"Why are you wearing sunglasses inside?" King asked.
"Because I can," I replied.
"But why?"
Out of irritation, I snapped, "Shut up. It's none of your business."
King let the conversation dropped. He looked down at the table, then up at me again. "Remy-"
"Zip it! I'm not in the mood to talk right now."
"I'm not in the mood to talk right now," King mocked.
I sighed, crossing my arms. I didn't have the energy to deal with King's antics. "Look," I yawned, "I just need a ten-minute nap and then I'll be ready to talk."
"A nap? Did you get any sleep last night? Are you going to have time to eat?"
"I'll still have like, ten minutes to eat. Lunch just started. I didn't really sleep well last night..." But I haven't been getting much at all lately.
I crossed my arms over the table and rested my head on them. "Make sure to wake me up in ten," I demanded.
"Sure thing."
Within seconds, I was asleep. I continued like that until I could hear King's voice saying, "Remy, we're going to be late! Get up."
I slowly opened my eyes to a strange dark world. Not again, I can't deal with this right now. Oh wait, my sunglasses, I thought.
"Remy-"
"Okay! Okay! I'm up!" I looked over at King, who had a worried expression. "What?"
"It took a long time to wake you up, and you're really pale." King studied me a bit before continuing, "We gotta go."
I looked around, the cafeteria was almost empty. I sighed, slipping on my bag. I stood, and King and I were off to class.
King's class was at the front of the school, while mine was in the back. We each said goodbye as we turned two different directions.
Once I got to class, I was almost tardy. I sat in my usual seat in the back.
The entire class period, instead of listening, I slept. The sunglasses made it much easier to sleep in class than normal.
The next class, the same thing.
And the next.
Finally, it was time to go home. I snatched up my bag and left the classroom at top speed. I ran into Bernice and King on my way out.
"Hey, Remy!" Bernice greeted. "You wanna come to my place and hang-"
"No. Not today. I'll hang with you guys tomorrow. Bye." I walked past them and out the door without a second glance.
Then, I began the short drive home, trying my best to stay awake.
At home, I sat on the couch, staring into the distance. Now that I was here, I couldn't fall asleep. There's no telling when they'd come back, now that I was home.
I had to keep them at bay. I just had to, but it wasn't something that was in my control, and I was suffering because of it. If only I was strong enough to conquer my fears.
