Make a wish

I only just got in my room when my mom came in. “Claire, you okay?” she asked but to be fair it was a stupid question. “You mean the constant neglect of my dad and abuse from my brother, no I’m not okay.” I say-scream at her when I know I shouldn’t. Mom sits next to me on my bed “I know it may be hard but at least I can give you your surprise now.” She says and lifts up a candle shaped like 16 it looked pretty old but looking more closely I could see it was never used. “I know it seems silly but every girl in the family when she turns 16 she gets a wish and that wish comes true permantly, so be careful what you wish for.” She tells me and handing me the candle. “What did you wish for?” I ask. “I wished that I’d have a beautiful girl who would make me proud and my wish did come true.” Mom says while running a hand through my hair. “Thanks Mom.” I say giving her a hug.

Mom left a minute later and I was thinking of my wish but it had to be a good wish for it would last forever.

I look at my desk and see the family photo but I was out of frame because David dropped my phone on the floor and the picture was taken when I went to pick it up and Dad didn’t even bother to have another picture taken. The picture showed me what I was to my family my dad enforced the law, my mom saved people’s lives and David was a popular athlete at school and I was nothing.

Finally I know what I’m going to wish for, I grab the candle and a match and I light the candle and I say “I wish that I could have something to make me important in my family, something that makes me special.” Then I blow out the candle, put the candle on the table and I get into bed.
