Chapter five

Cyra tapped her fingers on the desk as she chewed on her bottom lip, waiting for the line to connect.

"Hello?" Cyra said as soon as Liam picked up her call.

"Alpha Cyra?" Liam asked, sounding surprised; in his defence, she had never called him first.

"Yeah, hey," she said, trailing off not knowing what exactly to say. What could she tell him? Hey, remember how I said that runaway was my Mate? Well, yeah, he's rejecting me. So how about we get hitched?

"Is something wrong?" He asked, growing curious about their phone call.

"Well, not really. I was just calling to confirm the terms of the contract," she said, pleased by her quick-thinking.

"We're still going with that?" He asked, sort of baffled. "Didn't you find your Mate?"

"It is a moot fact. You haven't found your Mate yet and the Elders of my Pack think it would be wise if we gave this ten months, as we had agreed before. If we find our Mates or under any other legitimate circumstance we can back out," she slowly said, making up the term as she spoke.

"So you are saying that we are each other's backups?" He asked making her cringe at the word.

"Not back up, intrinsically," she said. "As an Alpha yourself, you know that it is required of us to have someone as our Mates. If worst comes to worst, we must know we have another resort."

Liam went quiet after that. "This doesn't seem very beneficial to me, seeing that you have already found your Mate," he said.

"Liam, you haven't found yours, though. I was making sure we both have our options open. Besides, my mother thinks that with both of us being Alphas, it could be mutually benefitting to both of us, in terms of power and personal strength."

"Cyra, I must say, I wasn't even expecting a call from you at all, never mind the contract," Liam said after a couple of seconds of silence.

"I'm sorry, I must admit, I dropped this bombshell on you out of the blue," she chuckled. "But why don't you think about it and you can call me about it later."

"Of course," he said. "If that is all...?"

"For now, yes. I have nothing else to say. I'll be waiting to hear back from you. Have a nice day, Alpha Liam."

"You too, Alpha Cyra," he said, hanging up.

There was a knock on her door, making her sit up straight in her chair as she opened her eyes. "Come in."

"Alpha, here are the files that came in from the hotel," Elena said, dropping the files on her table.

Seeing that it was already getting late, she thought of completing the work the next day. Going down, she looked at her parents sitting in the backyard.

"Hey, dad. Mom," she greeted taking a seat next to them.

"Hey there," Pierre smiled.

"Did you call Alpha Liam?" Her mother asked eagerly.

Cyra rolled her eyes. "Yes, mom."

"Why are you calling Alpha Liam?" Her father asked.

"To apologise for how I acted when he was here and mom thought it would still be wise if we went ahead with the contract," she told her father, wanting to get his approval as well.

"You still want to get mated to Alpha Liam?" Her father asked confused.

"Not exactly. I told Liam that it would be wise if we just kept each other as options, you know. If things go downhill in these ten months, we would just stick with the original plan," she explained.
