I'm excited, and I have a weird thing where I hate starting chapters without having a little note before them, sorry

Thomas POV
I tied my shoes quickly, excited to get outside with my friends Joan and Talyn.  It's been a long day of lessons and a child of my age hates sitting through those lessons.

"Put your jacket on!"  Mother screeched from the sitting room. "You'll catch your death out there!"

"Yes Mother!"  I yelled back, grabbing my jacket from the maids hands.

"And you better not be playing with those bastard children from the city!"  She continued to yell at me.

"I'm not Mother!"  I lied before running out of the house.

I pounding down the stairs and past all the extensive gardeners around my house.  I'm only eleven years old yet I know every way to sneak out of this house and into the woods.

The edge of the woods were so close, but also extremely forbidden.  So of course, that's where all the children in town play.  I ran past all the perfectly manicured gardens and into the large overgrown forest.

Joan and Talyn were waiting for me a few feet into the forest.  Joan leaning against the tree trunk and Talyn up in the tree.

"Hey Thomas,"  Joan called.  They smiled upon seeing me.

"Hello,"  I responded, unable to keep the well raised rich boy out of me.  The two smirked and laughed at me, making me sigh.

"You're late,"  Talyn told me, jumping down from the tree.

"I'm on time enough,"  I argued.

"Well, since you wasted our time,"  Joan said, tapping me on the arm.  "Tag, you're it."

"What?!"  I yelled while Talyn and Joan took off into the woods.

I sighed and kicked my shoe against the tree root.  It scuffed almost instantaneously.  Mother will have my arse for this, if she doesn't send Father after me first.

After debating destroying the shoe and lying about loosing it, I finally just decided to run after them.  I was panting within seconds of running.

I ran through the woods, trying it keep my eyes on the two dark shapes weaving between the trees ahead of me.

We neared the river that had no bridge. Just an old tree that an across it. I reached the bank of the river right as Joan and Talyn running across the fallen tree.

But I watching where I was running and ending up tripping on a rock that I could've wasn't there before. The ground came rushing up to my face.

I cried out as the rocks scraped my knees and hands. I laid for a few seconds on my side, staring at the ground. I look at my scrapped palms to see blood welling there.

My trousers were ripped at my knees, barely covering the deep, bloody scratches. I grimaced in pain and tried to wipe the blood from my hands.

I picked the book up and held it gingerly. It was a dark green book with gold accents. I traced my fingers over the title of the book.

There was no author listed anywhere on the cover of the book. I opened the book, accidentally getting some of my blood in the first page.
