Ashes

Just as agreed, Tori met me at my apartment at sunset. It was a beautiful sunset with many pretty sunset colors. I was going to bore you with some deep thoughts and revaltions, maybe even throw in a good transfiguration (rhyming maybe?) but I will save that for later.

I was sitting in the middle of my living room floor reading the book we were assigned in our English class. It was boring, and the details are not neccessary. I was a little tired from working after school and I was not prepared for Tori's impromptu crash through my window. Well she did not crash through it, but that's what it seemed like.

Knock, knock. I jumped and turned towards the window. Tori was peering through it, all smug because she knew she scared me. She takes pride in scarring me, it does not happen very often.

I stood up and threw the book onto the floor. I walked over unlocked the window and pushed it open. I walked over to where I was sitting as Tori let herself in. She was, of course, dressed in all black with make up to match. She also wore a look of irritation, probably because I was not wearing the agreed upon color. I was still in my work uniform.

"So, what are you doing?" Tori asked giving me that condescending mother look.

"Homework," I said nonchalantly walking into my bedroom.

"Well Sky, you are suppose to be in black. And not to mention we agreed on a time. I don't care if you had to work or homework. My mother will kill me if I'm not home by curfew!" She yelled from the living room, probably earning me complaints from the neighbors in the process.

"Calm your tits, I'm getting dressed," I responded pulling a black turtleneck over my tank top. I also put on black jeans and hiking boots. I grabbed my mother's pendent and put it around my neck, I might need some luck tonight.

I walked out of my bedroom and went through the window with Tori following close behind.

We went down the fire escape and crossed the street to the burned building, or what used to be a building. Now its just ashes. Tori walked over to something I guessed she found interesting looked at it for a few moments and then kicked it over. I guess it wasn't of any value.

I walked over to the side of the ash filled lot with the remains of a burned wall. What was left of the wall was brick with a few wires falling around itself. "Tori," I called over.

"Quiet, Sky remember we are not suppose to be here," she said looking around fearfully. Her mother recently found out how she spends her afternoons and has been on her case about it. Tori probably had to lie about where she is. I smiled at her, wishing my mother was around to dote on me.

I pointed to the wires and we followed the trail it left. We were led to a electricity box that was opened and clearly tampered with. "So, I guess we know what started the fire?" She asked.

"Yeah," I said looking a bit dissapointed. I looked up at the sky, it had grown dark since we first started and I was hoping that we would find something a little more interesting. I was not in the mood to sit in my dark apartment alone, staring at a lot where people use to spend their seemingly happy lives.

I looked down and back up at Tori. "Yeah," I repeated, "I guess we are done here."

"Looks like it," she said unconvinced. She pulled her phone out and looked at the time, it was almost 8.

"Hey, I'm gonna get home before my mom realizes she was lied to, see you tomorow?"

"Yeah, bye." I waved as she ran off to the nearest bus stop. I stood there in the dark and looked at the electric box. Who would have done this?

I heard a snap, I looked around making sure no one was there. I returned to my thinking convinced that it was the ashes settling. But I had the feeling that I was being watched. I knew I was being watched.

I stood there for a bit longer. I wanted to 1) irritate whoever had the nerve to think I was dumb enough not to hear then walk to unsettled building ruin and 2) let them know that I was a threat. I know it was dumb, making enemies is not something you want in Gotham, but I couldn't help myself.

I took out my phone to take a picture of the box. I made up my mind to go down to the police station. Maybe they will listen.

I heard another crack. I turned around ready to attack if needed, but I didn't see anyone. I looked all around making sure I wouldn't be seen when I left. When I was convinced that everything was good, I made my way to the GCPD headquaters.

Gotham City Police Department or otherwise known as GCPD is the police department of Gotham. Its located in the downtown area, in the mist of the inner city. Surrounded by the crime it tries to alleviate or in some cases the crime it helps cause. The GCPD is not the saint they hope to portray, its far from that actually. But, there is always  someone in the building who is really willing to help.

When I was 14, when I first started my journey on my own. My mother had been gone for about 2 weeks. She was called away on some kind of service, never was allowed to know the details of what she does, but she always let me know that when she sneaked out during the night or when she would be gone days at a time, that everything she ever done. All the people she may have directly or indirectly hurt, was all to keep me safe.

I had met a nice police man who was the father of a girl who use to hang out with Tori and I. Her name was Monica her father's name was Luke Brown. Officer Brown. Monica was another victim of Gotham, taken away from us during our sophomore year, we were on a field trip when those  masked goons attacked us. Some of the cop kids were held as ransom, and many were killed.

So anyway, Officer Brown, I hung around his daughter and he could tell something was not right. Maybe it was the way I acted, always worried about food or money, how I was going to get home that night. I needed a job and fast.

He gave me a ride home one night, I had to tell him that my mother was sick and could not pick me up.

"Where is your mother?" he asked looking up at the apartment. All the lights were off. I mentally scolded myself for forgetting.

"She is upstairs?" I said shrugging off his inquiry.

"I do not see her car and all the lights were off," he pressed, "is she actually here?"

        "No,"

"Does she leave you here alone often?"

        "No,"

        "Are you lying?"

"No." At this point I was getting nervous that he was going to figure it out, and I guess my body language was not helping the situation.

"How long has she been gone?"

"Not long, I don't know. Why are you asking me all this?" I asked getting irritated at his prying.

"Get back in the car," he said opening the passenger side of the door, "I'm going to take to to the department."

I got in the car and he drove along the street toward the GCPD. I looked out the window not sure that I want to trust the police. "Why are you doing this?" I asked.

"Its to dangerous a city for a young girl to live in alone," he replied.

That was then and this is now. Obviously his good intentions were heard by deaf ears. I am still alone I this city even though it is not at all his fault. My choices put me in the place I am now, I am the only one to blame.

Officer Brown had since resigned from the service. He moved upstate with his wife to raise their youngest child in a safer environment. Which would be any other city than this one.

I walked up the steps of the GCPD headquarters unsure how I was going to handle the situation, but I never go anywhere without a plan.
