When school started after Thanksgiving, we heard back from the lawyers. No one told us if the defendants were planning on pleading guilty or not guilty, just that they're ready to bring the case to court, and the court date is set for March 16th, 2020. Okay, so they want to wait until my spring break to do this? Whatever. December 2nd was the following Monday after Thanksgiving, and I had told my friends that the court date was scheduled for March 16th. "Do you think it will be open?" "What do you mean?" "Like, anyone can go to trial, unless the judge closes the proceeding for some legal purpose." "I don't know" "I'll be there muchachas, my cousin is a defendant." "Right, sorry if we're rubbing it in Javier." Kate says. "Look, it's no big deal, I've come to terms with it." "Well, we're still here for you." Kate assures him.
"Javier, did you get to talk to Antonio?" "I haven't gotten to visit him, so no, but we're going to go visit him on Saturday." "Let me guess, you want to know the story before it goes to court." "Yes, but only because Allen died back in the beginning of August, and now it's December. Plus, it'll be easier for me to sleep at night." "Oh Sydney, you're sleep deprived over all of this?" "Yeah, but I can't help it. Also the thought that Rebecca has something to do with Allen's death." "I can ask Antonio about that muchacha." Javier adds. "That would be great." Kate put one arm around me and smiled. "Allen wouldn't want you to be stressed out like this." She says. "Yeah I know, but it's hard to just live life normally without him." "March might seem like it's far away, but it'll come sooner than you think." "Thanks Javier." The bell rang, telling us to head to class. "That's our cue, see you later Javier." "See you." We headed towards first hour while Javier headed the other way.
Finals are in a few weeks, and the end of this semester couldn't come sooner. I know that the next two weeks are nothing but studying. This is another reason why I'm so sleep deprived, I want to ace these exams. If I want to get into a good college, I need to really make my grades shine. My family has always told me that junior year is the most important year and I think they're right. Allen was accepted into Stanford after having a GPA of 4.0 his junior year. Not that it was a surprise to my parents or me that Allen did so great in school, but his GPA never dropped below a 3.2 and was as high as 4.0. The boy had three cords during his high school graduation. Allen didn't seem to stress out over his grades and if he did, he was really good at hiding it, probably to prevent me from noticing. Allen had a lot of certificates and even had a medal for his academic achievement. Allen rarely even got sick. An occasional case of the flu or some other virus here and there but his attendance every year was always amazing. He had a few perfect attendance awards. The weekend couldn't come soon enough. I slept in well on Saturday. In fact, when I woke up, Javier had texted me saying Antonio got arrested for driving Rebecca away during the scene of the crash to save her from being a suspect in Allen's case.
