Oh my God, what is happening here?"
"That is when I decided to be a stripper, apparently." Meg jokes as they continue to move throughout the book.
"I want to see a hospital picture." Anna tells her. "Where is the ugly hospital picture?"
Meg's jaw drops open. "Why do you think my hospital picture is ugly?"
Anna leans back into the couch. "Everyone's hospital baby picture is ugly. It's like, kind of a rule to look ugly in it."
"Well I will prove you wrong, Anna Adams." Meg hands her the other album as both of them start rooting through the pages to find the picture. Meg turns and turns, her eyes scanning all the pictures for any sort of picture of her in the hospital as a baby. Anna and Meg are both quiet, the only sound is the flipping of the pages of the album. Meg's eyebrows furrow together as she reaches the other cover of her album. "Any luck?"
"It must be in another one." Anna shuts her own book.
"The other ones are my parents' wedding and Josh's album." Meg folds her arms across her chest as she stares down at the last picture in the book. It's of Meg holding a stuffed polar bear and smiling brightly at the camera. She has to be a year old at least. This is the youngest she has ever seen herself in any of these albums. "This is weird."
"I agree." Anna crosses her legs. "Why aren't there pictures of you as a baby?"Xavier smacks his alarm clock when he hears the blaring coming from his bedside table. He yawns himself awake, sitting up in his king sized bed and letting his eyes adjust to the morning light gleaming in through the windows. He swings his legs over the side of his bed, catching a glimpse of his chipper smile in the dresser mirror. He has been in a good mood ever since Alice's party on Friday. He's still recovering from that epic kiss he shared with Landon and he often finds himself smacking his face to see if he'll wake up from this dream yet. But that's what makes this whole thing even better. It wasn't a dream. It was real. The guy Xavier has been madly in love with since forever has returned the feelings by kissing him. Life couldn't be better.
Xavier opens up the double doors to his closet before fetching a three quarter sleeved shirt and shorts. He always thanks God for letting him be so fortunate. His bedroom is almost the size of the den downstairs and his bed sits high on a platform with a few stairs leading up to it. His desk it a little too tidy but that's the way he likes things. Paintings of black birds hang throughout the room and there's a door leading out to the balcony. He even has his own bathroom. Xavier slides them on, running a comb through his hair before wandering out of his bedroom, nearly running into JC in the hallway. "Oh, sorry."
"You're good." JC is holding the short black dress she had worn the night of Alice's party in her arms. "I told you to remind me to wash this when we got home from Alice's the other night."
"Sorry, I forgot." Xavier awkwardly coughs, following her towards the stairs. After his kiss with Landon, they both parted ways before they could be caught. Xavier ended up going home and JC had returned about an hour later with the stain on her dress. "What happened to it?"
"I spilled red wine on it." JC answers and then does a double take at him. "Did you make up with Alice yet?"
Xavier scratches the back of his head as the two of them head down the stairs together. He isn't aware of what JC knows about his fight with Alice during the party. Anyone standing around could have heard what Alice said to Landon. "What do you know about that?"
"Nothing really." JC shrugs a shoulder. "Only that you threw a drink on her."
"We're fine." Xavier answers honestly. The morning after the party, Xavier called Alice and apologized for throwing the drink. Alice forgave him and apologized for doing what she did but Xavier told her the details about his kiss and how things are only going to get bright from here.
"Pop some toast while I go get this stain out?" JC looks at her step brother.
"Sure." Xavier nods, turning into the kitchen as they separate. He walks over to the bread drawer, pulling out a loaf and setting it on the counter. He reaches for the toaster as the door behind him opens and closes. Xavier turns around, butterflies twirling around in his stomach when he locks eyes with Landon. They haven't spoken since their kiss. They haven't even SEEN each other. Staring at him almost brings Xavier back to the walkway in front of Alice's house. "Landon."
"Hey, JC told me I could walk on in." Landon gently shuts the door behind him.
"Yeah, come in." Xavier quickly nods his head and the two of them fall silent for a quick minute before Xavier speaks up again. "So how are you?"
"We can't tell anyone." Landon says at the same time. Landon clears his throat. "Sorry."
"Can't tell anyone?" Xavier's eyebrow furrows.
"About the other night at the party." He explains. "I'm still with your sister and everything."
Xavier turns his back to Landon so he's facing the toaster again. Shit. Xavier didn't even think about JC still being part of the equation. Not once. He kind of figured that he and Landon would start a fairy tale romance and live happily ever after or something. He didn't even think about JC. "Oh, of course."
"I'm going to go look for JC." He says to Xavier, padding out of the kitchen. Xavier remains where he is, watching the toast burn in front of him. He lets it, a little pissed at Landon. He thought that the kiss they had was the beginning. He thought they would have something after this but JC is still in the way- which makes him not even feel bad about burning her toast.
