"It's prom, you guys." She hears one of her best friends Tabby Miles say. "The two of you can't go walking around hating each other."
"I don't hate him." Israel Sepulveda's voice chimes in. "HE hates ME."
"Because you ripped my heart out." She can tell Case Mercy's jaw is clenched as he says this.
"I've apologized, Case." Israel says back. "I don't know what else you want me to do when you don't forgive me."
She moves her hands over the soft blanket covering her body.
"It's a little hard to do after what you did." Case shoots back.
She feels her leg twitch but she doesn't open her eyes.
"Case, it's not Israel's fault." Tabby speaks up to try and keep the peace. "He was obviously confused on who he was for a while but now since he knows the truth, shouldn't you be happy for him?"
She clears her throat a little but doesn't speak. The repetitive sound of the beeping machines next to her fill her ears along with her friends' bickering.
"You know what, Tabby?" Case says back. "Be careful with Carlos. Clearly love isn't real and it never has been so why don't we all take this information and put it in our back pockets because I'm sure it'll save us from loads of heartbreak down the road."
She remembers how she got here. She remembers watching the lightning and hearing the thunder from outside of her dad's car.
"Love is real." Israel argues.
She remembers hearing her dad yell at her and her dad's girlfriend's daughter. She remembers the pouring rain, the beach to their right.
"You don't need to take my advice." Case shoots back. "Because you're the one who did the hurting. You put me here."
Anna Adams' head races as her eyes open from her hospital bed. Case and Israel are arguing at the foot of the bed, Tabby standing between them to try and keep things from getting physical. The three of them continue arguing about the boys breaking up and as much as Anna tries to gather pieces of what happened to their relationship, her mind takes her back to the accident that put her in this place. She remembers the car flipping and hearing her dad and Meg both scream at the top of their lungs. She remembers crying out herself. After that, she knows nothing. Did Tabby just say something about prom? She remembers that during the hurricane, there were WEEKS left until the big dance. Has she been out for that long? Anna sits up in her bed, her head a little foggy. Her red hair is down her shoulders and her mouth has a bad taste in it. Her friends look the same- although not as happy as they did before the storm hit. "Can you guys please just shut up?"
Tabby and the boys all whip their heads around to look at Anna in the bed. Tabby's eyes grow as big as baseballs and they fall quiet. "Anna... you're awake."
"Yeah, I'm awake." Anna looks at her friends. This is not how things were at the beginning of the year. They were all happy and carefree on her back patio just before senior year started. Now they're arguing and filled with hate? "I see you two broke up."
"He's not even gay." Case folds his arms over his chest. Israel shrugs helplessly.
"Do you remember what happened?" Tabby rushes to the side of Anna's bed. "Do you remember the accident?"
"Yeah, I remember everything." Anna rubs her temples to attempt to get this headache to leave. "I remember my dad finding me and Meg together, I remember the storm, the crash. I remember everything."
"That's great." Israel joins Tabby's side while Case stands on the other side of the bed. "Should we get a doctor or something?"
"Probably." Anna glances at the closed door but looks at her friends. She wants to get a few answers before they start rushing in with tests and calling her parents to tell them she's awake from the coma. She needs to know where Meg is. "Meg. Where is she?"
Case glances at Tabby and Israel. "She uh, left. Natalie took her back to Chicago after the hurricane."
Anna doesn't move. She should've known something like this would happen. Why wouldn't they stay? Why would Natalie and Mr. Adams continue hating on Anna and Meg's relationship? Wouldn't after seeing Anna in this condition put things in perspective? Life is too short. Why spend the time all ass hurt about a relationship their kids are having together? "And she hasn't come back?"
"No." Tabby shakes her head. Her brown eyes look calm and relaxed, unlike Case's who are ready to pop out from anger. "But she told us to let her know when you woke up so that she can try to hop on the next flight out here."
"And it's prom?" Anna asks them after a minute of picturing her and Meg running to each other at the airport. They all three nod their heads. "I'm not going."
"What? You have to." Tabby tugs on her arm. "We've been looking forward to this summer."
"The only person I want to go with is still in Chicago and won't make it back by tomorrow." Anna glances at the calendar on the wall. Prom always falls onto May 23rd- which is tomorrow. "I'd rather just recover from this hell I was in."
"You can go with me?" Case offers. "We'll have fun, trust me."
Anna thinks about it. She really was looking forward to prom but after everything that happened, she's not feeling too up for it anymore. She'd rather sit here in this hospital room and think about Meg rather than have to show up at the school for a dance. "I don't know..."
"Well I'm not taking no for an answer." Case smiles weakly. He probably needs this date more than Anna does. "We'll need to find you a dress."
