Flashback...

I walked down the street, clutching the handle of my rucksack to my shoulder. The sky was beginning to turn cloud over as I turned the corner at the end of the block.

No going back now.

I sighed. Looks like I'll be walking through the night.

I finally arrived at the small council flat I rented in south London. It was pretty grotty, but it served its purpose. It had always seemed like a good idea to have somewhere to hide out if necessary, but I never told Seb about this one. Maybe a part of me always knew the real things in my life I needed to hide from was him.

I climbed up the third flight of concrete stairs of the tenement block, avoiding touching the rusted railing. Used needles lurked in every corner, surrounded by broken glass and ever cans. I could hear the shouts of men and women alike from behind closed doors, and sound of windows breaking. The sweet sound of broken people.

I reached my own door and turned my key in the large iron lock. I flung open the door and quickly locked if behind me. I look around. The flat was almost bare. A small single bed was what the bedroom consisted of. A fridge stood against the far wall, containing no more than a scrap of food.

I sighed, closing the door. It was gonna be a long night.

I lay down on the bare single bed, closing the curtains of questionable colour. As I began to shut my eyes I heard the banging of fists against the door.

I grimaced and opened my eyes, clenching my fists.

You've got to be kidding me.

The banging continued

"Oi, you, get out here."

I sighed, swinging my legs over the edge of the bed.

"Look, you dumb whore, open this door or I'll break it down."

I marched over to the door, and making sure the safety chain was on, opened the door a crack.

Four men, barely boys, stood outside the door. Two of the them appeared to be smoking, and I could see them clutching an empty bottle of vodka.

Great.

The  man closest to the door gave me a foul grin.

"Hello, sweetheart."

I glared back at him.

"Come on out, darling, we just wanna talk."

"Not on your life." I shot back. "Now get outta here."

His face scrunched up.

"Feisty aren't we."

Just as I went to slam the door he stuck his foot in between.

I let my breath hiss out past my teeth, feeling for the familiar sensation of my 9mm semi-automatic Beretta pressing against my thigh. I resisted the urge to grab it and blow his brains out.

Keep a low profile, I reminded myself.

I plastered my most terrified expression on my face.

"Oh, okay, s-sorry" I stuttered, removing my hand form my weapon. "Please don't hurt me," I whimpered. "I'll do anything you want."

I slowly slid off the chain, making my hands shake. I let the door swing open and tentatively stepped out the door.

The man trapped me against the wall between his arms. His rough hand caressed my cheek.

"Now this is better," he whispered. I resisted the urge to throw up, and knock him out.

"Look here, lads," he called, smiling at his posse. "We've got a little kitten right here." They laughed, a dark smile crossing their features.

His hands moved to my hips and he gripped them firmly, his intention clear in his eyes. I felt my body stiffen.

"Time for a little fun," he whispered, his mouth hot against my ear. He started placing sloppy kisses down my neck, pulling my body against him. I couldn't help myself then. It was an innate reaction. Before I realised what I was doing my knee connected with his crotch and I shoved him hard in the chest. Before he could react I swung my fist catching him square in the jaw. Blood splattered against the wall.

"You little bitch." He sneered.

Then before I knew it the other two had me pinned against the wall. As I went to elbow them in the shoulder, the third one aimed a hit to my head. I felt my neck reel backwards, smashing into the brick wall. The first one already had a bruise forming. Before I had time to retreat, his foot came crushing into my stomach. I reeled forward in pain. Not just the pain the kick had caused but a much deeper pain. The last thing I saw was his fist heading straight to me.

I slowly opened my tired eyes. I could feel something cold and hard against my cheek. I could see the concrete of the hallway outside my flat. I was lying in the foetal position. I tried to straighten out my legs but felt a shooting pain through my abdomen. I clutched my stomach in agony.

I managed to drag myself back into my apartment. I didn't even need to check to know.

Whatever baby was inside me was gone.

Present day...

"Welcome."

A voice boomed through the room.

"Here in Kings we won't just take anyone. It's time for you to prove yourselves"

I was standing in a large, empty room in what appeared to be an abandoned warehouse, surrounded by thirty or so other men and women wearing leather trousers and black t-shirts. We'd been left waiting for over an hour, but I knew we did this to see who cracked, who couldn't handle the pressure. Now some gut, maybe 25, 26, was about to introduce us to the gruelling training regime we had in Kings. We were partnered up, supposedly accordingly to size, though I had ended up with a boy as wide as he was tall. In his defence, he looked uncomfortable about the arrangement, but I knew this would earn him no favours. In Kings it doesn't matter if you're male or female, small or big, young or old. The irony or equality.

I was able to take advantage of his nervousness by aiming a hard kick to his side, making him lose his balance, hitting the mat. He quickly got to his feet, a more determined look on his face. He aimed a punch at my face nut I ducked from his flow, and tipped him as he took a step backwards. I felt someone standing behind me. I whipped around to see the man who'd been speaking at the front.

"Name." He said, his expression emotionless.

I raised my eyebrows at him.

"What's your name." He said loudly.

I held his gaze.

"Kaia."

He continued to stare at me.

"Very impressive."

I waited until he turned and walked away before I left my smile reveal itself.

I should think so. I invented this training.
