Chapter twenty-seven:
"The Elders have put us in a very sticky situation," she said, her annoyance clear on her face. "The rest of the Packs know about the Vampires now."
"We can ask our allies for help," one of the Wolves in the council piped up.
"It's no use. They won't come forth and help us unless they get something out of it or if they also experience it and need our protection," Cyra shook her head.
"But with the law on our side, don't we have the upper hand?"
"Djomahn has gone to the Elders along with my father to discuss that matter right now," she informed them. Only a person born of magic or the Elders can communicate with the High Witches.
"What if for now, we just wait for the Vampires to attack other Packs?" David asked.
Cyra looked at David. "I highly doubt the Vampires would attack any other Packs."
"Why not?!"
Cyra could see the worry and curiosity in all the faces of her council people. "The Vampire Prince, Ludovic Adameșteanu, is not attacking us to kill time. He has a purpose. He is looking for something and that's in this Pack. I don't know for sure what exactly it is that he wants but in order to stop him, we have to figure it out."
"How do you know that, Alpha?"
She thought about her reply for a couple of seconds before carefully articulating her response. "When we were attacked yesterday, he was there. He opened up and told me about wanting something but before I could ask him anything more about it, he was gone along with the rest of them."
"What do you plan on doing now?" Leo asked.
"If there was a way for us to get into their realm or even if we just got to know how they're getting here, we could've stopped them. But for now, there's nothing else we can do but wait for the reply of the High Witches. And if those bastards come back again, we have to be prepared."
*
It was the night of the full moon and Cyra had been looking forward to this after her shitty last few days. The power she felt coursing through her veins was refreshing after days of feeling helpless. In the last couple of days, she had barely any time left for herself as she had couped herself up in her office with Djomahn and Leonold. They needed to come up with a viable strategy as soon as possible what with the reputation of her Pack being at stake.
"Djo, did you get any news from the Elders?"
"No. It will take at least a week. We need to be patient," he explained to her, without looking up from the book in his hand. "There must be something else," he mumbled to himself as he got off the couch and went to the room next to her office where he had set up room for himself.
"Why is taking so long?" Leo asked his sister.
"The Elders have sent a Wolf to Whosing Town. It will take him to get there, apparently, and then after the Witches discuss the matters, which again will take long, he has to come back," she repeated what Djo had told her the previous day.
"Why not just send a message themselves instead of sending an actual, physical messenger?"
"Those Witches consider it disrespectful," she rolled her eyes. "Did you make the schedule yet?" She asked. The patrolling plan they had was clearly insufficient and they needed to immediately make it more vigorous.
"Almost done," he replied, getting back to his work.
Cyra nodded her head, getting back to the books in her hand, trying to figure out what exactly was there in the Pack--in her--that the Vampire Prince was so hellbent over it.
