Dylan's POV

I walked into my trailer after a full day of filming. I sat on the couch and opened my phone, ready to distract myself with social media but I got sidetracked when I saw I had a missed call from Y/N.

She never left me messages unless it was something serious. I clicked on the voicemail, worried something happened. The second the message started, there was a weird rustling sound, almost like her phone was in her purse or pocket.

I heard Y/N take a shaky breath as a guy started talking to her. I instantly recognized the voice as her older brother, Y/B/N. As I listened to the message, I soon realized I wasn't supposed to hear this conversation.

"Come on, Y/N. Give me one good reason why you won't."

"I can't," she stuttered. "If I did. . . It would ruin everything."

"You don't know that, kiddo. He could feel the same way."

He? Y/N has a crush on someone? Why wouldn't she tell me?

"I. . . I can't."

"Y/N, I know opening up to someone is scary. Before I started dating Ann, I was terrified to ask her out. And now, we're married and expecting a baby."

"That's great, Y/B/N, but things are different between me and Dylan. If I told him. . . I could lose him."

My heart jumped into my throat when she said my name. I was the guy she had a crush on?

"You're gonna lose him if you keep pushing him away, Y/N."

I thought about it for a second. She hasn't been answering my calls, she takes forever to respond to a text and suddenly started coming up with excuses whenever I called to try and hang out.

Maybe she was trying to push me away.

I snapped back to Y/N and her brother when I heard him sigh. "You and Dylan have been best friends since you were little. You could never lose him. Dylan is the only person you've ever opened up to, other than me, but you gotta open all the way."

"It's scary," she stuttered. "What if he. . . What if he doesn't feel the same way? What if I tell him how I feel and he rejects me? Sure, it could end well and we could be happy together but. . . What if it doesn't end well? I could lose him and I. . . I can't lose him, Y/B/N."

"You're not going to lose him by telling him by telling him how you feel, Y/N."

I waited for Y/N to respond but she didn't. Instead, I heard her brother sigh before saying, "Y/N, can I tell you something about guys?"

"Sure," Y/N sighed.

"We often look at the girl when she's not looking."

"What the hell is that supposed to mean?"

"It means," he laughed. "I've seen the way Dylan looks at you when you aren't looking. I've seen the way he is always willing to help you, always jumping at the chance to make you laugh. Your smile becomes his smile. He's addicted to you, Y/N. He always wants to be around you, to be with you. Dylan loves you, kiddo."

"Sure," Y/N scoffed. "He loves me as a friend. Nothing more."

"You don't know that," Y/B/N sighed.

"Yeah, well," she cleared her throat. "You don't know he does."

"Listen to me, kiddo. You will be a lot happier if you open up to him and tell him."

"Y/B/N, please," her voice broke.

"You have been in love with Dylan since you were little, Y/N. I remember the day you came home from school acting really weird. I asked you what was wrong, you freaked out and ran to your room. I followed you and you told me you thought you were in love with Dylan. It was the day that you were crossing the street and that car almost hit you. Dylan pulled you out of the street, basically saving your life—which I still owe him for. You told me about the way he held you close to his chest, how quickly and easily he was able to calm you down, how he didn't hesitate to protect you."

We were in seventh grade when that happened. She had just barely stepped onto the crosswalk when I saw the car speeding towards her. Without thinking it through, I stepped off the sidewalk and grabbed her. I pulled her out of the street, making both of us fall onto the grass.

I instantly pulled her into my chest, more to help reassure myself that she was okay than it was to calm her down. I still remember how badly she was shaking in my arms. Once I had gotten her to calm down, I walked her home with her still tucked into my chest.

"That's when you first realized you were in love with him," Y/B/N kept talking. "You told me that you had never felt safer than when he held you in his arms. Do you remember what I told you?"

"You told me that it was perfectly normal to fall in love with your best friend," Y/N said, her voice barely a whisper. "But just because I fell in love with him, doesn't mean he fell in love with me."

Who would've known that the same day I realized how much I was in love with her, was also the day she realized she was in love with me.

"What if he did? Y/N, what if Dylan loves you too? You won't know unless you tell him." He said, starting to sound desperate.

"Why do you want me to tell him so badly?" She asked, her voice breaking.

"Because," he sighed, clearly hesitating. "Because he is the only guy who has ever made you smile. You're happy when you're with him, Y/N. And he takes amazing care of you, the kind of care that a big brother approves of."

"What do you mean?" She asked slowly.

"I mean, Dylan is just about the only guy I would trust enough to take you away from me. He's the only one I'd let you spend the rest of your life with. Y/N, Dylan's the only guy I would give my blessing for you to marry. I know you're a strong independent woman and you can make your own decisions and all, but. . . I'm your overly protective big brother and I won't always be around to protect you. Dylan can. He will. I trust him to. I know that, if you let him in, he will take such amazing care of you. Just please, let him in."

"I can't," she stuttered.

"Y/N," her brother said gently.

"I don't want to talk about this anymore," Y/N said quickly. She must have sat back on her phone or moved because the message ended. I stared at my phone, unable to process what just happened.

Y/N's in love with me. The girl I always expected spending the rest of my life with loves me. But she wasn't going to tell me. She was too scared of losing me to tell me her true feelings. That leaves me with one choice; I have to tell her first.
