Tori lives in an apartment in Old Gotham. A place known for being the location of the Gotham City Police Department. It took me a grand total of two hours by bus to get from my apartment in East End to her's in Old Gotham. She does not live that far from the GCPD but she does not live that close either. I would say she lives three blocks away. Old Gotham is probably the first part of Gotham that was built, later it was surrounded by the rest.
I looked at my phone, it was 3:00. Tori should be getting here in the next thirty minutes. I sat on the steps in front of the apartment building. I prayed Tori's mother wouldn't be home any time soon, she doesn't approve of me or my influence on Tori. I took the note out of my pock and read it over.
That was a close call, I advise you not to get involved.
Clearly, I have ticked someone off. I read the note over again. I thought that I would maybe be able to recognize the handwriting. No such luck. I tucked the note away and looked up at the sky.
I closed my eyes. It was a really nice day, warm, the kind of warmth that instantly made you smile. I thought of my mother and the way she would bake me cookies (even if those cookies were just to make herself feel better for sneaking out the house almost every night) and how she use to rub my hair when I got frustrated at my homework, or how she was there when I got arrested at age 13 for trespassing. How she did not yell or scream, she payed my bail, took me home, and hugged me goodnight. She told me she did not want me to turn out like her, that she was sorry. I miss her.
I opened my eyes. I felt tears forming and running down my face. I miss her so much.
BBUUZZZZZ. My phone went off in my pocket. I pulled it out.
"Crap," I said a loud. I had forgot I had to work today. "Hello?" I said into the receiver.
"Hello? Skyler?" My boss said back. "Where are you? You're late!"
"I know," *cough* "I am sick, I think I caught the flu." *cough* "I won't be able to come in for the rest of the week, I think." *sniffle*
"You seemed fine yesterday," my boss said. She wasn't buying my act at all.
"I'm sorry, I honestly forgot. I have been going through a lot." I confessed.
"Only this once Skyler," she said. "Be safe."
"Thank you!" I hung up the phone. I wiped my face from my earlier thoughts and mentally scolded myself for forgetting work. This job is super important. I need the money so badly.
"Skyler!"
I looked up to see Tori walking towards me. Her real name is Victoria but she goes by Tori. Tori is normal height. Depending on your definition of normal height. To me that is about 5'5. She is around that height maybe an inch taller or shorter, but not exact, no one is ever exact, that would be weird. She is a Spanish girl, whose family immigrated from Spain two generations ago. Her family speaks Spanish in the house to uphold their culture, a rule that was extended to me when I started visiting her. I would say that I'm pretty good at Spanish, but I am no where close to fluent at all. She has mid-back length brown hair that has loose curls. She also has light brown eyes.
As she approaches me, she wears a long read coat, with a black scarf, and jeans. "How long have you been sitting on my front steps?" She asked when she caught up with me.
"I don't know, maybe thirty minutes," I said standing up, "but I have something to show you."
"Okay," She walked around me and unlocked the door to the building. We walked up the stairs and to her apartment. She unlocked the door and we walked in. To my luck her mother was already home. She must not have worked today. "Buenas tardes Victoria , recuerde decirle a su papá cuando llega a casa sobre-" She stopped when she saw me, she did not look happy, but she did not also look angry. "Buenas tardes Syler."
"Buenas tardes señora Banderas," I said following Tori into her room. "She does not seem to hate me anymore." I said once we entered her room.
"I guess she got use to you."
"This is what I wanted to show you," I said pulling out the paper. I unfolded it and handed it to her. She looked it over and when she was content she handed it back.
"Who gave it to you?"
"I don't know," I answered sitting on the floor, "I was preoccupied."
"What were you doing?"
"Following a man through a abandoned building." She looked at me as if I was insane. "What? You know this is what I do, why are you surprised?"
"I told you, you cannot do things like that by yourself. You might get killed!" She yelled sitting at her desk.
"And if you were with me, you would have died too."
"Well at least you wouldn't die alone."
"That makes no sense at all Tori."
Tori shrugged. "Well, where were you when you received this letter?"
"Hiding."
"So, you have nothing to work with?"
"No."
Tori shook her head. "Well the handwriting is nice. Do we know anyone who writes like this?"
"I don't know anyone who writes like that." I looked down at the paper again.
That was a close call, I advise you not to get involved.
"Maybe its the Batman telling you to stay out of his way," she offered in a mocking tone. I gave her a look of annoyance. "Hey I could be right. We do live in Gotham. It could be anyone of those Bats really. Isn't there like four of them, maybe more?"
I took a deep breath. Why would any of the Bats deem this a worthy case? "Or maybe it could be the guy giving up looking for me because he had better things to do than chase around a nosy teenager."
"You're no fun!" Tori swirled around in her chair and turned on her computer. "Are you staying for dinner?"
"If I'm allowed."
"¡Mamá! ¿Puede Skyler quedarse a cenar?" Tori yelled into the kitchen.
"Sí," her mother yelled back.
"I guess you can stay for dinner," Tori said walking back to her bed.
"I went to GCPD after you left last night."
"And?"
"And, I gave them my evidence."
"What did they give you?"
"They told me thanks."
"That's it?"
"Yeah."
"Is that why you followed a lunatic into a building?"
"Yes."
"And this is why you wasn't at school?"
"Yes."
"Next time tell me."
"Okay."
"Tomorrow night though, we're going out," Tori announced.
