Lindsey wasn't going to let her go until he got an explanation of Stevie's sudden change of plans. They were so excited, they talked and talked about it for weeks, they had found themselves a place to live and she had even found a job at a diner, the last thing to do was to pack their bags and make the actual move.
"Stevie, I'm waiting. You know me well enough to understand I will not leave until you tell me your reasons for deciding otherwise."
"Just take my word, Linds, please..."
"Listen to yourself! Take your word for it? Stevie, we've planned this for so long and what about hours we spent talking just how excited we were that we're finally doing something about our music?" He took her hands in his and pleaded for her to say something. "Don't you love me? Don't you want to be with me? Don't you want to start our life together?"
"We've done that already..."
Her voice was so quiet, he wasn't sure if he heard correctly. "What was that?"
"I said, we have already started a life together."
"Steves, I don't get it." He was lost at that point.
"I can tell..."
"What is it? What do you mean by what you just said?"
"I'm pregnant, Lindsey."
He loosend his grip on her hands and let them fall to her sides. "You can't be!"
"But I am and I didn't get pregnant on my own."
"Stevie, no..." He shook his head. "This is not how it's supposed to go. You weren't meant to carry a baby, you were meant to join me and we were going to..."
"Well, it happened!" She cut him off.
"So, you will have taken care of it."
"Excuse me?!"
"Neither of us is even eighteen yet, we're too young to be parents, you have to be thinking the same, Stevie, I know you are. And if we were, a kid would only stand in our way of what we trully want."
"Who are you?" Was the only question she had to ask him, her tears rolling down her cheeks freely.
"Steves..." He tried to reach for her, but she stepped back.
"No! Don't even think about lying your finger on me!"
"Let's not make a scene and talk about this instead."
"I think you've made yourself perfectly clear, Lindsey."
"Look, I love you, whether you believe me or not, you're my everything, Stevie, and one day I would want nothing more than to marry you and have children with you, but certainly not now. I'm only seventeen years old, I want to get out there, I want people to hear what I have to say, I want them to talk about what a great guitar player I am, how good my songs are. That's what I want for now, not to look after a baby..."
"Then this is where we say goodbye to each other." She surprised herself by how well she was managing to stand by her choice and not give in after taking a look into his eyes she loved so dearly.
"Don't say this, Stevie, I can't do this without you! I'm nothing without you."
"If you are meant to become a well known and respected musician, Lindsey, you will and it doesn't matter when. If you trully love me as much as you say you do... You would stay with me."
"But it's all planned..."
"And we can plan everything again later! We can have our baby, we can leave then."
He shook his head, unable to make eye contact with her. "I don't think I can do that."
"Then there's nothing else left for me to say to you."
"How long have you known?"
"About two weeks." She didn't hesitate to answer.
"Why did you let me get this happy then? Why did you let me go on and on about the things we would do there?"
"Because I didn't know how to tell you and... I guess, I thought you would be happy when I did and you'd wait with me."
"Is this your absolute final decision?"
"It is, Lindsey." She exhaled deeply. "I'm not going to terminate the pregnancy. I've known about our baby for a couple of weeks and I love it so much already, I couldn't do something as horrible, it's... It's cold blooded murder in my opinion. I can't be sure this will ever happen to me or us again. I will not take the risk, Lindsey, I won't do it."
"There is no us." It was the only thing he picked up.
His words hurt her like nothing before had. "What are you saying?" She could barely speak as her voice cracked with each word. "Are you breaking up with me?"
"Are you moving to Los Angeles with me?" She looked at him for a long moment, it took her a lot of will to tear her eyes away from him and she shook her head. "Then I'm breaking up with you."
