The Gotham City Police Department; led by Commissioner Jim Gordon, was always been ridden with corruption. It did not matter if you were the highest ranking or lowest ranking officer, you could become tainted. Many officers have been involved in crimes ranging from bribery to murder. Well, what would you expect from a city where organized crime is as common as the sun rising.
I walked up the steps into the Gotham City Police Department headquarters. I have not been here in a long time. I had worked with (more like volunteer, if you count bugging them with every case I deemed worthy of police attention) the homicide division for a couple months. However, after a case turned bad with a certain police woman who was suppose to be helping me named Rebecca Mulcahey. I no longer have a such close knit relationship with the Gotham City Police Department.
I walked through the doors, having to dodge a rushing cop almost smack dead into me. I walked up to the receptionists desk. The officer at the desk was on the phone, he was having a very frantic conversation with who was on the receiving end. I felt bad for that person, the officer sounded very angry.
After three minutes of impatiently waiting, he finally hung up. "What can I help you with?" he asked, rubbing the anger off his face. This officer must be new, I have not seen him before. He was pretty young, probably new to the force and probably angry that he was stuck as a receptionist. He had dark brown hair and dark brown eyes with caramel skin and a decent build. He also looked so bored, that he would fall asleep if I did not answer him soon.
"Um...is Lieutenant Hennelly here?" I asked looking around at the officers doing their routines. Lieutenant Gerard Hennelly is the head of GCPD's Quick Response Team, and I am in the need of a quick response.
"Don't you think its kind of late for you to be out?" he asked, not answering my question. "Its 9:52, don't you have school tomorrow?" It really bothers me when adults patronize me. I'm almost legal! Why don't they treat me as such?
"Is Lieutenant Hennelly here or not?" I asked trying to keep my blood pressure down.
"No, he is not, he is working on a case," he said noticing my irritation.
"Okay," I said turning around and walking away from the desk. I turn to see if he was looking away. He was. I dipped to the side, around some laughing officers and made my way toward one of the offices.
I opened the door of the first office that was unlocked. The tag on the door read Police Lieutenant Cornwell. I ducked into the office and closed the door behind me. I was brought to attention by a man sitting at the desk. "Can I help you young lady?" Lieutenant Cornwell asked with a questioning look on his face.
"I was looking for Lieutenant Hennelly, from the homicide division," I answered leaning against the door. I was uncomfortable in this office with a stranger.
"Don't be afraid, sit down," Cornwell said motioning for the chair in front of his desk. I sat down. "Hennelly is not here at the moment."
"I know, the cop at the front desk told me that already," I added slumping into the chair. I am starting to think that coming down here was an absolute waste of time.
"Then why are you here?" he asked, "If you wanna talk to someone from homicide, Lieutenant Bilbao is here. Or there are a number of officers that can talk to you if you need someone to talk to."
"I want to talk to Hennelly," I said plainly. I thought over my options in this situation. I was not going to be allowed to talk to anyone I want to talk to. I decided to go ahead and tell the truth, see how far that gets me. "You know that building that burned down in East End last night?"
"Yes, I am aware," Cornwell said showing interest. He picked of his mug and took a sip of his coffee. I eyed the bagel on his desk, I instantly grew aware that I had not ate dinner that night. My stomach growled and Cornwell heard. "You can have that if you want." I grabbed at the bagel. "Your name is Skyler right? I seen you around before. Many guys in homicide have worked with you. I have heard your name mentioned before." He took another sip from his mug. This bagel is really good. "What do you know about the fire?"
"Yeah well I don't really talk to people from major crimes, you guys kind of have a reputation."
"Oh come on," he said laughing, "We are not all bad."
"I live across the street from where the fire was," I said pulling out my phone, "I was looking at the rubble and saw some interesting things." I scrolled through my pictures and showed Cornwell each one.
He took my phone at downloaded the pictures to his computer. I took the opportunity to look around his office. He had a water cooler in the corner next to a plant by the door. There was a bookcase along the wall filled with files and binders. Hanging on the wall near the bookcase was his degree in criminal justice in a frame. There was a trash can next to his desk. On his desk was many papers, pens, and a filing basket. He also had his computer and his coffee. I looked at the empty chair next to me it was a plain wooden chair.
When Lieutenant Cornwell was done with my phone he handed it back to me. "Thank you for these pictures I will pass them on," he said looking at them closer on the larger screen.
"Is that it?" I asked clearly confused.
"Of course," he said confused also, "You did not expect for you to get a badge for get some kind of award did you?"
I rolled my eyes, got up and left the office. Honestly, I was expecting something else. Some kind of recognition. I left the building and made my way back to my apartment for a well earned sleep.
